4 THE EVENING STAR: THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY. k EVENING STAR has the fullest Local Cirealation of any Newspaper in the World, and as an Advertising Mediam is worth more than all (he other papers published im Washington. The principle of denomfnational federation is interesting, as it is sought to be applied by varions churches for various purposes. Per- haps the most extensive application of the principle in our day is the proposed union of the reformed churches in the United States. It seems to be the object of the Dutch and German reformed bodies of Presbyterians to frame a sort of fedoral synod, reserving to each of the individual denominations its individa- ality as well as every power, jurisdiction and right which is not by the constitution expressly delegated to the body thus constituted. Each denomination is to send to the federal synod sixteen ministers and sixteen elders, chosen under the direction of their respective general synods im such manner as these synods shall de- termine. Each representation is to be divided into four classes, serving so many years each. ‘The federal principle, handed down from the fatherland of the Germanic peoples and the most remote times to which tribal, national or social tradition points, is that sought to be applied to church affairs as distinguished from those of the state. If the present movement shall be a success it will without doubt have great weight in determining the gravitation of other sets of denominations having points of affinity. It may even exercise an influence upon the formation of that couneil to which so many celigions minds of all Christian faiths have been directed more and more. —___ ++ — “The whole statement 15 an exaggeration, and any one knowing me would have recog: | nized in the language itself the imposmbility | that I ever used it.” So says Gen. Grosvenor conecrning his im- migration interview, eating his words a second time, to conciliate a hostile critic and save his official carcass. It is in evidence that when this interview was first printed Gen. Grosvenor saw no impossibility in the use of the language attributed to him, but proudly claimed it, re- plied to the warnings of his newspaper friends that it was time strong words were said on the subject, and posed as the man with the courage necessary to meet the occasion. As one of the newspaper men who saw him picturesquely puts it: “He clapped his wings over the inter- view.” At the first sign of danger, however, he promptly folded his wings and came down from his perch. After all his braggadocio as the brave, outspoken statesman, who dared to meet the displeasure of the foreign element in his beloved country’s behalf, anybody im the country by looking bard at him can now make him eat the leck. To increase the abjectness of the collapse Gen. Grosvenor, instead of re- tracting words of which he now pecceives the impolicy, cravenly repudiates the interview which be at first indorsed, and attempts to hold the reporter asa shield between him and his assailants. It isa pitiful case. oe President Hurt of the Washington and Georgetown street railway is sound in his sug- gustion that the city should have a police reg- ulation making it an offense to steal rides on street cars, and the regulation should also be extended to steam cars as long as the latter are permitted to occupy the surface of streets, ‘even at crossings. ‘The practice is carried on by boys whenever the opportunity is afforded, and the suggestion has no reference to news- boys, but to the idle, who place themselves in danger as a form of recreation. A live boy in the Police Court is worth great desl more than a dead one in the coroner's court. pase — Along time ago Mr. Seward sarcastically said of Washington city: “All the people there seem impressed with the idea that they have arrived at the summit of human glory in living in Washington, no matter what their oceupation. Whatever of sarcasm there might be in such a speech concerning the Washington of Sew- ard’s time there is none now, and the capital ean today boldly announce the sentiment which was then slightingly ascribed to it. — The Knights of Reciprocity at their meeting in Kansas agreed to arrange for a consolidation with the Knights and Ladies of America, with- out, however, guaranteeing the use of the bal- lot box to the Ladies. Reciprocity prevails in other respects. eS a a It might be advisable to suggest to Lawyer Ogden of San Antonio that when he is ready to locate the site of his monument, a thousand feet high, to federal and confederate valor, he should not select ground anywhere in the neigh- borbvod of Stableside-on-the-Hadson. ———_o+2s____ The most serious loss jn the Charleston- Itata matter is that of the prize money to the officers and men of the Charleston. Asa mat- ter of poetic justice under the circumstances of the capture the prize money ought to go to the officers and crew of the Itata. +2 Does the United States have to recognize any clvims of the Chilian insurgents in the Itata affair? Have they any rights in the matter? Is the recoguition of their claims to any extent a recognition of their government? The Itata belonged to no recognized power and her cap- tain is virtually the only authority to settie with. ~ + Now that Newfoundland agrees to police her- self on the lobster banks Great Britain should improve each shining diplomatic hour to fix hings with France so that there will be-no trouble. far ——————— The rain has boomed the crops in Virginia and has undermined by so much the hopes of the Farmers’ Alliance leaders. Farmers with fine « yin sight are not anxious to go polities. Ser ot ae te has decided that eight hou: not coustitutute a full day's work. Evidently that senate is not expecting much .from the labor vote. - — ‘The Union Theological Seminary directors mast now be tried for heresy or something. They announce that Dr. Briggs will be contin- wed im hisold place and that the general as has nothing to do with the ense. — Now that we have the Itata what are we going todo with her? Why net bay her and convert her into a privateersman for future use and call her the “Uncatchable "? — a Philadelphia is active in locking the stable door after the horse is stolen. But therein she shows up more ereditably then some other Cities similarly aftticted, which have neither loeked the door nor pursed the thief. — Hine the Chinese goverment anything to sy against our Police Court in the late opium and + —___ Are we to call an extra session of Congress to usrantee Great Britain trom loss in the settle- ment of the Bering tea mazter? ————— Consul Corte bas arrived in Rome and New Orleans begins to shiver. ——<+2—_—_. ‘The Man-afraid-of-the-Third-Party does not appear to be entizely alxent from the repubii- ean ranks.
