THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C. THURSDAY, APRIL 23. 1891. THE ACCIDENT TO THE GALENA. A Court-Martial Ordered to Try Lieutenant Commander Bleknell. Secretary Tracy has ordered a conrt-martial to asembie at the New York navy yard April 2% to try Lient. Commander Bicknell on a charge of “negligence in mnflering two vessels of the mavy to be stranded near Gay Head light, Martha's Vineyard Inland, Mase, on the Ist ultimo.” ‘The detail for the board is: Capt. RF. Bradford, Capt. A. F. Cooke, Com- mauder Merrill Miller, Commander E. T. Wood- ward, Commander P. H. Cooper, Commander A. S. Crowninshield, Commander C. J. Barclay, Lient. Commander E. 8. Houston, Lieut. Com- mander Louis Kingsley and Lieut. S.C. Lemly, Judge advocate. The Galena was docked at Portsmouth, N.H., yesterday to enable the board of survey to as- certain the extent of her injuries. This step was taken on the basis of the views of the court of inquiry which examined the facts connected with the stranding of the United States steamers Galena an] Nina last month, which has reported to the Navy De- partment that Lieut. Commander Bicknell, who was in command of the vessels, was respon- le for the disaster. ——_e+ A SUIT OVER THE NORMANDIE. BIll Against Proprietor Woodbury—Mr. H. ‘M. Cake Asks for a Keceiver. Horace M.Cake has,by Worthington & Heald, filed a bill in equity against E. F. Woodbury etal. for the foreclosure of chattel mortgage, the appointment of a receiver, for an account and an injunction to prevent the defendant, Woodbury, from carrying on business at the Hotel La Normandie. The bill sets forth the erection of the hotel by Mr. Washington McLean in 1988; that com- plainant leased the building for ten years from January 1, 1859, at $15,000 for the first year and 16,000 for the remainder of the term; that he subsequently took Woodbury into busi- ness with him and he sold his interest and as- signed the lease to Woodbury, taking as the consideration certain note: He charges that Woodbury has failed to meet one of the notes and now alleges that false representations were made to him as to the terms of the lease and has since evaded a meet- fug with him. He denies that there were any falec representations mado by him snd prays as above. —___ ALEXANDRIA, BOYS CHANGED WITH BURGLARY. ‘The police hold two lads, Richard B. Smith, fr., and his little brother, residing with their parents on Columbus street near Cameron, on the charge of burglary at the gun store of George Ayres, on King near Royal street, last night. The elder of the lads is not more than fourteen years old and the younger about eleven years of age. Officers Taylor and Bettis discovered the burglary and procecded to ex- amine the premises, and found the boys in the outhouse. “A revolver and other articles were found on them. The family of the lads bas re- moved to this city from Washington within a few months past. e Ata later hour the two lads had a hearing before the mayor. It appeared that the father, acivil engineer, is at Fortress Monroe in con: nection with electrical work. | The family reside in one of the handsome new houses just built near Christ Chareb. The lads bid their mother and sisters food night last night and went up to. bed. fter the family was asleep they stole quietly oat of the house and made their way down King street, passing two policemen on the route. ‘Then, going into the alley back of Maj. Duffey’s Jewelry store, they got in where some planks ‘were off a fence and by mounting an outhouse and clambering over a wail in the bright moonlight they reached the rear window of Mr. George Ayres’ gun and repair shop. Here they ent outalarge pane of glass, but, being impeded by a wire, broke the glass. Then en- tering ther broke open the money drawer and secured $1.30. They took two $60 guns out of the front window and put them with a number of his tools and some second-hand watches on top of the money drawer preparatory to carrying them away, but in opening the money drawer the bell bad rung and attracted the attention of Policemen Bettis and Taylor, who were on the opposite side of the street. "The policemen came across the street, heard the lads scamper, and going im found them in an outhouse as ‘mentioned above. They were held for a further hearing tomorror ACQUITTED OF MURDER. The corporation court, Judge Norton, spent Yesterday in the trial of Frank Scarce for the murder of John Wright. The defense was made by Mr. J. H. Greene, counsel of the ac- cused, and a considerable number of witnesses examined. The testimony disclosed the facts reported at the time, and the jury about 7 clock found a verdict of “not guiliy,” which j pplanse, and be was accompanied by them to his home. NOTES.
