2 AN INVESTIGATION IN PROGRESS. Formal Charges Against Some of the Fore- men Presented to the Public Printer. | If Columbia Typographical Union had not elected officers recently Public Printer Palmer | would not now be engaged in investigating | some rather serious charges which were filed with bim last week. Statements are current in the government printing office that a number of the mon who wore discharged from that cs tablishment earned their permits to quit work because they voted for candidates who were not regarded with affection by some of the nesist- | ant foremen. The matter was formally placed in the public printer's hands by a delegation of ‘the sufferers, and interesting developments are looked for. Attorney General Miller, Secretary Halford, Marshal Kansdeil and First Controller Matthews are said to be moving in the matter, Decause a number of their friends are among those who allege discrimination on account of election prejudices. — —— THE FAIRS. ‘The festival of the Catholic indies at the So- ality Lyceum Hall closed ou Saturday night. It bas been quite successful. The fair of Champion Castle of the Knights of the Golden Bagie at Armory Hall had also a week of nota- Die success and many visitors from Washing- toa. | TER COUNTY corat. Anelegant dinner was given on the 28th | Bitine at the Hamilton Club, Brooklyn, to| Lieut. John M. Hawley of the navy. one of the | heroes of Samoa. The dinner was a handsome and unique affair, and the mena included sev- | eral sagzestive and appropriate dishes, among | which appeared “grape fruit, Samoan Zashion,” “Sorbet Nipsic.” the sorbet being served to each gnest, surmounted by a minintare rey sentation of the Nipsic in silver. which was ried away asa souvenir of the festive occasion. ‘The mena card was in the form of a book, the caves of which were fastened together with loops of dainty blue ribbon. ‘The cover was of celluloid, on which appeared an artistic sketch | in water colors representing the Nipsic riding at anchor with « boat load of sailors in the fore- ground rendy to pull off to her. Under this ‘waa the inscription in gult letters, “To Lieut. | John M.
