THE ROAKD OF TRADE. It WiN Banquet the Inventors at the Cen- tennial Celebration. The inventors who will be in attendance on the patent centennial may be, and probably are, extremely ingenious men, but they would have to toil mightily before they could plan anything more satisfactory than the banquet which will be given them by the board of trade. ‘The menu has not been printed yet, but some | of the epicures and gastronomes and connois- veurs on the executive committee have fairly well-developed ideas as to what it will look like when they have bad two or three executive sessions Prevident Myron M. Parker called the board | of trade to order last night in Willard Hall, and although he evidextly wished « larger propor- tion of the membership ha: ance he appeared to be satisfie oughly representative nature of the assemblaj Brietly and clearly did the president recite the action of the board of directors as to the pro- posed feast and with a good deal of emphasis €id he advocate the idea in all its fullness. He favored the proposition because he believed it to be a matter of. more than ordinary im- portance. ‘THE BANQUET WILL BETTER THINGS. Secretary Alex. D. Anderson also laid stress upon the necessity which existed for sucha hoepitable good-will offering as that suggested by the executive committee. The banquet would be a substitute for the once-proposed celebration of the District centennial. and it could also take the place of the annual dinner of the board of trade. He pointed ont some of the local advantages which would follow in the train of this patent system centennial. Ameri- can inventors would organize and establish headquarters here, and there would undoubt- edly be « permanent exhibit of working models in a spectally constructed building. W. C. Dodge was of opinion that the board of trade ought to dosomething. ‘The oceasion which called for this celebration was a great one. He regretted that the matter had not been pressed some time ago, but was satisfied the banquet proposition could be carried toa sucessful conclusion. President Parker gave the reasons which had prevented earlier action, and Mr. Dodge said they were perfectly satisfactory. Maj. H. A. Hall moved that the proposition of the executive committee be approved by the board and that the preliminary details be at- D.C. —_ ae THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, Oe He 25, 1891 WANTED—HELP. MESSRS. WATKINS AND DU BOIS SPEAK. At the invitation of President Parker and on Debalf of the inventors Mr. J. E. Watkins and Mr. Jas. T. Du Bois addressed the board. Mr. Watkins spoke of the scheme in a general way \d was certain that the banquet would be the most pleasing feature of the social entertain- ment of the distinguished visitors. Mr. Du Lois related some of the difficulties which had been encountered and overcome in the planning of this celebration. He gave the names of many of the celebrities who would be bere and he concurred with Mr. Watkins as to the value of the banquet. Mr. Simon Wolf was of the opinion, and he said so, that the initiative in the matter under discussion should have been taken by the Dis- trict Commissioners. They, however, had de- clined to move, 40 it was proper that the board of trade do something. He hoped and believed it would be well done. COMMITTEES APPOINTED.
