DEATH OF FATHER KEVILL. ‘The Vice President of Gonanga College Dies of Poeumenia. Rev. Father W. J. Kevill, 8. J., of Gonzaga College died at 3:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the St. Aloysins parsonage, where he had been confined to his room for about s week. When first taken sick Father Kevill appeared to have only a slight cold, but yesterday morn- ing it was evident that he was suffering from a wevere attack of pneumonia and congestion of the lungs. Drs. Kleinschmidt and Magruder held s con- sultation, but his condition was beyond medi- cal skill, and the patient died at the hour etateri. Vather Kevill wasa native of Norfolk, Va, where he was born in-1853. Before leaving BEY WORKERS FOR SOLLIWERY that city be attended St Mary's school. e\we fat fe ee afterward attended the Louvne. Belgium, Oat: pant where be wasa pupil of Mouse Who is now at the Catholic Univ pony ae 1881 Father Kevill entered the Society of ware inter he etadiod at Wood- stock, and in tres he was 0 teacher in Gonzaza Three years ago he was ordained at We by Cardimai Gibbons, aud from that time until the latter part of last year he Wass professor in St. John's College, Fordam, N.Y. ‘In September of last year he came to this city as vice president and prefect of studies in Goi College, which position be held at the time of his death. His funeral will take place from St. Aloysius Church tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. The interment will be in the cemetery of George- town College. aie LIEUT. BOTELER’S CASE. ‘The Commissioners Looking Over the Case-- Some Doubtful Points. The Commissioners have not yet approved the finding of “not guilty” in the case of Lieut. Boteler of the police force, who was recently | tried by the police trial board on the charge of intoxication. Whether the charges will be dismissed as recommended is a matter of con- jecture. Recently the Commissioners have overruled the finding» of the police board in several cases. The case was discussed by the Commissioners today. It in understood that the cause of delay is due to the testimony of one of the witnemes, who testified unwillingly, and was evidently concealing something, and one of the witnesses for the defense, who, it is charged, was intoxicated at the time himself. Commissioner Douglass was deeply engrossed fm the papers this morning. When a Stax reporter interrupted him and asked what dis- position he pro making of the case he replied with a twinkle in his eye that he only had one vote out of three, and was consequent! nly but 335¢ per cent of the pow rs that be, ani his decision was not worth much. These figures are erroneous and apt to mislead many who will take them for granted in the selection of the memorial. Yes, 21,500 will pay a course of three years’ tuition and board sud lodging in some univer- sity for one pupil, viz.: $00 tuition and #25 monthl: thy (ea ws for board and lodging; in one year, 3600; in 4 course of three years, 1,800. And then? Where is the memorial? At these rates only one girl would beuefit by it. What is to be provided is not #1,800, but the capital producing $1,800 ata saie rate of interest; at 5 per cent it would require £36,000 for o1 girl's training each year. For training one every three years—ihat is, exhausting the course for one student before selecting & new candidate—it would require three times less, or 912,000. A memorial is not a memorial unless it is perpetual. It can only be made so by a capital safely invested. ‘These figures are low and liable to be increased ‘im the practice rather than decreased. ey who endow scholarships by will general Gueath from $25,000 to #50,000, because they wish to leave a perpetual, unincumbered me- morial of their name. The Spinner Association Must figure on the same Dass or it will bea miserable failure. Sentiment is one thing, and hard facts another. A’ statue, good of its kind, design to be competed for by American ar- tists, can be bad for $15,000 that is paid for the ity ends and the oe can retire with a sigh of relief: its duty is done completely. In any other line, unless it ‘undertakse to ace the it is bound to meet with trouble and leave for others to struggle with « meworial of its un- business-like preceedings. Figures tell, study them. No mention is made here of home or to be built the sum would far exceed hove, given above; and even then nothing ing an income sufficient for the salaries of a matron, cook and janitor; add six inmates at for ai the lowest, 6200 x month, £9,000 is 972,000 capital, besides the bui the hundreds of thousands. Whatever is done must be done thoroughly; no one is behind the into one: it cannot afford to leavi 5] y embarrassment beiind it. ‘To Talk om University Extension. WILL GET THEIK SALARIES, It appears, after all, that the national world’s fair commission will be enabled to meet in Chicago im April. In answer to a telegram sent to Gen. Nettleton, acting secretary of the treasury, by the board of control asking if the ‘Treasury Department would approve and pay salaries, as now fixed, of the direeter general, vice chairman and secreta-y until June 30 out of $33,000 balance for the fiscal year, also if the expenses of the uational commission meeting im April would be paid, the following answer was received: “Will approve the salaries of director gen- eral, vice chairman and secretary, also of such other officers and clerks as may be selected for Fetention by the board and approved by this Seccaned anemones ye Whatever remains after payment of said sala- ‘Fles and necr mary contingent expenses may be used for payment of expenses of transportation and per diem in lion of eubalstonse fot meeting of the com:aision in April, bat no deficiency must be created.” ‘This settles the salaries of Director General Dickisaon, about which s great deal of teva which a ‘omand surmising bas a bun ge generated. ine wil ben saniing of the members of the Batchelors Lawn Tennis Club at the rooms rear of 1744 Nat. u.w., MERIDIAN STABLES. : ‘ash business, ‘they have 10 rou ae By W.: : : OR RENT—FURNISHED ROOMS AND noaxp. | FOR BERT }17 07H ST.
