WASHINGTON: PRipar. CROSBY 8. NOYES THE EVENING STAR has the fullest Local Circulation of any Newspaper in the Workl. and as an Advertsing Medium ix worth mere than all the ether papers pablisked fir - Washington. Pr cern a OR. Senn Be-Corrctponstents are formed that anomy mous commonitions sent to TRE STAR are not peat. I mavtter is no! worsh the signature of the writer it is not wort writing, mueh leas printing povtessAinhashaeotivambarhutbrme sons been scene tk The generai election in Canada resulted, as Was expected, in a tory or government vietory, Sir John Macdonald, the premier, baving se- cured in Kingston x personal majority. But the liberals made extensive gains elxewiere aud the tory majority in parlininent of fifty was re- duced to perhaps jess than twenty. The strong in New Brunswick, Scotia, Manitoba, the —_north- west and British Columbia; the libernis im Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Isiand. The liberal organ. the Toronto (/ole, appears to think that Sir John cannot work with the small majority obtained, but that opinion may be on the principle of the wish as father of the thought. Certainly he has not won much of a victory, since his lomes are large and he was barely able to pul! through. Still, if he can keep his men onZtheir benches, fifteen or seventeen may do as Well as a larger majority, and it accords with parliamentscy experience that it is easier on occasions to | command ful id sabservieney to! government mensuree, with meagre than with | attendance a great) ma The result is chiefly interesting to the people of the United States | because of the reciprocity agitation. Sir Jobu Macdonald's government advocated a policy of Canadian iseintion from the industrial and economical system of the continent and notably from the United States. It made use of exaggerated professions of loyalty to the reyal family and of devotion to the mother couatry, and its principal stuck in trade seemed to be furious assaults upon the lead- ing liberals 98 traitors and conspira- tors. But the trend of public opinion was so unmistakably in favor of friendiy com- mercial reiations with this republic that Sir John and his party were forced to appear to yield to it and got ready for sending to ths capital a delegation to negotiate for an exten- sion of commerce between Canada and the United States. The liberals favored in the campaign absolute and unrestricted reciprocity between the two countries, the effect of which would be close commercial iutimacy with the United States. It was assumed by the tories that such relations would necesserily pave the way for annexation. This is not clear, however. Beyond all doubt it would have made probable a political alliance in the near future, whenever Canada should become an independent nation. There isno party here in favor of annexation. It remains to be seen just what use Sir John Macdonald will make of his reduced majority. This republic desires real reciprocity with all American peoples, but it does not propose to puli any chestnuts out of the fire for the Canatian tories. ss Bishop Hurst has wrongh* unceasingly and with demonstrated succe + for the great Metho- dist University to be located at the nationa! capital. This enterprise is one that should command the support of all Methodists through- out the land. Not only so. It is worthy the aid of ail that class of citizens who are inter- ested in the cause of advanced education. It should receive support on other grounds. Such institutions promote the best interests, mate- rial, moral and political, of the entire republic. With the broadening of culture comes a wider and more intelligent patriotimm. The city of Washington offers advantages that are pos- sessed by no other city on this con- tinent—no other city, in fact, the hemisphere—and the thoice = of this capital was eminently wise and obvi- ously the best thing its promoters could have decided upon. The capital of the United States is the political center of the republic if | not of all the Americas, and the day is not dis- | tant when the forces of American civilization from its most northern to its utmost southern confines will find here their appropriate point of concentration and radiation. The Metho-| dist will be one of a number of great national universities which, availing themselves of the great government libraries, maseums.law courts, &c., will gather here to make Washington the educational center of the country. —— In the retirement of Mr. Spooner from the Senate of the United States that body loscs one of its brightest, brainiest and youngest men, the Senate District committee loses a valuable, efficient and thoroughly equipped member, the District of Columbia loses one of the bes: ani strongest friends it ever had in Congress, and the banquet tendered him last night by his confreres was a compliment most wortiily be- stowed. Wut Your Sexe Dress Fir: It cannot ft faultlessly if an ill-fitting corset is worn. + Do your corsets fit perfectl You think they do. Do you know that many ladies wear corsets not. adapted to their figures and are not aware of the fact? Why is itt Because a selection is made from an imperfect vari- ety, with the resuit, more often than not, that the figure is made to fit the corset rather than the corset fit the figure, Do you know that the Palais Royal hasa greater variety of corsets to select from than any other two es- tablishments in town? There are six reasons why the Palais Royal has be- come to be known as headquarters for Corsets: First, by keeping in stock no less than 1% different styles; second, by having in charge of the department a lady with more experience than the majority of those who endeavor or pretend to make Corsets to order; third, by the launder and repair of {ts Corsets free of charge; fourth, by quoting the lowest prices; ith, by the absence of all unreliable makes. ‘Sixth—And of vital importance to yor ALL CORSETS FITTED.
