“THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1891. Ls - The brusque and fussy im- pulse of these days of false impression would ‘rate down all as worthless because one is unworthy. As if there were no motes in sunbeams ! Or comets among stais! Or Cataracts in peaceful rivers ! Because one remedy pro- fesses to do what it never was adapted to do, are all remedies worthless? Because one doctor lets his patient die, are all humbugs? It requires a fine eye and a finer brain to discriminate —to draw the differential line. “They say” that Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery and Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescrip- tion have cured thousands. « They say” for a weak sys- tem there’s nothing better than the “ Discovery,” and that the « Favorite Prescription ” is the hope of debilitated, feeble women who need a restora- tive tonic and bracing nervine. And here’s the proof —— Try one or both. If don’t help you, tell the World's Dispensary Medical Associa- tion so, and you get your money back again. The Problem Before the Democrate—The Speakership and the Committees. The ta made by the new members elected to the next Bouse and by others who come to Washington from those sections of the country where there is the most political die- turbances—disturbanee of political creed s—in- dicate the growth of the opposition to high tariff, as represented by the McKinley bill, has got beyond the expectation of the most san- gine tariff reformer ond that every other lasue will have to give way before that of reduction of taxation. There are now a number of the Farmers’ Alliance men in Washington who have | come in quietly to get « peep at Congress and see what the body is like that they are to be members of when it next convenes. They all make the same report as to the state of the ublic sentiment in their respective localities. Bne cannot listen to them without becoming convinced that the McKinley bill has done much to destroy the protective «ystem. The dangers which the te protectioniste naw, which caused them to oppowe the McKinley bill, lest the le, being too heavily burdened, would revolt and overthrow the whole of pro- tection, appears to be very near at hand, and FOREIGN TOPICS OF INTEREST. Chief Secretary Balfour Says That the Health of Dillon and O’Brien te —— Questions having been asked in house of commons in regard to the health of Messrs. O'Brien aad Dillén, the two members of parlia- ment who are sentences in the Galway jail, and whose ie such , that it was deemed expedient to’ place them in the infirm- ary conneeted with the'jail, Mr. Balfour, chief secretary for Ireland, stated iu the house yester- day that he had recetved a detailed medical re- port regarding the condition of the prisoners, and that according to this report their health was becoming satisfactory. ‘THE MISW NATIONAL LEAGUE. At the National League meeting in Dublin yesterday Mr. Harrington announced that within the past fortnight 44,311 had been re- ceived—chiefly from America—as » result of meetings connected with the recent Irish mis- tions. J, Redmond, in a speech, said that if he chose to reveal a private conversation he had with Messrs. Dillon and O'Brien before they were put in jail it would overwhelm their oppo- nents with contempt and prove that the latter alone were guilty of preventing reunion. Not content with wrecking the party, their ments had not hesitated to attribute to Mr. Brien « malversation of funds. Did the McCart ites, he asked, suppose that men like Flynn aud Keuny could succeed after Dillon and O'Brien? ‘WHAT PARNELL WAYS OY THE FIOHT. At a large gathering of costumed Gaolics yes- terday an address was presented to Mr. Par- the wildest hopes of the absolute free wader are given promise of fulfillment. Men who come here among the humbier, the ‘lis- contented classes, in different parts of the country sy, of what their own inions are, that where but a short while ago advocates of reduced tariff had to deal very gently with the protection question, lest they offend men who thought they were benefitted by protection, the cry is LOUD AND BOLD YOR FREE TRADE. The people do not stop at a slice, but demand the whole loaf. They are demanding more money aud are making all sorte of,demands be- sides, but the relief from taxation is the one thing for which they ery louder than for any of the rest. ‘Ihe democrats of Congress see this and are impressed with the idea that they will have to bring m » measure of relief far more radical than they have ever before con- templated if they are to meet the demands which the reform educa’ ‘campaign en- forced by the terrible exampie of the McKinley Dill bas excited. This imposes upon them @ very delicate task, which they are already thinking of seriously and preparing themselves for, and the more they think of it the deeper they are impressed with a sense of the neces- sity of keeping the party united and devoting themselves to this question, leaving other issues to be settled as they may. They must deepen the channel and keep within its bounds the torrent which has been set loose. They are sensible of the responsibility and it is consid- ered in all their plans for the future. THE SPEAKER AND THE COMMITTEES. There is a goneral agreement among the sev- eral candidates for the speakership that who- ever is elected Speaker of the uext House there will have to be a thorough reorganization of the ways and means committee, ao as to have every section of the country represented in the majority, the south being represented and nothing more. The danger of a sectional fight over the speakership has been considered and there is # practical agreement—excluding from it, of course, these northern candidates—that the best speakership material is to be found in the south, and that to the north, east and west it isa matter of much greater importance to control the committees. It is, erators, 2 e- garded by the wisest party managers as like that the 5 er that the other sections will have the mak the committees to their own satisfaction. ‘This will involve a general shaking up of the House and an overthrow of traditions as to prece- dence, but the situation, the introduction of the new element into the House, the fact that a majority of the democrats will aot come from ‘the south, renders it necessary, and it is con- sidered as obviously the best policy for the party. ONE PHASE OF PROTECTION. Senator Paddock Thinks Our Stomachs Should Be Looked After. “Perhaps I do look well, but I feel disgusted. If I don’t get the floor pretty soon nobody knows how completely my ordinarily angelic disposition will be transformed.” Senator Pad- Gock said that, and his remarks were addressed to a Sram reporter. “If the Nicaragua canal bill had not got shead of it in the order of business,” he continued, “my pure food bill would have been passed long ago. Of course it ought to be passed! Who saysit ought not to? Everybody eats— some of us more, several of us less—and I have yet to converse with the wretch whose appetite was so depraved that his stomach demanded adulterated victuals. Impressive Ceremony Over the Dusky Mon- arch’s Body. ‘The intest mail from the Hawaiian Islands brought the following account of the funeral of King Kalakaua, which took place on Sunday, February 15: David Kalakaua sleeps with his royal pred>- cessors in the'mausoleum of the Kamehamehas. His funeral today was the most imposing ever witnessed in the South Seas. The long period that the body of the dead king had been lying if state in the throné room of the palace was a solemn one. Religiousservices were frequently held during this time by the bishop of Honolulu and the clergy. The native guard have cease- leasly waved their, somber kahilis for nearly three weeks, and no Huin has marred the solemnity of the period or caused harsh wounds to fall upon Christian ears during the watch over the dead. me ‘The funeral ceremonies today properly com- menced st 9:30 in'the morning. when prayers were read for the last time in the throne room at the palace. Invitations had been iasued only to the I friends of the dead king. The bishop of Honoluli, assisted by the Rey. Alex- ander H. Mackintosh and the Rev. W. H. Barnes, and all the clergy of the city were pres- ent. A surpliced choir of Hawaiian Inds stood in a semi-circle at the foot of th ecoftin. ‘As the solemu procession passed from the throne room into the corridor the organ solo, “In Memoriam,” composed especially for the oc- casion by Wray Taylor, was played, und as the body was carried to the reyal hearse a hymn was slowly chanted by the choir of the Kawaia- has Church. ‘The litile procession passed down enue to the church under « naval and tuilitary escort, the goyernment band playing Handel's “Dead March.” the church the members of the royal family eptered first and ushers selected from the housebold officers conducted them to the front pews. When the congregation had assembled Wray Taylor presided at the organ, and as the last notes of “Brief Life is Here Our Portion” were played the bishop of Honolulu entered with bis assistants. The rej ir service of the Church of England was observed, and at noon the minute guns announced that the casket contain- ing the king’s remaina was being borne from the church to the royal catafalque. One last salute and the task of the bearers was over. ‘The funeral pageant, the t ever known in the South Sens, started to the boom of the minute guns. At the royal mausoleum the coftin was at once removed from the catafalque and carried within. ‘The bishop read the remaining portion of the Episcopal burial service, # native choir first chantiny twenty-second Psalm.
