4 “THE EVENING STAR. w GTON: ASHIN more than all the other papers published in Washington. ———————————————— Washington is fast becoming the first city of science in the hemisphere. For years there has been increasing disposition on the part of the various societies for the promotion of science to hold their annnal or occasional as- sembiies at the capital. Here, where political and social science on this continent has ite center, naturally and irresistibly, is the rally~ ing point of the material and psychological sciences. As the capital of the United States grows in size and inereases in importance with the political, moral and physical growth of the Tepublic, this power of attraction for scientific and literary bodies also develops. During the next fall a number of scientific associatious will meet here. ‘The American Association for the Advancement of Science will hold its next meeting in this city, probably about September About the same time will convene the In ternational Congress of Geologists, and the week preceding the first named association, the American Society of Microscopiste. The meeting of the latter body may demonstrate the propriety of selecting Washington as the regular abiding place of the society. The serii-annual summer session of the Geological Society of America will, by its constitution, be hold in this city about the time of the holding of the International Congress of Geologists. Wash- ington is decidedly the most convenient place for such a purpose ir all America, when the matter of communication by ryil and stea isconsidered. Lying between the Latin nations and Canada and in easy reach of the great sea- ports of Europe, its location is ideal. Con- sideration of convenience for temporary gather- ings combines with the showing of vast pern.a- nent collections of scientific material, and the | adoption of the capital as a congressional home | by large numbers of prominent scientific men, to cause the argument in favor of making Washington the Mecca of science in the New World to become irresistible. —— Although certain vague utterances of Mr. Hill are reculled for the purpose of making him availuble as the choice of the western and southern democrats, the New York candi- dates for the democratic presidential nom- ination are both anti-free coinage men from the necessities of the situation. Mr. Hill, no mote than Mr. Cleveland. can make an effective bid fer the support of the ultra silverites. Hence the latter's position is not weakened by his recent letter, so far as his supposed rivalry with the former is con- cerned. It is only the growl of disappointment that comes up from west and south, and which is stronger because of the decided ground in favor of free silver taken by the Farmers’ Alli- ance that may cause Mr. Cleveland's heart to sink; and there is no doubt that as a practical ‘You can't well afford to stay on the outside of our you'll have to the good use of saving yourselves money—for s “‘penny saved is apenny earned” you know. The republicans strengthened their position, or rather they made it possible to hold it by incorporating the reciprocity idea in the tariff measure. It re- mains to be sccn whether the democ-:ts can with safety mect the strong western and sout- ern demand for silver free coinage, and also whether if they do adopt the idea in the plat- form they can afford to nullify it by naming « candidate who contemns that policy in express terms. oe Tt was a wise decision in Congress to raise the Mexican mission to the first rank. The rela- tions of the two republics are so intimate and the importance to the older of the younger is ‘0 well recognized that the only wonder is that what is now dono was not long since seen to be indispensable. The opening of mines and rail- roads in Mexico and the development of other industries in which the United States have in- terest through the individual interest of their citizens are prime considerations fr determin- ing now to magnify the diplomatic relations between the two peoples. Some of the “fake” correspondents have evidently been furnishing the Senator with his data. The fact is that Major Harteuff, Chief of the Medical Department of the Depart- ment of the Platte, was there with a dozen sur- geons and a hospital corps fully equipped, making in ali nearly fifty physicians and at- vendanis. ee After six centuries the voice of statesmen in the Christian Church i# heard in the land as loudly procisximing the liberty of the mind and the rights of humanity as in the days of Runny- mede and Archbishop Langton. The revival fn leadership of the chureh is « significant feature of the times. The influence of Bishop Potter in behalf of higher polities and of Arch- bishop Gibbous in aid of workingmen is the samme sort of influence that is outspreading from the pulpit of Methodist, of Baptist, of Presbyterian and all other denominations. ‘The National Council of Women love to hold their meetings in the District of Columbia, where men have no more political rights than women havo. se The young man who “«rites pieces” on the @litorial page of the Charleston News and Courter might take a few lessous with ad- Vantage from the men of the south #ho were in the fight against General Sherman. —— While Senator Davis is working out that ap- propriation of $25,000 for the propagation, de- Yelopment and diffusion of the reindeer in Alaska cau't he wurk the District in to pay half Of itus a branch of the Semi-National Zoological Gardens ~~ ee - Between Mr. Cleveland, Speaker Seed and President Hazrison the silver Vill hess pretty hard row to hoe.
