Resolutions Adopted by the House of Repre- sentatives Eulogistic Speeches. ‘The House yesterday adopted the following resolutions reported by Mr. Cuteheon from the committee on military affairs: Resolved. That the House of Representatives: has beard with profound sorrow of the death at bis home, in New York city, on the 1th instant, of William Tecumseh Sherman, the last of the generals of the armies of the United States. General Sentiment Against Silver Legisia- tlon—Other Measures Discussed. The republicans of the House discussed the silver question in caucus last night, having in view = compromise. A great difference of opinion was made manifest during the diseus- sion. but the prevailing sentiment was opposed to silver legislation at this session. The dis cussion turned from the silver to the question of general business. AN AND WIFE WITH — — io THE PRESS CLUB. ‘The Organization Perfected at a Meeting Held Last Night. of the recent election, installing the officers elected and starting the club on its first year of existence. The red parlor of the Ebbitt House, in which the meeting was held, was well filled with newspaper men. The report of the in- tors of election was submitted, and Mr. 8. Kauffmann was declured elected president, Mr. F. H. Hosford, secretary, and Messrs. Hamilton, Merrick, Wellman, ‘Splain, Fearn, Johnson, Low, Powers and Godwin members the board of governors. The vote was so that there was no election of vice President and treasurer, and it was left to the card of governors to fill these offices from the candidates receiving the highest number of votes. A financial report and several commu- nications were read. one from the secretary of the International League of Press Clubs in- Viting the club to unite with that organization. The board of governors was instructed to have 200 copies of the constitution printed for use of members. The board of governors, which met after the club meeting adjourned, com- pleted the organization of the club by electing Mr. P_A.G. Handy as vice president and Mr. ‘Thos. B. Kirby as treasurer. As Mr. Powers had not qualified as a member of the club his place was filled by the drawing of lots between ‘the next two highest candidates. This resulted in Mr. Howard W. Thompson's becoming a member of the board. The members drew lots for long and short terms with the following Tesult: ‘Three years—Messrs. Godwin, Merrick and Johnson; two years—Mesers. Splain, Fearn and Wellman: one year—Messrs. Hamilton, Low and Thompson. 2 The following committees were appointed: House committee—Messra. Hamilton, Splain, ‘Haucly, Wilkins. Carson and Austin. Last night Officer Berkigt, while patroling his beat on the upper part of 32d street, noticed the strange conduct of Thomas Dover, a col- ered man, who is well known to the police of this precinet. When the officer placed him under arrest Dover struck him a terrible blow im the face and also tore his clothes consider- ably. After quite a straggle the officer man- aged to take him to the station. Dover is a brother of Al. Dover, who was charged with trying to rob Pierce'ssteze at Tenleytown some time ago.
