4 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1891. THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: -February 11, 1891. THE EVENING STAR bas the faliest Leen! ‘Cirealation of any Newspaper in the World, and as an Advertising Mediam is worth more than all the ether papers published in Washington. Referring to the report that Senator Gorman in his campaign for te-election would have the volunteered assistance of many of the ablest democratic speakers in both houses of Congress the Baltimore Sun points ont that the next election in Maryland is purely n state election, for state officers only, that the selection of a Senator is not the sole or the principal reason for which a legislature is chosen, and that a dix- ‘cussion of the local problems involved is strictly 0f a family nature anc cannot be participated in to advantage by speakers from abroad. The curse of municipal elections has been the con- trolling inttuenc Your Srrrse Costome. WHAT SHALL IT BEY THE EXHIBITION NOW TAKING PLACE aT TRE PALAIS ROYAL GIVES MANY HINTS. THE NEW GINGHAMS AND SOME CHARMING LACES FOR TRIMMING THEM. ‘The exhibition of Spring Novelty Suitings and the correct trimmings for them is attracting many to the Palais Royal. ‘The display has been complimented by in them of the issues of | the leading wodistes of the city. This morning's national politics. It is unquestionably true | arrival in trimmines isa few dozen pieces of Point de that state legislatures, including that of Mary- land, have tov often been elected and treated merely as a kind of political machinery, neces- sary to elect Senators, and more nseful to pro- mote partisan «hemes than to advance intelli- gently the material interests of the state. ‘The protest of the Sun is therefore timely. Meas- ures to improve the roads of the state, to pro- tect the oyster industry, to change the assess- ment law, and to amend the election laws, especially in the absurd and injurious pro- visions concerning registration, which were framed with political ends and not the welfare of the state in view, are of more importance as issues than the senatorship question. Upon these issues the legislature should be elected. ‘There is no prospect of any other than a demo- cratic legislature for the state, and there is no democratic candidate of strength to oppose Senator Gorman’s re-election. There is there- fore not the slightest excuse even with the strongest partisan to substitute for the perti- nent questions to legislative candidates con- cerning their views upon measures for the | development of the state the single inquiry whether they run with the machine and are for Gorman. If the ablest democratic Senators and Representatives concinde to advise the peo- ple of Maryland in the matter of electing their legislature it might be appropriate for them to skip general political jamation and urge upon their hearers the wisdom of choosing a body which will improve the roads, protect the | oyster and enact other obviously needed good laws. + ____. ‘The House District committee are consider- ing the Baltimore and Ohio railroad bill, which was discussed editorially a short time ago in Tre Srax. The fact that the project has good points ought not biind the committee to ob- jectionable and defective features in it, or pr vent their amendment in committee. Practi- cally a re-chartering of the road with a new route is proposed. The grade crossings. both within and without the city limits, should be reduced to the smallest number posible and, where streets are not yet opened, some pro- vision should be made for bridging them when they are opened. A station north of Massa- chusetts avenue and est of North Capi- tol street would be out of offen- sive proximity to the Capitol, would be nearer than the present site to the business and residence center and to the prin- cipal hotels, as a glance at the map will show, and would save the public the nuisance and the railroad the heavy expense of bridges on Maska- chusetts avenue and North Capitol street. Attention is also called to the fact that the bill contains no provision for the promised bridg- ing of North Capitol street. The power of con- demuation provided is much too broad and needs to be amended by « geographical limita- tion. — ——— Ey Spain is perceiving clearly what the United States and Cuba have already seen, that the reciprocity arrangements must include Cuba Gene Laces, expressly nade for trimming Gincham dresses.
