THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: MONDAY THE EVENING STAM has the fullest Lecal Circulation of any Newspaper in the Werld, and as am Advertising Mediam is worth more than all the otber papers published in Washington. ‘The biennial changes in the Senate of the United States are fast making. During last week the legislatures of New Hampshire, Con- jecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and North Da- kota, im the north, and Missouri, Arkansas and ‘North Carolina, in the south, have acted. In all these states the political parties have held what they had before, except in New York, where a democrat succeeds a republican. For the most part the old member was re-elected, the exceptions being the choice of Dr. Gallin- ger in New Hampshire in place of Mr. Blair, and that of Mr. Hansbrough in North Dakota instead of Mr. Pierce. Illinois, Kansas and South Dakota are still in the agonies of a daily ballot with chances about even for the two parties in Illinois and for the republicans and the coalition of independents and democrats in the other states. Wisconsin will chooe ex-Sec- retary Vilas next week, while Florida will not elect a democratic successor to Mr, Call until April. The points of interest in the state legis Intares yet toact are the great fight of the Far- mers’ Alliance against Mr. Ingalls in Kansas and the peculiar state of affairs in Mlinois, where the democrats have one plurality over the republicans and the Farmers’ Mutual Bene- fit Association have three :members who vote steadily for an industrial candidate. If neither Gen. Palmer nor ex-Senator Oglesby can com- mand farmers’ votes after a prolonged struggle it would seem to be necessary to drop the nom- inee and support either a regular party man agreeable to the F.M.B.A. or a farmers’ man who would receive the support of the third party. The result cannot be foretold. Lump- ing the result of the new senatorial elections, as far as they have been held, it appears that the democrats have gained in New York, where | atthe moment after election last fall it was not clear who had won, and lost on their caleu- | lation in New Hampshire by the action of the clerk in the organization of the legislature in Tae Grease Awaxextse s8Sy PERRY'S. As silently as nature pots forth the tender, green shoots of approaching springtime have the new woolen draperies crept from the store house of thought into brilliant reality. ‘They are new in every phase. This color has been added to that—until they present them- selves ip mauy-bued complexions of art and genius mingled. You will believe us when we tell you you have never secn snytiing Ike them. To talk about them is to attempt to reproduce in unvarnished speck | the soft and mellow glow of a setting sun and leaves the listener but the iuore impatient to stand before the picture in life. If feminine appreciation ever runs wild unbridie it now, for as pattern after pattern meets your jaze you will turn from one but to wonder at the exquisite beauty of the other—And then comes the try- ing time—Which one?— “‘How happy could I be with either Were t other dear charmer away!” ‘We have brought all our best judment into play in theirselection—and as the first chapter in a series of ‘wany volumes we offer—come and see what— Ge s-ineh Checked Saitings at 0c. The democrats have won in Wisconsin. If they win in Illinois and the Alliance wins in Kansas the present re- publican majority of fourteen, based on an original majority of two two years ago and the admission of the six new states, will be decreased to one of six. eed ‘Tubercular disease is often communicated by using the meat or milk of tuberculous cows. Among stall-fed dairy kine from 20 to 30 per cent, say the New York board of health, are sometimes found to be affected. Later dis- coveries confirm this report. The Connecticut commissioners on the diseases of domesticated animals have declared that “the flesh of tuber- culous animals is dangerous as food” and that ‘the milk of such animals is “unsafe for food even for swine or poultry." But neither in New York nor Connecticut, nor yet in Phila- deiphia, where it is admitted tuberculous cows by scores mingle with the dairy herds, have any steps been taken, so far as is known, to prevent the sale of food so infected. In Massa- chusetts infected herds in the vicinity of Bos- ton have been inspected by state officers and diseased cows have been killed. The Boston tles—are famous millers. These sources of life and causes of death should be everywhere subject to local and most careful inspection and to that end scientific investigation should be made in all Parts of the country. If there are at any points lack of the necessary laws or municipal regulations they should be forthwith provided. ‘The preservation of human life from such an insidious and powerful foe is an imperative ob- ligation upon government. If the straight democrats and certain alliance members of the Kansas legislature form s co- alition with the republicans to re-elect Senator Ingalls, a8 reported, it will not imply more than such things have implied in the history of politics. Senators Mitchell of Oregon and Dawes of Massachusetts have each owed an election to the Senate to such a combination. A few years before Senator Merrimon! was elected by a similar union of opposite elements. In all these instances the Senator was afterward as much a party man as if he had been chosen witbout the aid of a vote from the other side. a The great telegraphic cut-off yesterday is the prominent feature of current history. Early as At is, we can show you some spring tailoring that beats the ‘ready-made past” all to pieces. We told you last season that we'd be a year's experience better off—remember it?—and we haven't been asleep these twelve months. Of course we haven't brought a single one of the new fancy suits to the front yet. The ‘quiet Blacks you want first—what we call “‘all- the-yeur-round” fabrics—as good in July asin January. Genuine Clay—that's English and don't getzinto ready made clothing once in a dog's age, except through us—German worsteds and French Cassimeres—dress cloths—not “evening dress”—but the ‘king be's" for every other oc- casion. There's nothing new about the Wweaves—they've been perfect for years—but our yreater skill huscut and made them up into Beck, Cutaway and Double-breasted Frock Buits that challenge the best tailoring talent in the country, There's nothing Mke them ready made—and none better made to order. NOT A BIT TOO PREVIOUS. When winter begins to quit you'll be sur- prised how thick the warm days will crowd in. We've rot the advance guard of our new sup- ply of LIGHT WEIGHT OVERCOATS “*hold- ing the fort” a'ready. Don't ask what is new— COME IN AND SEE.
