THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C, MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 1891. * EVENING STAR has the fallesy“Lecal Circulation of any Newspaper, World, and ax an Advertising Meditim is worth more than all the other Dublinaed in wi Three sets of ae have hopes in Connecti- ent—the democfats, who appear to have elected M governor on the face of the re- turns; thefepublicans, who claim to be able to show, on scrutiny of the ballots, that they have chosen Merwin to be governor, and the Aseumbent, Gov. Bulkeley, who asserts that nobody has been declared to be elected and ‘that the two legislative days in which it could have been done inwfully have expired. The Senate is democratic, the house republican. No declaration of election or review of the re- turns bas been made except in the senate, as the house has simply referred the matter toa select committee to investigate and report. ‘This committee will mect next Wednesday if the democrats decide to meet with the majority atall The republicans wish to do one thing— to have the votes of thirty odd probibitionists counted which were rejected becamse ander the new ballot law they had the word “for” printed before the title of the office of the candidate ‘voted for. The counting of these votes would wipe oat the majority of the democratic candidate for governor. They base their claim on the ac- tion of the senate in reviewing the canvass and declaring the election of Morris, the demo- cratic candidate. Other matters are involved in the question. The senate has adjourned until Tuesday next, the house until the 20th in- stant. It will be scen at the former date whether the democrats will proceed to install the man their branch of the legislature has de- clared was elected or whether they will await the course of events. The situation is as badiy mixed as it well could be. oe Out in that part of the northeast section of this beautiful city of magnificent distances, where the festive goat blossoms as the rose of Sharon and the lily of the valley, and his fragrance fills the soft Swampoodle air a Goat Protective Association has been formed to the Aiscomfiture of Poundmaster Einstein and the defeat of the ends of justice. One of the rules and regulations governing the internal economy of the glorious capital of sixty-two million six hundred and twenty-five thousand two hun- dred and fifty people, more or less, provides that a goat which wanders unlicensed upon the purple hills of Swampoodle and browses on her Tuscions tomato cans or masticates her esculent old boot legs may be apprehended by the minions of the law, and being duly impounded its owner eball pay the sum of $1 in the coin of the realm for its restoration to the empurpled heights and the enjoyment of the tomato cans aforesaid. But the people affected hate this tyrannous restriction upon the liberty of the goats and their own property rights, so each man’s castle is a house of refuge to the inno- cent kid or the rancid old butter, and when the minions of Einstein appear every door is opened and the fleeing goats escape pursuit and are hidden away until the danger is averted. By this means the goat population in the north- east is rapidly increasing while the pound- master’s goat fund is actually dwindling away to invisibility and the poundmaster refuses to be comforted. en What will be the plan of campaign in the Senate, now that silver is to the fore and elec tions legisiation har been relegated to the rear of the column, or to the bottom of the sea with BieGinty? Can the republicans compromise on something like the finance bill under discussion that body or will they pass a free, silver bill pure and simple and isk adterse influences in the House and at the other ev of the avenue? President do if bill providing for the free coinage of silver were presented to him? And what would the silver men do if the alterna- tive were offered of no bill or free silver with the two per cent bond provision to which they have made such strenuous objection? These are the questions now prominent in political affairs, and on the answers to them much of the future of American parties depends. ——————_ The robbery of Mr. John H. Heizer, a census clerk, on the B. & 0. Railroad last Saturday night, with the resulting injury to him, is the very boldest act of the kind that has taken place within the city limits in a considerable time. The robbers seized Mr. Heizer as he at- tempted to pass from the second into the smoking ear, abstracted his watch end money from bis pockets and then pushed him off the train and one of his feet was crushed under the wheels.
