PHESEVE COAL Tes expression “‘seventh and last year” of his in- ‘ cambency, which is a hint in some people's es- timation that he will not run again for the ex- ecutive office of New York. Whatever effect these declarations may have on the democratic presidential candidature the matter is still too far off for any absorbing interest to be taken in them, and the public is far more concerned in the organization of the northwestern legisla- tures. The fight is close in South Dakota, where the democrats and independents elected the speaker of the house by one majority, and the republicans organized the senate by the same majority. The republicans claim that they will re-elect Senator Moody. ‘The Farmers’ Alliance organized the Nebraska legislature. In Minnesota a peculiar state of affairs existed in respect to organization, for the senate divided the honors between the demoerats and alliance, but no compromise was reached in the house and therefore no speaker was chosen. East- ward matters are different politically, so far as appears in the decision of the New Hampshire supreme court. It was decided that there was no power in the judiciary to interfere with the clerk and the democratic writs were dismissed. ‘This ruling leaves Clerk Jewett master of the situation, and as he has said he would admit the “if entitled” members of the house there seems no way to prevent the republicans from organizing the legislature and electing the United States Senator in place of Senator Blair unless they split up into factions. While there has been some disposition to do so the prob- abilities are that the republicans will elect the ‘Senator. ee The telegraphic correspondence in the case of Col. Forsythe, published yesterday in Tar Stax, shows that Gen. Miles stopped a tele- gram of congratulation tothe seventh cavalry, and stated that the action of the colonel com- manding it would undoubtedly be the subject of investigation, on the charge that .he di sition of his forces was fatally defective, and that “a large number of soldicrs were killed and wounded by the fire from their own ranks, anda very large number of women and children were killed in addition to the Indian men.” This action was taken and these statements made before anything had come from the east concerning the Wounded Knee affair except the telegram of co..zratala- tion. It is evident therefore that Col. For- sythe’s conduct was criticised in the army facing the Indians as unsoldierly and cruel, deserving to be investigated. before any suggestion to that effect came from official We are not Jess aware than you are of the fact that the usual 50 cent Corset is nogood.
