The entertainment given in the Georgetown seventh and eight grades of the Weightman school was a success. Donnelly, Koberts, Steep and Brod- rick. The singing of Misx Meads, the recita- tions of Mr. Whitaker and the banjo select by Messrs. Barnard and Parker and of Maude and Messrs. There are seven smaller children who, it is reported, are without shoes and stockings. Debating Society. V. E. Hodges, C. L. Sturtevant and George H. Brown of the Ar- gus Club defended the affirmative of the ques- tion and Edward DeKnight, John F. Downing and George W. In the Police Court yesterday Judge Miller sentenced John Sayles, a colored man, to ninety days on the farm for vagrancy and fined him £50 for carrying a concealed weapon, a pistol, as stated in Tux Stan. This morning a young woman with tears in her eyes appeared in Lawyer Carrington’s office and begged him to get John out of prison. Tonight, she suid, was the time set for their wedding and Judge Miller's action necessitates a postponement of the marriage. aera A Washington Physician in London. Dr. D. K. Care: In regard to the benefits of advertising, and the merits of Tux Srazas ® medium, I have this to say: Topened my two stores, 1510 and 1512 7th street northwest, offering farniture, china, &c., for cash only, not quite one year ago. I came to the city unknown, but determined to avail myself of every moral and legal right to push twenty years had already taught mo that judi- cious newspaper advertisement was indispensa- ble to the ultimate success of any enterprise. T believe that those who think they can do business independent of the press will always find their ‘Desiness horizon painfully circum- thriving trade of competitors who enjoy the use of printers’ ink. I consider Taz Stas the best medium I have evér used, and upon calculation I find I get more for the money than I ever got elsewhere. Thavean advertisement of fifty lines printed and put into the hands of not less than 100,000 readers for $2.10 a day, for which amount I could not buy the slips on which to print it.| I have found the patrons of Tue Star to be read- ers of its advertisements, and in no other place have I so sensibly felt the result of advertisement as in Washington. very careful in every instance to confine my statements to absolute fact, making them as plain as possible and at the same time as inter- esting asIcould. Ihave not overdrawn or said anything to tax the credulity of the most skeptical. While I have, from time to time, named some unheurd of prices, to which great numbers have responded —some even from New York and Philadelphia—in not one instance have Theurd a customer express dissatisfaction upon seeing the goods uamed. By constant ad- vertising I have found an outlet for thousands of dollars, where. but for printer's ink. people would not have known I was in existence. In this short time my business is known from Georgetown to Anacostia and from the Navy Yard to Takoma. In this connection [ would say thatnoone need expect to realize any substantial value from an advertisement un- less they live up to its statements. Reckless disregard for the truth will recoil upon the writer, and prove a hindrange rather than a help to his business. My effort has been to ey confidence in the minds of the people, and I am free to admit that Tux Star has Proved the principal channel through which have necomplished the most sutiefuctory work in this direction. The #tutements made in advertisements sbould always be sacred pledges to the public. Readers should be so educated (by finding everything as represented when responding to an advertisement) that whatever statement is made no question of its truthfulness will suggest itaclf. I have always felt that the man who will misrepresent in newxpaper advertising will do the same in making a sale. When Iorder my advertise- meut stopped you may know I am going out of business. Yours truly, M. C. Guasty. — CLINICAL MEETING OF THE HOME- OPATHIC DOCTORS. An Interesting Aftalr, The Clinical Society of Maryland and the District of Columbia held its yegular monthly meeting last evening in the parlors of the St. James Hotel, which were selected as the tem- porary place of meeting. About thirty-eight members were present, twenty arriving at 8 p.m. from Baltimore, among them Drs. C. H. Thomas, J. 8. Barnard, Flora Brewster, Henry Chandlee, E. H. Canden, F.C. Drane, H. F. Garey, 0. E. Janney, Harvard Lindley, T. E. Sears, Elirjdge C. Price, R..W. Mifflin, G. T. Shower, N.W. Kneass, W.L. Dodd, W. D. my name and business into the very faces of the people of Washington. An experience of Thomas, Elias C. Price, John Hood, W. L. Mor- gan, D. F. Shipley, Paul De Ford and E. H. Holbrook. Soon after 8 o'clock Dr. Stearns, president of the Washington branch, called the meeting to order and the clinical work was begun. Drs. Richard Kingsman, 'T. Mac- donald, 8.5. Moffatt and B.F. Gibbs each brought before the society a patient the nature of whose affection was unique and instructive. One at a time the patients were presented and the diagnosis, etiology. pathology, treatment and prognosis of cach was entered into by all the members present and gave rise to much earnest and interesting discussion. The inter- change of medical thought, scientific facts and clinieal observations was so thoroughly zealous and instructive that adjournment was not thought of till the Maryland contingent real- ized that there was hardly time left to catch the 11:30 train for Baltimore. The next meeting will be held in Baltimore in January. eee Negro Thieves Sentenced. Saturday evening Jake Beecham, an Anacostia, negro, was passing down 11th street southeast, when some overcoats in front of Louis Gold- berg’s store attracted his attention and he took one and went on across the bridge to his home. Policemen Branson and Jones arrested him, but did not recover the coat. Jake was tried in the Police Court this morning and sentenced to sixty days in jail. Another Anacostia negro, Edward Johnson, was before the Police Court this morning charged with stealing a pair of rubber shoct from the same store. A sentence of thirty days was imposed. Rees Sent to the Grand Jury. In the case of Col. H. C. Stewart, charged with robbing Frank Loving, as heretofore men- tioned in Tux Staz, counsel waived an exam- ination in the Police Court and the case was sent to the grand jury. dase eee An Incident of the Storm. One of the young women employed in the government printing office, who resides on Capitol Hill, was near the Baltimore and Ohio railroad yesterday morning on her way to work when the wind got beneath her umbrella and carried it out of sight. In her efforts to cap- ture it her hat followed. There was a man near her and he just laughed until his sides ac! and then walked —— front of her to the office, not once offering her shelter beneath his umbrella. He laughed until he had almost reached the office end then @ blast of wind wrenched his umbrella out of his hand and his hat followedit. ‘And then I laughed,” said the young woman in telling the story. ink ae ANACOSTIA. THE NEW DRIDGE ON FIRE. For two or three nights the gas in the village has burned very poorly and last ‘night the pipe on the bridge parted, resulting in total dark- ness. It was supposed there was aleak in the the pipe where it crowes the branch, and a | force of men were at work yerterday trying to | find the break. Soon after the worknien left last evening the bridge was discovered to be o fire along the line of the pipe, the exeaping gas having by some means been ignited. ‘The wooden part of the bridge beneath the side- alk on the esat side burned freely until the fire engine began on it, ‘The damage was not serious. The village will be lighted by candles and oil temporarily. DAMAGE BY THE STORM.
