Father Clarke Better. Rev. Father William M. Clarke, who is stationed at St. Aloysius Churoh, has been crit- ically ill for some days, but during tho past fow days there has been a marked improvement in his condition, and the physicians now have hopes of his recovery. Father Clarke was taken sick about three weeks ago aud has since snffered from an at- tack of typhoid malarin. During several days of his illness it was thought that he could not live twenty-four hours longer and during the carly part of this week the last sacraments were administered to him. Blake, who was well known to older Washingtonians, died yesterday in Baltimore county, Md., from whence his remains will be brought for interment at Oak ceme- tery tomorrow afternoon at 4 The deceased was abont fifty-five years old. He was graduated at Georgetown College and then studied medicine under Dr. Panconst in Philadelphia, afterward traveling extensively a Europe and attending the medical schools of Paris, Berliu and Vienna, On his return he was for some years attached to the staff of thi old Washington infirmary, and when this | institution burned in the early pert of the war Dr. Blake ceased active practice, for being very tly built and nevor enjoying robust health he was unable to endure the hardships of a regular practitioner. Witarxetox, N.C., Oct 17.-A tornado passed through the northwestern section of Robeson county, 85 miles west of here, yester- day afternoon. Great damage was done to Property in its path and several persons were killed near Maxton, N.C., and it is feared that there has been great loss of life and property along the track of the storm.
