Three Plates of Foreign Manufacture Fired at From 6 and 8-Inch Guns. Today at Annapolis there is taking place the most important test of armor steel that has ever occurred in this country, Three plates of foreign manufacture are being fired at from six and eight-inch guns at 90 feet range with steel, case-hardoned, armor-piercing projec- tiles, for the purpose of determining the en- durance, strength and other qualities of power. The competition was open to American manu- facturers, but they are not ready to make such plates, and consequently the oniy plates tested today are from England and France. The English plate is from the Cammell works, compound of iron and steel, und the others are from the foundries of Schneider & Co. at Le Creusot. There are two of the latter, one of solid steel and the other nickel steel. ‘The tests are being conducted before a board of naval officers, ot which Rear Admiral Kim- ix president. ‘The result of the tests will be to determine the standards which the Navy Department wiil expect to be upheld by the American makers in their future productions, ‘Ihe plates were sold to the government by the foreign firms. This is the first public test of armor steel ever held in the world. A large number of ofticials and officers were invited to witness the tests and weut down to Annapolis this morn- ing. EVENTFUL NOVEMBER. A Strike of 20,000 Miners in Indiana and Illinois Ordered. Patrick McBryde, member of the executive board of the United Mine Workers, was at Pittsburg last night on his way to Springtield, UL, where he will order a strike of the 40,000 miners employed in the Indiana and Illinois fields, The strike will be for an advance in wages, and will begin November 1. In the northern districts an advance of 7!, cents is asked. In the southern districts tho advance asked is 10 cents, The demands were made last spring.
