al THE EVENING «TAR: WASHINGTON. p. c. THE EVENING STAR. |A Bo Rom WASHINGTON: more than all the other papers published In Washiagtes. —————— By a vote which surprised oven himself the Hon. Thomas B. Reed, Speaker of the Fifty- first Congress, has been elected to the Fifty- second Congress, From a plurality of 2.488 in 1888 he goes to = plurality of nearly 5,000. Fearing s reduction and loss of prestige by consequence, he and his friends went vigor- ously to work and brought out the party vote, ‘The democrats nominated a bright young man end seemed to be supporting him with spirit Bat either they had no good organization or Mr. Reed's stalwart course as Speaker has won btm great popular favor with the Maine voters, Despite everything written to the contrary by those who were deceived by surface appear- ances, it is clear that the result in the Portland district must be attributed to the overwhelm- ing popularity of the Speaker and to an in- dorsement by bis party in Maine of his admin- wetration. To have simply upheld the high- water mark of 1888 would have been « vietory under the circumstances, The doubling of that plurality is such a triumph of man and party policy as has seldom been achieved in the political annals of the United States. Whatever other opinion is entertained of him or his conduct in the re- public's third place of political honor, in any , it is clear that the Speaker -whelmingly indorsed by his home people. Whether ho will have as national fature beyond the Fifty-second Congress or not, the approbation of Maine has been pro- nounced ina manner to give him and his ad- mirers entire satisfaction. The election in ali the Maine districts is significant. Casting the gteatest majorities in an off year in twonty- four years. and the highest, except in 1884, in any presidential year, the republicans of Maino have restored the party prestige that was so badly damaged by the ominous result in Ver- mont, oe ‘The Pennsylvania railroad, which has with cool effrontery monopolized all the District days lately, oceupied all of yesterday in the at- tempt to crowd through the Atkinson grab bill (which has “millions in it”) without making any adequate concessions, or allowing any needed restrictions for the protection of life at grade crossings, The railroad lobby were on hand in full force, and with a Pennsylvania railroad attorney in charge of the District com- mittee, with a large number of the active oppo- nents of the bill absent from the city; and satis- fied that they had perfected all the requisite combinations, they were confident of their ability to rush the job through that was to put so much money in their pockets. But they were hiudered in the “rush” project by such sturdy friends of the people as Messrs, Holman, Anderson, Kerr, Quinn, Stockdale, Pickler and others. The railroad men, while resisting ade- quate amendments, were compelled to concede some poiats in the interests of the public be- fore the bill got through the committee of the whole; and, in consequence of the absence of a quorum, were unable to pass 1t when it was re- ported to the House. Should there be another District day this session the Atkiuson bill will again monopolize the whole day to the excia- sion of all other District business. The Penu- syivania railroad is a mighty institution. —<—<—<—<—— > The business men representing the New York produce exchange, regardless of politics, are out in aset of resolutions emphasizing their views in favor of » reciprocity plank in the tariff? platform, and Mr. Blaine smiles quietly to himself and thinks good-naturedly of his treatment by the ways and means comumittee when be first suggested reciprocity. Business is a bigger thing than politics after all in tariff legislation, and all politicians are not good Dusiness men. Altoona, Pa, is mot far from Cresson. In faet it is at the foot of the mountain. The President is at Cresson. Yesterday the light- ning struck Altoona pretty much all over. And it struck it hard. If the lightning strikes this close to Mr. Harrison in 1890 what may we ¢ pect it to do im 18927 The gentleman is ca tioned to be carefal. $$ 0 Miss Margaret Blanche Best of Meadville, Pa, aged twenty-five, ought to be happy not- withstanding all the world knows how old she is. She has won the prize offered by Dr. Sar- gent of Harvard College to the woman possese- ange figure which should most nearly pr: of perfect symmetry, and there were three thousand competitors. But Miss Best will not be happy long. Reporters will be coming to interview her and get diagrams of her for pub- lication. Kodak fiends will be taking snap shotsather. The dime museum man will be after her for exhibition. The manager of the chorus and ballet will be offering her large sums Modistes will be importuning her to come for them to try gowns on. She will have to travel on her shape entirely, and Margaret Biaache Best will fiad that ber last name is delusion and a snare. Sa New York has not much to say about Chi- cago's method of handling the world’s fair, because New York knows that Chicago is doing better with « very large thing on a few months" practice than New York is doing with a com- paratively small matter and five years of ex- perience. This painfully palpitating question as to who is Mrs. Astor should be settled before Newport society bursts its sash in vanity and vezation of spirit, Who is Mra Astor, anyway, and why can't she put her number and street on her cards? Surely she doesn’t want to be at home to intruders, Mr. Mndd’s pitifal attempts yesterday to ex- plain away his foul slande:s upon the people of South Washington, in the interests of the Penn- sylvania railroad, only sink him deeper im the mire. Mr. Mudd must go. ee Mr. T. B. Reed of Maine voted at his polling place im Portland yesterday abuat elevon o'clock and there is a desire in these parts to know whether be voted for the democratic candidate for Congress. $$ A vigilance committee composed of Knights of Labor could do the order a power of good by getting in some prompt and efficient work on those New York Central train wreckers. — ‘The Australian baliot system was not used in Maine yesterday. This was a painful over- sight om the part of the democratic state com- inittee, $$ —___ ‘Those Saco democrats will probably be writ- ing down to Superintendent Portor insisting Bpon a recount when the clectton retarus aro —_ ee Will Commissioner eecompany Con- gressman Smyser on his stumping tour through Maj.
