THE EVENIN iG STAR. ~~ WASHINGTON FRIDAY ING STAR has the fullest Lecal ‘tion of any Newspaper in the Werid, and as an Advertising Medium ts worth The ‘excitement in South Caroline 0 over nulli- fication and secession was probably no greater than that witnessed there at present over the internal controlof the dominant party. The democratic state convention split into two un- equal factions yesterday, the singular feature having been that those who call themselves regulars or straightouts, seceded and left the Tillmanites in complete mastery as the regu- larly organized democracy. At least that is the way it seems to outsiders. The Tillman men appear to have secured about three-fourths of the convention which has just fallen apart into two bodies. Their program is to consti- tute the nominating convention for state offi- cials to be held next month by delegates chosen in county conventions, rather than, as proposed by the other faction, by primaryelection. It has been said that the straightouts rely to a large extent on the friends of the present holders of state and county offices, who have so far kept out of the fight, but who sympathize with the old organization as against the Tillman party. Unless there is some arrangement by which the republican vote will be cast, pretty much as & whole, for one faction or the other, it is going to be very intetesting from now on in the Pal- metto State. The Charleston republicans ap- pear to prefer a straight ticket with ex-Mayor Cunningham for governor. The “straights” of the other party evidently expect to receive alarge shareof the republican vote in the eastern halfof the state. The warfare isin some measure a contest between the upper and lower regions of the state, as well as between the old and new elements in politics and so- ciety. ult while to outsiders the bolt in the prelimi- nary convention looks like a permanent split in the party, the organs of the respective factions in Charleston both say that there will be no split in the sense of an independent ticket. ‘The Avws and Courier thinks that the Septem- ber state convention, with anything like or- ganization on the part of the straightouts, will be controlled by them. The Tillman organ, the Sun. says that the August convention set- tled everything, by which it seems to claim that the substitution of a Tillmanite committee for the old committee has secured in advance the majority of the nominating convention. ——— ‘Twenty-five thousand barrels of whit y Were totally destroyed by fire in Louisville yoster- day and Kentucky stands stunned and speech- jess. No ery of relief goes forth, for there ean be no relief. Hers is that unutterable sor- row which falls with crushing force only once in perhaps a hundred lifetimes. Kentucky needs only silent sympathy. Hers is not @ wound that may be healed by words or deeds. She wants no bread for her hungry. She asks no roofs for her shelterless. She seeks no shoes for her barefooted little ones. She calls for no clothes to shield her from the elements, She asks only the Christian comfort that comes from the touch of human hearts. She wants only the tears of those who have tasted the bitterness of woe and have met desolation face to face. Her eyes are dry today and her heart is parched. Hope and joy are ashes in her month, and corn and rye in their fatness are dead sea fruit upon her lips. A cloture which permi indefinite amendments, and motions te adjourn alternating with these speeches and votes on amendments, is a cloture that does not and cannot change any rule of the Senate, now in being, permitting free debate. It is cloture from not giving clotur $6 The Paris Figaro ina burst of excitement ealis for the arming of French forts on the German frontier to repel an invasion which may occur at any time. The Figaro ought to + published im a country like ours, which does uot begin to lock its stable until the horse is stolen. One of the compensations for our de- fenceless condition is that we are not startied every few weeks by some impetuous and pen- sanguinary editor jumping iuto print with a wild eall to arms and an arming of oar fort- resses on the frontier. ~ —— oe Climatically California has the advantage over our Eastern Shore. but by proper diversity and close attention to the smaller fruits the Eastern Shore on account of its neighborhood to market will still be ahead. The not un- frequent failure of the peach and other large fruit crops in the eastern states should induce the fruit grower to go even more largely into the raising of figs, pears, grapes and berries — + Tbsen reverses the rule of some great artists— he makes wife copy his manuscript: whereas they make their works copies of their wives’ beauty and character. ———— The United States tariff is physically exciting the English. A start was made on crate-maker Samuel Warren, yesterday, who took his life because business was stagnant. The United States tariff will not become, however, a uni- versal mode of capital punishment, because, while it is intended to kill in England, 1t is ex- peeted to make alive in the United States of America, $a 9 ee Twenty-five thousand barrels of “hot Scotch,” or blazing Kourbon, whichever way you nominate it, was too much of a morning dram even for The Swiss goverr Teil legend, bow-and-arrow, apple, boy, and ‘Tyrant Gessler, on the ground that it is merely &@ prototype of the hatchet story. Who is to protect the sweet confidence of our childhood against the historical critic with his morbid love of truth and nothing but the truth? — + If desertions continue on the evolutionary squadron at the rate recently reported 1t will be more appropriate to call it the revolution- ary squadron, a The opponents of death by electricity had a Brest deal to say about the frightral mental sufferings of Kemmler, who, however, went to the fatal eLair sound in mind, but they are not raising eny especial how! over Smith, the Pitts- burg wife murderer, who, after two sentences tw be hanged, esenper at last by going crazy. — + The young men of Washington are hereby hotitied that at come of the Maryland mountain resorts the proportion of young women to men is as 25 to 1 and they had better stay at home Until the rush is over —— + Irvine Dungan, the democratic nominee in the thirteenth Ohio congressional district, is the poet who wrote “If I Should Die Tonight.” If Mr. D. should happen to come to Congress and could get a few of his poems into the Kecord much would be forgiven him for being & poet. oo About the ouly apparent need of a federal elections bill is to prevent those werring South Carolina democrats from totally exterminating each other. $$ oe __ Senator Quay and Speaker Keed are not partners in the harmony, peace and branch business any lon, Gu: T gE Besr.
