It is currently rumored in New Jersey that the cranberry interests of Burlington and ad- jacent counties are to be boomed to a consid- erable extent by a syndicate of English capi talists, who, it is stated, expect to gain control and have under cultivation some 5,000 acres of bog. W. 8. Cook of New York city, who repre- sents the syndicate, has been in communication some time with Charles Pittman, who is super- intendent of the Upton tract in Burlington county, which comprises some 25,000 acres of land, for the purpose of buying a portion of the tract, but nothing definite has resulted from their correspondence. ‘the number of acres said to be desired b: this syndicate for cranberry culturo must he been overstated, for the reason that while there are now many men engaged in this busi- ness, yet there are not 5.000 and perhaps not 4,000 acres in the state used for this purpose, and only 500 acres of the vast Upton tract con- tains cranberries, the remainder not being fit for such cultivation. “It is an easy matter to buy 5,000 acres of land, but it is another thing to get that much bs op which cranberries can be grown. Those 0 are now in possession of successful bi would not sell them at $10 per acre, the syndi cate's price,” said a large grower. Tho amount of land engaged in this industry in Burlington, Ocean, Atlantic and Camden counties is about 4.000 acres, and it is difficult to see how the syndicates’ expectations could be carried out if it owned ali the land under cranberry culture in the state, y2aee PEARS’ isthe PUREST, BEST ond Cleanest AP .xz. Hess Eleva- tor Company in Chicago and a member of the Board of Trade since its formation, failed yes- terday. He was short about 2,000,000 bushels of oats, and the recent rapid rise in the price of that cereal forced him to the wall. His liabil- ities are estimated at $100,000 and he had about $80,000 up in margins, Three months ago, when oats first commenced to advance, Hess made a great deal of money. He turned too quickly, eps and ran selling enormous quantitics, He kept on selling and the market continued to advance. R. G. Tennant, a small trader in provisions chiefly also ordered his trades closed. He at times traded very heavily and was supposed to be acting for a well-l known banking firm, MRS. GRANT'S FAITH. : The Dying General Ar Anointed With the Water of Lourdes, A very curious story is told about Gen. Ulyssus 8, Grant during his last illness by Mrs. Richard Crowley in her recently published book, “Echoes from Niagara.” The New York World says: Mra. Crowley is the wife of the ex-Congressman who was candidate for the United States Senate and a political power in New York state. He and his wife live in re- tirement at Lockport, although it is not un- likely that he will be a candidate for a renomi- nation this fall in his old congressional district. He was, perhaps, the most trusted friend Ches- ter A. Arthur had in the interior of the state. Mra. Crowley tells the story alluded to in that part of her book which describes the stay of herself and her beautiful nen gt Maud, at Santa Fe for the benefit of the child's health, ‘Their stay was useless, it may be added, for the charming girl died at cighteen of hered- itary consumption. This daughter was be- lieved to be engaged to marry Alan Arthur, the President's son. Mra, Crowley,a Roman Catholic, was in the ancient church of San Miguel, praying for the recovery of her daugh- ter, then very near death. She is speaking of the faith which impels one ‘+to press on to the hrines where healing is promised.” She says she would love to see the grotto of Lourdes in France, with its mound of cratchos, when she suddenly tells this story: “The wife of Gen. Grant once told me just before her husband's death that she, though Protestant, could not resist carrying away with her a bottle of the waters of Our Lady's spring at Lourdes and, when the general had one of his most death-like spells of weakness and they feared he might never breathe again, she | Sate the sacred contents of this vial upon ‘is head and invoked heaven's mercy on this bell gee and good man, that he might be F yet a little longer to his country. = said she did not claim the boon for her husband, as that might be too selfish and personal, but that his country might a little longer keep the leader who had saved it. ‘The prayer was granted, and he lived to finish the story of his life, so dear to the people of America, and such blessing to his fondly loved wife and children. ‘The world may think it was the remedies given go skill- fully by his patient and learned physicians, but who shall say that it was not the Virgin Mary's answer to a woman's prayer? Who shall say that the Saviou:, who caused the dark eyes of Jnirus’ daughter to awaken, did not speak once more in merey, though to mortal eyes and ears he was unseen and unheard?" LADY DUNLO ON THE STAND. She Positively Denies the Charges in the Petition for Divorce. Mr. Gill, counsel for Wertheimer, the corre- spondent in the Dunlo divorce case in London, delivered a vigorous address to the jury yester- day afternoon. He described how Lady Dunlo had been hunted by detectives, He gave Sir Charles Russeil a scoring, saying he objected to men being shadowed. He spoke of Marma- duke Wood as the creature who inspired, even among the court spectators, an instinctive dis- like, and said he was sorry for Dunlo having a friend who was a liar and perjurer. When Lady Dunlo tearfully begged her husband to tuke her abroad with him and he replied that he had no means sho offered to work for thom both, Mr. Gill said he did not want to shock this nobie family, but he would surely be per- mitted to suggest that the impecunious scion of nobility might have obtained some employ- ment. Lady Dunlo at this point entered the witness box, looking pale and exhausted. She, how- ever, bore the ordeal of along and searching examination splendidly, She detailed the his- tory of her liaison with Weston, the father of her child, and solemnly declared that she had never been Wertheimer's mistross, After her marriage she begged Lord Dunlo to take her to Austfalia, as he promised, but he said if he went alone his father would allow him upon his return to live with her. If he remained in England his father would have nothing to do with him. Dunlo left immediately. Shortly after Wertheimer’s return from America she went to live with him in his house. He never slept in the house during the time she was liv. ing init. She asserted that the detective’ story about their struggle near a window was untrue. She told Wertheimer not to enter the house alone, as she was being watched. Wer- theimer uever kissed her after her marriage, but did once before it, and that was on his de- parture for America, A young fellow sitting in the rear of the court room snickered at this admission and was summarily ejected, Judge Harmer remarking with an angry look that he wou!d not allow any expression of feeling among spectators, who were mostly beige aud women, They became uieter after this reprimand. Lady Dunlo said sue never loved Wertheimer, who, she claimed, jored her. Sir Charles Russell failed to elicit thing remarkable in the cross-examination, ‘The fair witness denied that while Weston was in jail she rapidly grew more intimate with Wertheimer. She related how they went to Trouville and Paris together. She did not give her name at the former place, where they had their meals together. je sald that they did not occupy the same room, but admitted that their apartments communicated with each other. The maid, she added, used to leave the connecting door open, and she often locked it. On returning to London she continued to ac- company Wertheimer from place to place, but did not live under the same roof, ‘This ended the examination for the day. Lady Dunio and her sister upon leaving the court room were followed through the streets by a crowd, but there was not a display of sen- timent. One of the documents handed to the judge, but which was not read, was from Lord Albert Osborne, who took that method of deny- ing on oath the testimony of Marmaduke Wood ‘that he was one of those who tossed up a penny to see who should marry Lady Dunlo. ——_- ree Anticipated by a Thief, About a month ago Nathan Shoemaker, an old bachelor, who lived with his two maiden sisters in Allentown, Pa., died, leaving an es- tate valued at about $4,000, a considerable por- tion of which was in cash. Before his death Shoemaker told his sisters that ina certain bureau drawer on the second floor was a box containing #1,000 in gold and a purse contain- ing €100. He said the key to the drawer was in a certain bag ‘and was concealed in a quan- tity of shot, On the day of Shoemaker's death the sisters secured the key, 006, "Fp the drawer, but did not find the $1,000. purse and its contents were undisturbed. mystery re- mains unsolved up to this time and there is no clue to the thief.
