WESTERN MARYLAND Washington County Census Returns— New Industries, Politics, Etc. Correspondence of Tax Evenrxa Stan. Hacenstown, July 24, Dr. Wm. H. Perkins, the census supervisor for this district, has given outa tabulated state- ment showing a comparison between the popu- lations of the principal towns in this county under the census of 1880 and 1890. This state- ment shows Hagerstown's population has been increased by 3,545, Williamsport has lost 272, Sharpsburg has lost 115, Hancock has lost 147 and Boonsboro has lost 82, In 1880 the popu- lation of Washington county was 38,562; in 1890 it is 40,012. a gain of 1,350. The county's gain in population in the decade between 1870 and 1880 was 3,950, so that its increase from 1880 to 1890 was only about one-third of the rate dur- ing the previous ten years, Hagerstown is to have two new industries— one wglass factory and the other a wagon fac- tory. Extensive buildings for their use are in course of erection in Corbett’s new addition to the town. Fauquier Watre Sccpuvr Serixas, July 24, The opening german of the season's series took place last evening in the spacious ball room and proved a complete success. The mantels and deep open fireplaces were decked for the occasion with ferns and a profusion of wild flowers and the chandeliers wreathed with evergreens and trailing vines. The cotillion of twenty-five couples was led by Miss Annie Prall of Washington with Mr. Maddux of War- renton, and the figures, though owing to the brief time allowed for the arrangement devoid of favors, were continued far into the morning hours until the closing strains of Weber's Bard in the popular waltz of “Down Went Mc- Ginty” warned the unwearied dancers that all things must atlength bave an end, and the waiting vehicles with their sleepy drivers and patient teams were soon rolling rapidly away in the moonlight to the various points beyond. Mrs. Clara Haley, a pale-faced little woman, Spplied to the police of St. Louis yesterday for information concerning a certain Mr. and Mrs. Munller, but more especially for a certain little five-months-old baby whom the Mullers are supposed to have in their possession. When informed that the baby was dead she burst into tears and created a pathetic scene in the chief's office. Inquiry by # reporter as to why Mrs. Haley should take so much interest in Mrs. Muller's baby developed a sensationally romantic story, of which the following is a substance: Mrs. Haley is = widow of a former well- known restaurant proprictor, who died, leaving her in want, with a five-year-old boy to sup- Pe and well on the way toward motherhood again. When her baby came she straggled to care for it, but finally concluded to give it into better hands. Dr. Russell Abell told her he knew of a woman who wanted a little baby, and, on promise that she could see her child often, she agreed to give it up. According to appointment a lady called on Mrs. Haley and said she had been sent by Mrs. Vogal, living at acertain number on Chante avenue, to get the baby. After arranging for the mother to see itat certain times, and promising many things, she carried the child away. This was last May. A week afterward the mother called at the address given, but Suspecting some- she sought and after great difii- the lady who had called on her, that her name was Mrs, Muller. denied that she had Mrs, Haley's child, saying that she had given it to another woman; that the baby in the house was her own and Mrs. Haley should not see it. Mrs. Haley claims to have learned that Mrs. Malier had secured her baby to dupe her hus- band, who threatened to leave her because she had no children. In due time a baby was sought and it fell to Mrs. Haley's little one to play this character. It is charged that Muller, who was out of town, was telegraphed for and that he came post haste, to find his wife in bed and the littie one with her. Having learned these facts Mrs, Haley sought the Muller dom- cile aguin, and, finding Mr. Muller at home, told him of the story. Just as she finished Mrs. Muller came in and a scene ensued, Mrs, Haley being very roughly handled and ejected from the house. ‘They finally had her arrested as an insane person and she was committed to the insane asylum. But three days later the physician in attendance discharged her. She again sought her baby, but found that the Muilers had gone to Colorado. When they returned she again tried to find her child, only to learn that it was dead. She has put her case in the hands of Judge Cunningham, who says he will see her righted as far as the law can do it. The Mul- lers flatly deny Mrs, Haley's story. sisal Croie dre tha MARCUS MAYER’S BET.
