PREPARING FOR THE BRIDGE CELEBRATION—DIS- SATISFACTION WITH PUDLIC SCHOOL MANAGE- MENT—SUGGESTING A CHANGE OF TRUSTEE— THR JEFFERSON STRERT SEWER, ETC. Correspondence of THEEVEXING STAR. The Anacostia Citizens’ Association held a very animated meeting in the station houso last night, among those present being James Bar- ker, A. M. Green, W. Leo White, Arch Etzler, W. J. Latimer, Benj. Mundell, J. W. Bartley, W. Marden King, J. C. Lee, A. Davison, Hiram s, Dr. R.A. Pyles, Charles Barker, A. Mc- Lean, J. Adam Bele and others, The prinei- Pal business of the meeting was tho devising of ways and means for assisting in the Penn- sylvauia avenue bridge celebration Augget 25. Mr. White, from the East W aieey 4 joci= ation, explained the nature of the celebration and the progress that has been made in raising funds for the occasion. About €2.000 has already been contributed to provide a barbecue for the public and half as much more will be received vefore the books are closed. Messrs, Thomas Gray, H. A. Linger, H. A. Griswold and W. Lee White have been appointed by the East Washington Association to receive funds from our citizens and the local association ap- pointed acommittee of three, consisting of Dr. T. Torrey, Benj. Mundell and J, Adam Bede, to assist them in the canvass. A general com- mittee of five to confer with the East Washington Association, Icarn what position Anacostia would be given in the procession and aid in the general co-operative work of whooping up the celebration was also ap- pointed, being composed of Dr, R. A. Pyles, J. ©. Lee, J. W. Bartley, J. Adam Bede, and 8. M. Golden. As an evidence of good faith the association appropriated the balance of a few dollars in the treasury to the uid of the bridge celebration. ‘The association took hold of the celebration business in a vigorous way and save evidence that this suburb will eat barba- cue at the first table. ‘the speaking and feast ! of reason will be on the Washington side of the branch, but the flow of soul will be all over our uillsides, The boef will be ripe and juicy. SCHOOL MATTERS. Aftor the bridge business had been disposed of Anacostia school matters were ripped up the back with a buzz saw. It was claimed by Mr. Lee that this suburb is discriminated against by the school authorities; that the present trustee, Dr. Witmer of St. Elizabeth, now in Europe for the summer, has no personal inter- est in the schools; that the seventh and eighth grades, now taught in one room, are more than any teacher can do justice to; that music and drawing are neglected; that our building is inadequate, some teachers inefticient; that the District is educating children from Vir- ginia and Maryland, while our own abundant offxpring are crowded out or put on half rations; that this school district needs # super- Vising principal and would get one if our peo- ple lifted up their voices high enough; that at present many children are forced to go to Washington for intellectual fodder, and that our District school manageinent in general. and that of Anacostia in particular, needed to be curried down and dusted off. Mr. Hiram Pitts, who had been a pilgrim for over eighty years, thought the school question an important one to our c and the association should give it attention. He said the Commissioners a few years azo arrogated to themselves more power than properly belongs to them and narrowed down the authority of the trastees till the latter had become little more than the agents of the Com- missioners. In no other city, he said. were the school authorities so limited in their field of operations. The question of director géneralship will not come up, as the matter is entirely in the province of the executive committee, which has not yet been appointed, The main purpose of the conference ia to obtain authoritative opin- ions on what shall constitute the powers and limitations of the executive committee. T. W. Palmer, president of the commission, and J. T, Dickinson, secretary, will attend the confei ence. Gen. Goshorn «aid yesterday: “The Chicago exhibit will be mainly agricultural, and the foreign representation will not be extensive, ‘That is my opinion, based on the Paris expos tion, and the fact that foreign nations must ineur great expense to get to Chicago at all. Financially, 1 think the Chicago fair will bea success, No exposition since that of the cen- tennial has had equal pecuniary fruition, but Chicago may turn the line.” Marae All the members of the subcommission said that the present outlook for success was un- doubtediy favorable. The condition of the striking cloak makers in New York may be characterized as critical— on the verge of a riot, An outbreak of twenty striking cloak makers occurred last evening. The attack was made in tho apartments of Celia Bander, at No. 4 Allen street, They acted like mad men, A ery of police scattered the men and only one of the rioters was cap~ tured by the police. Two thousand police re- serves were massed at the various police stations ready to answer at an instant’s notice. Rioting was contemplated by the cloak makers, but Acting Superintendent Byrnes’ quick action cowed them. Since the riot of two weeks ago the acting superintendent has been keeping close watch on the cloak makers. His men have been at all their mectings, secret as well as public, and there they learned things which made a close watch upon their movements im- perative, Socialism and its ranker brother, anarchy, were being instilled into their breasts by flery and ignorant leaders like Baroudess, ‘There was a secret meeting Wednesday night, Just what transpired there Inspector Byrnes refused to tell, but it is known that the cloak makers, under Barondess’ fiery language, de- cided at a secret meeting to mass about the cloak factories and do bodily violence to all who applied for or attempted to return to work Superintendent Byrnes’ men were present # this meeting. The matter assumed such serious shape that they communicated at once with their chief. Ten minutes later the various precinct commanders received by _ general alarm a peremptory order to hold the off platoons in reserve from 6 o'clock until further notice. Acting Superintendent Byrnes was at his office in the central police building ata very early hour and receiving reports from all precincts, At 8:15 yesterday he considered the danger past, for the time being at least, and ordered the officers of platoons at the varions station houses toallowthe reserves to go lome. A number of manufacturers and contractors re- sumed work with non-anion men, among them Messrs. G, Schwab & Brothers of No. 4iGreeue strect. McDOWELL AG soe AIN REPUDIATED. It was explained that the ent appropriation biil, if ever passed, will us 4 night station’ keeper. and that a $25,000 additicn to our school building 1s also provided for. JACKSON STREET SEWER. The completion of the Jackson street sewer was urged, and W. Marden King was appointed to act with the standing committee on sewers, to see the Commissioners and pre tothem. The change of Commissioners since the work was begun has caused much delay, but it is thought they will order the sewer com. pleted at the earliest practicable time. On count of the dry weatuer no inconvenience has been experienced this season, but a heavy rain would flood several houses. The Fillmore and Pierce street approaches to the new Masonic Hall were reported in rough and unsightly con- dition, and the committee on streets, roads and bridges was instr to look after their im- provement, ‘Two new members—A. The hearing before the interstate commerce commission on the complaint of the Boston fruit dealers against the railroads running the “peach train” for alleged unjust rates and undue delays in the service was continued at Boston yesterda: Trainmaster Bradford Murphy of the Pniladeipbia, Wilmington and Baitimore railroad resumed his testimony concerning the means used to expedite the movement of peach trains over the road and its branches. He said trains were scheduled at twenty to twenty-five miles an hour, including ztops, and that they frequently ran forty-five miles an hour. Geo. W. Wait, trainmaster of the New York division of the Pennsylvania railroad, testified that specially assigned on- inc and crews were used in the peach trafic. Witness testified to the special facilities given Poston trafic and was cross-questioned 4s to whether similiar facilities were not usual for perishable freight by all roads, Mr. Macey, counsel for the Pennsylvania road, asked that a day might be given by the nission in Washington in order that he troduce evidence from peach growers y and Delaware as to the reasons for the diminution of the Boston peach trade, to rebut the imference that was due to high rates of freight. ‘The commission decided that the testimony might be taken in Washington, and if Boston counsel desired to present testi- mony in rebuttal one of the commission would come to Boston to take it, Assistant General Freight Agent Willcox of the-New Haven road testifiod that there was no agreement for a through rate on peaches, His road made a tariff in connection with the New England road from Jersey City to Boston of 100 per car, not to exceed a weight of 30,000 pounds, eee Sympathy for the Danish Seame A cablegram from London says: The National Seamen's Union, with a view to forcing the Eng- lish ship owners to influence the Danish ship owners, announces that a general strike of sea- mea will be inaugurated July 26, and that the men will not return to work until the demands of the Danish seamen for wages equal to those paid English seamen are conceded. Dean Wright of Boston delivered the initial lecture of his course in Bible readings. Ho objected to the exclusive use of the term “Saint” for evangelists, and stated that all Christians were saints in the early days and that the church canonized saints, but later the saints cannonaded the church. Miss Willard gave one of her talks on purity in literature and art, and Mrs, H. B. Kells spoke briefly on the value of the press in Woman's Christian ‘Temperance Union work.
