To the Editor of Tux Evemrwo Sap: The habit that has become so prevalent in the last few years of using an umbrella as a protec- tion against the heat of the sun is a very bad one and should be cried down. So far as the direct rays of the san are concerned the prac- tice is a success, but, on the other band, the in- direct rays, equally as scorching, that are re- ilected from the sidewalk to the umbrella, are all focussed on the head and shoulders of the holder, and as the surface of the umbrella is many times greater than the surface of the body that would otherwise be exposed directly to the sun, it follows that we but intensify the condition of things that we wish to lessen. Again, owing to the fanciful protection; the victims of the habit are tempted to the ordinary precautions agaiust hot weather. They move about just as usual when they should keep as quiet as ible, walk long dis- tances instead of riding in the cars, and in their travels are —— to disregard the substantial shade that the streets afford very generally to pedestrians, If umbrellas were made with the convexity downward or asthe sun umbrella of eastern countries with a flat surface, or even as the parasol of the ladies with a small surface and a very long handle, they would be practicable and a great comfort, Used as they are made at reseut, however, they add much to the ex- austive and debilitating effects of the warm weather, and are of no service unless perha to relieve the eye of the sun’s glare and to il- Justrate the power of the imagination. Barnwell county, 8.C., where eight colored men wefe lynched one night last December, is again the scene of a serious race trouble. A ‘telegram from Columbia, $.C., says: At last accounts two persons had been killed and one mortally wounded. The scene of the trouble is the village of Kearse, in the southern por- tion of Barnwell county. Early Tuesday morn- ing the quiet hamlet of Bamberg was startled by the sudden appearance of a dashing courier, his horse all covered with foam. Upon their return the white men remon- strated with them for taking the boat without ission, when one of the offenders, Pink ster, jr., became offensive. The fire was returned as Promptly as —- and two of the colored men wers slightly wounded, and the others could be heard scampering in every direction. Seeing that no arrests could be made the white men returned to their homes, Henry Kearse, one of the colored men and one of his associ- ates, returned totheir work and offered to suf- fer any punishment the whites might inflict, and begged to be let off witha horsewhipping.
