At the meeting last evening the reports of the various commit- tees im charge of the ceicbration showed that mn | the details were well in hand and thatthe 35th | of August next will be a red-letter day in the history of that section of the city. THE RRPORT FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTER, submitied by Mr. M. 1. Weller, was listened to with interest, as on that committee devolves the important duty of securing “the sinews of It had been docided that $3.000 would be needed to defray tho expenses of the cole- bration. Mr, Weller stated that tho work of raising this amount of money had been divided Up among the fifty members, who would call apon the various trades, professions and in- terests. There seemed to be no doubt that all the money needed would be contributed. The Washington Gas Light Company, he said, bad subscribed $100 and the Washington and George- town and the Metropolitan railroad companies, as well as other corporations, were expected to contribate generously. As the anniversary of the burning of the bridge falis on August 24, which ie Sunday, it was decided to hold the celebration on Monday the 25th, instead of on the preceding Saturday, as had first been sug- gested. This change wes favored by business men and others, CHARACTER OF THE PARADE. In reply toan inquiry from Mr. Babson in regard to the proposed character of the parade President Dawson said that no definite plans had as yet been decided upon. Mr, Hannan, the chairman of the committee on parade, said that the committee would be giad to receive suggestions which could be util- ized by the committce when it came to decide | ‘upon the character of the parade. In the opinion of Mr. Weller the parade ought tobe both military and industria! ii that the militia of the District were in! in this anniversary. Mr. Sperry, from the committce on music, ported that steps had beeu taken to secure the Marine Band and that vocal music would be had in abundance, the intervals between the speeches, regat barbecue and fireworks ex- bition to be filled im with patriotic songs by an immense choir. A meeting of the educational committee of northeast Washington was held last night at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 12th street be- tween D and E northeast, with RD. Ruffin chairman, and Rev. A. A. BOILING LAKES IN THE SIERRAS, One That Will Cook an Egg in Four Minutes and Covers Several Acres. From the Red Bluff People's Cause. About 100 miles north of Oroville, at the foot of old Lassen, there is a boiling lake covering several acres, The depth of the lake is un- known, but its entire surface constantly boils like a huge kettle. The degree of heat we do not know, but we were there about ten years ago and remember distinctly that it would scald the skin from the fingers in a very few seconds, Our party agreed that it would boil an ogg in four minutes, The smell of sulphur per- vaded the atmosphere about the lake, and around its borders something like sulphur ould be scraped up in handfuls. This lake is oar Hot Spring valley, at the base of Mount Lassen. Between it and the mountain there are perhaps @ thoussud boiling, bubbling. hot springs, and in tramping about these springs the ssles of person's shoes become uncomfort- ably warm. The North Feather river. at the base of Lassen, in its triekliug suows and springs, and in a clear, cold and beautifal stream but a few feet wide, flows through this community of hot springs. MAHONE AS LEE’S SUCCESSOR. Jubal Early and Maj. Lacey May Fight Over the Question. The quarrel between Maj. J. Lee had said in bis presence that, had it been necessary to choose asuccessor to himself, ho would have chosen Mahoue, Gen. Early took occasion to contradict this statement and it was reported that at a meeting of tho two at the Lee monn- ment unveiling Maj. He says: “The story that I resigned the chairmanship to make « canvass for Congress is without the slightest basis of truth. ly resignation was a matter of necessity, but for personal and not litical reasons I desire to say that I want reaftor no office appointment in the party or from the party, except a | place in the ranks,” The Huns Surrender, George Wakiro, Andrew Sanalonco, Antoni Liesmeaji, George Jossai, George C. Kraimock and Peter Zdancziwich, Hungarians, employed onthe Pennsylvania railroad near Downing- town, Pa., who refused to answer the questions of Census Enumerator Bowen, wore yesterday given s hearing before United States Commis- stoner Bell, The defendants pleaded ignorance of the law and expressed their willingness to ve all necessary information.
