HAMLIN AND OTHERS—THE CLOSING SCENE OF THE PUBLic SCHOOL YEAR, “Age Quod Agis." Do what you do—and do it weil, is the watchword and motto of the class of ‘%Mof the High School. It isa first-rate motto for a class and when in years to come the members of the class hold their annual re- unions it will probably be found that many of them have lived up to it ax successfully as hu- man nature will allow. At any rate, they have started ont in the right way; they have done what they have done aud they have done it well, and now, after three years of steady and satisfactory work at the High School, they held their commencement last night and are now members of the general community and not in the ranks of those who are preparing for life. Over the stage at Lincoln Hall last night was along floral scroll with the words of the class motto worked out vpon it in pale yellow flowe: while from it hung a huge star “with the cla: numerais—'9—in large figures, It is hardly necessary to say that the commencement was & success. It was more, When a class of 281 popular young people of the city appear in public to receive their diplomas that testify to their years of honest, faithful labor it is an eveng of considerable importance, and natur- ally attracts a good deal of attention, Such was the case last night. By 8 o'clock Lincoln Hall was packed from the footlights to the gallery, overy seat was taken, many were standing in all parts of the house, and it is more than likely that there were many who were unable to get within the doors at all, THE SCENE ON THE STAGE. The Marine Band was stationed down in front of the stage and from that vantage ground pleased the audience with a number of popular selections played as only the Marine Band ean, A little after 8 the curtain rose and exposed an interesting spectacle. Ranged in a semi-circle around the stage were eight tiers of seats and on these were seated the members of the grad- g class, the young women all clad in amty white gowns, while many of the young men wore the regulation cadet uniform, In front was a small reading desk and chairs for the speakers of the evening. Commissiouiers Hine and Robert, Dr. Mays. se H. ©. Spencer, Mr. Powell, supermtendent of public schools; Dr. Lane, principal of the High School, and Miss Lathe, vice principal, also were provided with seats of honor, THE EXERCISES, Rev. Dr. Shippen opened the exercises of the evening with an invocation, in which he re- turned thanks for the blessings of education and of free schools and for the faithfulaess of those interested in the instruction of the youth of the lund. Commissioner Douglass presided for the evening and followed with a pleasant little speech of welcome to the audi- ence.and of congratulation and good wishes for the pupils, ,In his remarks he referred at some length to the growth of the publis school sys- tem in the District and told what had been and what those interested in education here still — todo. aid a handsome tribute to the board of school trustees for, thelr eflct iency, and especi- ally to the enterprise and energy of Superin- tendent Powell. After each speaker had finished there was music, nnd then Commissioner Douglass would introduce the next speaker, THE VALEDICTORIAN. Mr. C.8. Albert. a member of the class, de- livered the valedictory, and he did it well, too, His oration wasa well thought out effort, not florid, and free from any signs of bombast. It was a clear, pleasant expression of pyoane undergraduate’s thoughts and impressions an deserved the enthusiastic applause it called forth. He was followed by Mr. Jno. W. Ross, resident of the board of schocl trustees, and | ion. W. C. P. Breckinridge. As each speaker finished one of the prettiest young women in | the class stepped forward and presented him | with a magnificent bunch of roses tied with long ribbons, a present from the class. Dr. 'f. 8. Hamlin made one of his charucteris- tie addresses to the graduating class, after which the diplomas were distributed to the graduates, A list of their names has already appeared in Tae Stan. The distribution of diplomas closed the evening's exercises, and the commencement. the culminating point of the students’ student ho ‘was over. BAYARD’S SILV eR V EWs. The Ex-Secretary_ “of State Predicts a Dire Calamity. Thomas F. Bayard, ex-Secretary of State. in a talk with a reporter at Baltimore yesterday, said that the people of his state were an honest, hard-working class, in whose good judgment and sound sense he had the utmost contidence and he did not think anything would stand in the way of continued democratic success in Delaware. He had not descended, he added, to factional politics and could give no informa- tion on that point. It is too early, he said, to discuss national politics with the view of naming candidates and the most important thing naturally today was the dire calamity with which the country was threatened by sad- dling it with a silver basis, as was indicated by the vote taken in the Senate Tuesday. ———#ee BAYSE VISITS P 'TSBURG. ‘| The Cougressman’s Object Supposed to * be the Helping of Col. Stone. Congreseman Thomas M. Bayne was in Pitts- burg yesterday. He hada chat with Col, Win. A. Stone, Heuith Officer Bradley and other Allegheny politicians, The general supposition was that Col. Bayne went ou from Washington to solidify his friends for Col. Stone, and the opposition was closely watching every movi ment. The colonel himself told a reporter that he was on private business, He repeated the statement that he was out of politics and positively declined to answer questions about the muddle in the twonty-third congressional district. Col. Bayne explained the Senate’ glass and metal schedule of the tai the fact thatthe Senators did arguments used before the republican members of the ways and means committee. Col. Bayne said the free silver coinage bill would have a hard time passing the House, and if it was passed it was plainly the President's duty to veto it. cut in the see Panzor Cans to Deer Park axp Oaxraxp,— | Commencing Saturday, June 21, the B, & 0. | BR.
