The Graduates of the Deaf Mute College Make a New Departure. CLASS DAY EXERCISES AT KENDALI. GREEN--SI- LENT ORATIONS AND POEMS—THE CEREMONY OF PLANTING AND CHRISTENING THE OAK—A BAN- QUET IX THE EVEN! Almost all colleges have class days, as they are called, days given up entirely to the stu- dents themselves. when, asa sort of relief to the general sedateness of commencement time, the student can amuse himself and his friends ‘The National Deaf Mute College has heretofore always managed to get along without a class day, but the class of "90, more progressive than any of its predecessors, decided they would plant a class tree, have a class history and prophecy and have as pleas- ant, if not as noisy a time, as the students in other colleges, where there are more of the five senses prevalent. sterday was the day appointed for this inovation into the college ceremonials and a lovelier day could not pos- sibly have been chosen, It was hot in the city, but out on the lawns and under the trees at Kendall Green everything was lovely, and the pretty girls in white looked aa cool as they did interested. EXERCISES IN THE CHAPEL. At3 o'clock, the hour set for commencing the exercises, there was quite a large crowd gathered in the chapel hall, and the greatest interest was evinced in everything the students =| did. In the center of the group sat Mr. Cadwallader Washburn, the president of the class, Mr. Washbarn, who is @ son of Senator Washburn of Minnesota. is an excep- tionally clever young man and his college course has been a most satisfactory one. THE GRADUATES, The graduating class was made up of the following members: Thomas Hagerty, Wis- consin; Frank A. Iitner, Maryland; Oscar H. Regensburg, Illinois; Stephen Shuey, Missouri; Hobart D. Towa; Cad. L. Washburn, Minnesota. and William H, Zorn, Ohio. And the committee of reception. who were responsi- ble for the well being of ali the guests, was composed of three ‘undergraduates, W. W. Beadell. W. D Himrod and F. G@ Wardemann. The exercises were begun by a prayer by ‘Thomas Hagerty. the class chaplain, and Cad, L. Washburn. master of ceremonies ax well as class president, made a pleasaut little address, tly of welcome and partly of explanation, ne Regensburg, class historian and prophet, told of the past and fature of his several ¢lassmates in witty stvie, for Prof. Chickering read aloud what Mr. Regensburg was saying in silence, and even the uninitiated could under- stand the point of his jokes aud the wit of his clever little sallies. The class poem, “The Lapse of Time,” was delivered by the poet, Mr. Stephen Shue: IT SEEMED PLEASANT. President Gallaudet followed in a pleasant littie speech to the class, It was pleasant in all probability, that is, for the class seemed to enjoy it immensely, and as for the outsiders they could only make wild guesses as to its import, for it was not interpreted for their benefit. A benediction by Kev. J. H. Cloud closed the exercises in the chapel. PLANTING THE TREE. The audience was requested to adjourn to the lawn, where a young oak tree had been planted. This had to be christened and given all sorts of sage advice. Cad. Washburn be- gan by mounting a platform beside the tree and making another short address. A poem iscribed to the tree was read by Stephen Shuey and Osear H. Regensburg rose to give the ‘Advice to the Tree.” That young oak will be crooked and gnarled, indeed, if it follows all the advice it received yesterday. One would think the advisory committee of one knew more about how an oak tree should grow than the oak does itself. But the audience was pleased and amused by the speech; so all went very well, indeed. CHRISTENING TRE OAK. ‘Then a small mite of humanity in white lace and a pretty blue sash was led up to the tree to christen it. The child was Master Burton Hotchkiss, a son of Prof. Hotchkiss and a great favorite with the class of 90. Burton poured some water upon the roots of the tree and cbristened it the “Porter Tree,” in honor of is ap Brightclearcomplexion Soft healthful skin. “ PEARS'—The Great English Complexion SOAP—Sold Everywhere: SUMMER RESORTS ANTIC CITY, N. 5. The average circulation of Tur Star for the first three months of 1890 was 33,236, this being more than trebie that of any other Wash- ington newspaper. 2 Tue Srax basa larger and fuller circula- tion in the city where printed, in proportion to reading and purchasing population, than any other newspaper in tke world. It is essentially ahome paper, the extent to which it is relied upon by members of the household, particu- larly by the purchasing portion of the commu- nity, being the marked characteristic of the Paper. to which no other daily journal now published can furnish a parallel, 8 The value of advertising is in direct pro- portion to the circulation of the paper, con- sidering the character of its readers. Weighed in this balance Tax Star is one of the cheap- est advertising mediums in the United States, and far cheaper than any other Washington paper. 4. BARR, at LIN. vars, 8: in tod pe Po ra ie Sas8 RP E i 000) = THE EVENING STAR is offered to the pubs lic, im good faith and with confidence, as THR BEST LOCAL ADVERTISING MEDIUM IN THE UNITED STATES. In point of fact, it may be truthfally said that it is without as equal in this respect any where im the world, These averments are borne out by the figures given below, which are compiled from the sworn weekly statements printed in the-paper on each Monday in the year, and condensed from the sworn tabular statements showing the average daily circulation of the paper during the year 1859, published in Tux Strap on the 18th of January, 18%, Briefly stated, the points upon which the above m is based are these: That— 1. The Star has three times the circu. lation of any other paper Washing- ton! 2. The Star's circulation in Washinge ton is double that of all the other daily Papers published in the city added tos gether!! 3. The Star has a larger amd fuller circulation in the city where printed, tm proportion to reading and purchas: ing poputation, than any other news: | Paper in the world!!! 4. The Star has the largest regular and permanent home circulation of Any two-cent afternoon paper in the United States !ttt In support of these claims and to show the Constantly increasing circulation of the papet, Attention is invited to the figures following: DAILY CIRCULATION mm ‘1885-86-87 -88-88, ISS3. 188s, 22,029 24,321 26,299 27,161 29,200 MAX...25,549 25,594 26,009 27,400 34,768 APK...22,972 24,927 25,575 27,166 29,852 May. .22,474 24,359 25,742 26,722 99,616 JUNK..21,933 23,902 25,116 27,453 30,173 SCLY..21,406 23,186 24,870 26,363 29,650 Av 45 22,364 24.559 23,521 25,595 Serr..21,033 22,302 24,905 25,324 28,478 Ocr...21,497 21,701 24,807 25,946 30,329 Nov...22,049 23,651 25,697 25.814 $1,053 Dxc...23,000 24,687 26,166 26,752 31,653 2 Av'ge.22,123 23,682 25,484 27,082 30,000 Increase ....... 1,359 1,803 1,598 3,008 Of this remarkable average aggregate of 80,090 copies circulated daily, no more tham 1,102 copies are sent out of the city by mail, and 1,106 go to suburban places, by express, railway trains, etc., leaving as a net circulation am the city proper the PHENOMENAL PRO- PORTION of 923; PER CENT, or AN AGGRE- GATE of 27,882 copies! Of this number, 21,142 were delivered daily by regular carriers at the homes of permanent sub scribers, . The remaining 6,740 copies represent the sales over the office counter, at the news stands, end by newsboys. But of this latter number a very large proportion is supplied reguiarly to per Mauent residents of the city living in iodgings, &c. (not householders), so that its whole circula thon ma; be literally said to be in the family circle, While ite aggregate circulation there fore gives Tue Stan & distinctive and enviable positon in modern journalism, the fullness of its home circulation, the extent to which it is relied upon by members of the household, and particularly by the pur- chasing portion of the community, are | the marked characteristics of the paper, to which no other daily Journal now published can furnish a parallel. This is no idle boast on the part of the paper, It is a well established fact, demonstrated to the full satisfaction of the sagacious and enter- prising bueiness men of Washington, who seek and know where to find THE LARGEST RET ‘S FROM THE MONEY PAID OUT FOR ADVERTISING. This is proven by the growth of Tur Stan's advertising patronage. Nothing can more surely illustrate the esteem in which any article is held by the public than a constantly increasing demand for it—day by day, week by week, month by month, and year by year,—in the face of ad- verse claims and pretentious competition. The figures following tell the story on this point: NUMBER OF NEW ADVERTISEMANTS YRINTED D2 1885-86-87 88a, TAN.....2,785 3,200 3,615 4,076 4,556 3,024 4,528 4,603 5,404 4,986 5,554 S171 6033 4,606 5,528 3.013 4,489 4,004 5,598 5412 6,559 scene ¢,lor 1888 is even more striking. ‘The average daily space filled by a@vertise: ments in 1888 was 25.10 columns, or 7779 columns for the year; whereas for the year 1889 the daily average was 29.75 columns, or 9223 columns im the aggregate, being a total gain over the pre- vious year of 1444 columns! And this, it mast be remembered, consisted exclusively of the ordinary everyday business advertising, nothing in the way of tax sales, poll lists, election returns, ‘etc., such as occasionally swell the business of Political organs, being included im its patrom age. In conclusion, it is only necessary to say that, fm proportion to the extent and high character Of its circulation, Tur Star's advertising rates take rank with the very lowest in the country, and to add, finally, that every statement hereia made can be abundantly verified THE CI CULATION OF THE PAPER 18 SWORN TO, ITS PRESS AND CIRCULATION ROOMS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND ITS BOOKS MAY BE INSPECTED BY ANY ONE HAVIN@ 4N INTEREST IN THE EXAMINATION
