He said that in other cities a de- termined war had been made upon the itin- erant or transitory merchants who come to town, open a rented store for afew days and do a thriving trade in socalled bankrupt sales and other rather doubtfal schemes. Others go from door to door with linen goods, rugs, clothing and other articles of merchandise which they sell for cash or on Mr. Saks said that in the installment plan. In Norfolk they are com- pelled to keep away, and in Wilmington, Del., a merchant is compelled to show proof that he intends to run a legitimate business for at least a year before he is allowed to open. In this city there is nothing done to keep away this undesirable class of business men, and Vash- ington is known among these people as THE ‘‘noss SUCKER cITY.” The clothing, shoe and jewolry businesses are the greatest sufferers, but at the meetin, last night it was the unanimous opinion of al the reliable salesmen present that all were suffere: and Mr. more or less. Mr. Saks said that he pransy had consulted with Commie- sioner Douglass and that he promised to lend his assistance to the legitimate trade. so He said that he had far as he was able. called w nm the various newspapets and that they had promised to keep out all advertise- ments of these ‘‘fake” merchants, and that in fact every one they had calied on had prom- ised to lend whatever aid they could furnish, 4 COMMITTER TO WAIT ON THE BOARD OF TRADE. Mr. Lansburgh suggested that the duty of attending to thi is matter with the Board of Trade, with the meeting and a motion was made that & committee representing three different lines of business be appointed to draw upa me- ibe signed by all the mer- morial which shoul might lie This idea took chants of the city and presented to the Board of Trade for their action. Mr. Sake appointed Mr. Woodward, Mr. Mockbee and burgh as such committee. After spending some time in an informal disctission of the state of affairs the meeting adjourned to await the action of the committee of three. Lans- —s.
