Representative McComas Likely to Suc- ceed Himself—Glen Falls Railroad. Correspondence of Tae EVENING Stan, Atle tle City, N.J., Rockvitte, Mp., June 1. Comes oe The jury summoned by Sheriff Fairall for the condemnation of lands on the route of the Glen Echo Electric Railroad, in this county, | met yesterday. The land in question, situated near the District line and the Conduit road, was the joint property of Louis E. and Mary Shoemaker. and held by separate titles. To Louis E. Shoemaker they awarded damages to the amount of $1,050 and to Mary Shoemaker $450. In the argument the railroad company was represented by Messrs. Barnard of Wash- ington, J. B. Hendersur and Edward C. Peter of this place, and the defendants by Messrs. Anderson and Bouic of the Rockville bar. This is the last case involving the right of way for the railroad thoughout this county, and it is now thought that the work will be pushed rap- | idiy to completion. The large pavilion and suinmer resort at the terminus of this road will | soon be ready for occupancy, and will be opened in a short time. Political affairs in this county are beginning to assume interest and the question of nomina- tions for Congress by both parties is bemg discussed. In point of f “ | may be truthfally said that it is without an | equal in this respect any where in the world, | These averments are borae out by the figures | given below, which are compiled from the sworn weekly statements printed in the paper j on each Monday in the year, and condensed | from the sworn tabular statements showing the | average daily circulation of the paper during | the year 1889, published iu Tur Stax ou the | 18th of January, 15%). Briefly stated, the points upon which the above claim is Sased are these: That— | 1. Whe Star has three dimes the ciren- | lation of any other paper in Washing- | cont 2 The Star's circulation in Washing= | ton is & that of all the other daily | Papers published in the city added to- | gether!! | 3% fhe star has = larger and taller he city where printed, in proportion to reading and purchas- ing popelation, than any other news- paper in the world!!! 4, The Star has the largest regular ome circulation of the cires and permanen Any two-cent afternoon paper t United States 111! In support of these claims and to show the constantly increas g circulation of the paper, attention is invited to the figures following: DAILY CIRCULATION Ty 1885-86-87-88-89, ISS3. ISSG. INS? Iss, Isse, 20,456 23.388 25,470 26,386 27,541 26,299 27,161 29,200 26,009 27,490 34,766 25,575 27,166 29,552 25,742 26,722 29,616 29,116 27,453 30,173 24,870 26,363 29,650 25,521 28,595 25,324 25,478 30,329 31,053, 31,633 21,7 23,651 24,687 g Ee &: 2: B arkable average aggregate of | 30,090 copies circulated daily, no more than | 1,102 copies are sent out of the city by mail, | and 1,106 go to suburban places, by express, | railway trains, etc., leaving as a net circulation mm the city proper the PHENOMENAL PRO- , or AN AGGRE- | GATE of 27,882 copies! Of this number, | 21,142 were delivered daily by regular | carriers at the homes of permanent sub- | scribers. The remaining 6,740 copies represent the sales over the oi ter, at the news stands, cud | by mewsboys. But of this latter number a very | large proportion is supplied reguiarly to per manent residents of the city living in lodgings, &c. (not househ»lders), so that its whole circula tion may be literally said to be in the family ggregate circulation there- fore gives Tur Stan a distinctive and enviable Posicion in modern journalism, the fullness of its home circulation, the extent to which it is relied upon by members of the household, and particularly by the pur-” chasing portion of the community, are the marked characteristics of the paper, to which no other daily journal now published can furnish a parallel. ‘This is no idle boast on the part of the paper. It is a well established fact, demonstrated to the fall satisfaction of the sagacious and enter- prising business men of Washington, who seek | and know where to find THE LARGEST RETURNS FROM THE MONEY PAID OUT FOR ADVERTISING. This is proven by the growth of Tur Stan's advertising patronage. Nothing can more eurely illustrate the esteem in which any article is held by the public than a constantly increasing demand for it—day by day, week by week, month by month, and yeer by year,—in the face of ad verse claims and pretentious competition, The figures following tell the story on this point: NUMBER OF NEW ADVERTISEMLNTS YRINTED Et 1885-86-87-88-8 1883. ISS6. ISS7. 1SSS, 1989. JAN....-2,785 3,200 3,615 4,076 4,556 2.824 3,064 3,547 3,924 4,528 Mak....3,19S 3,506 4,669 4,603 5,494 APRIL ..3,679 4,355 5,475 4,986 5,886 MaY....3,565 4,197 5,395 5,171 6,033 5,529 4,483 4,604 5,880 6,589 6,107 5.795 Tora 61,499 45,910 54,038 54,501 €5,523 But it is net alone in numbers that the great increase of advertising is shown. The larger space required for advertisements during the year 1889 as compared with thst occupied im 1888 is even more striking. The average daily space filled by advertise ments in 1888 was 25.10 columns, or 7779columns for the year; whereas for the year 1889 the daily average was 29.75 columns, or 9223 columns im the aggregate, being a total gain over the pre vious year of 1444columns! And this, it mast be remembered, consisted exclusively of the ordinary everyday business advertising, nothing in the way of tax sales, poll lists, election returns, etc., such as occasionally swell the business of @olitical organs, being included im its patrom age. In conclusion, it is only necessary to say that, fm proportion to the extent and high charactet Of its circulation, Tur Stan's advertising rater take rank with the very lowest in the country, and to add, finally, that every statement hereis made can be abundantly verified THE CIR CULATION OF THE PAPER IS SWORN TQ; ITS PRESS AND CIRCULATION ROOMS ARB OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND ITS BOOKS MAY BE INSPECTED BY ANY ONE HAVING XN DNTEREST IN THEIR EXAMINATION.
