Thomas of Virginia, who has been ili for some time past at his home at Fairfax Court House, had a very narrow escape from death Monday after- noon as a result of a mistake on the part of a nurse who was in attendance. Gov. Thomas is a well-known Virginian and his illness had oc- casioned considerable concern among his friends and acquaintances. His physician had preseribed a powder for him that was to be taken with a mixture which was in a bottle standiug by his bedside. Another bottle con- taining laudanum was with the other medicines, The nurse mistook the directions and under- stood that the powders were to be given with the laudanum. Four doses had been given the invalid when it was noticed that he was ina profound stupor. No at hand, but the members of his fumily at once went to work and administered emeties and did all else in their power to restore him to consciousness, Dr. Moncure was summoned as soon as possi- t noon, From then until 9 ening he worked faithfully nd had the satistaction of k to life. The board of condemnation 1s still at work and the title to ali the Jand has not yet been secured, Last week Mr. Frederick Law Olmstead, the landscape gardener, and Mr. Ralph Emerson, the architect, were in the city and looked over the jand in the park. All their work, however, was merely preliminary to anything definite, either in the way of plans or of actual work. CARDS OF INVITATION TO THE HANGING BENT OUT— THE ROPE TO BE TESTED TODAY WITH A SAND BAG—HAWKINS WILL PROBABLY MAKE NO SPEECH ON THE SCAFFOLD, Yesterday afternoon at the jail active prepar- ations were commenced about the scaffold for the execution of Benjamin Hawkins, the col- ored man convicted of wife murder, who is to be hanged tomorrow between 10 and 1 o'clock. During the day Rev. John Roberts spent con- siderable time with the prisoner in religious conversation, singing and praying. Hawkins was in excellent spirits and expressed himself ready to meet his fate. Warden Crocker was busy during the day looking over a heavy mail, much of it consisting of requests for passes. It is safe to say that if all the applicants were given passes there would be little room in the rotunda and corridor of the jail tomorrow for the officials, The law in regard to executions is tobe found in the consolidated statutes of the District, and is as follows: See. 1093. Persons adjudged to suffer death shall be executed within the walls of some prison in the District, or within a yard or in- closure adjoining such prison, and not else- where. Sec. 1094. It shall be the duty of the warden, or one of his deputies, with such officers of the prison, constables and other peace officers as the warden or deputy may deem necessary and proper, to attend at such execution. Sec. 1095. The warden, or his deputy, shall invite the District attorney, the counsel of the prisoner. two or more physicians and twelve respectable citizens to be present at every such execution, and, at the request of the person to be executed, shall also allow any of his near relatives aud auy ministers of the gospel, not more than three, to be present. Sec. 1096, No persons other than those men- tioned inthe two preceding sections, and no person whatever under the age of twenty-one years, shall be allowed to witness any such execution, TICKETS OF ADMISSION. ‘To prevent a crawd the warden permits ad- missions by ticket only. Those prepared for this occasion read as follow: Waaven’s Orrice, U.S. Jam, Wasuixoron, D.C, You are respectfully invited to be present to itness the execution of Benjamm Hawkins at this jail Thursday, May 29, 1290, between the hours of 10 o'clock a.m, and 1 o'clock p.m. Jonny 8. Crocken, Warden, The tickets were not issued until this atter- noon. THE SCAFFOLD. The scaffold to be used is that built for the hanging of James Peyton, colored, who was sentenced to be hanged on June 20, 1879, for the murder of Jacob Day, but whose sentence was commuted to imprisonment for life. His com- panion in the crime was convicted of man- slaughter and sentenced to the penitentiary for ten years, The first actual use of this scaffold was when James Madison Wyatt Stone, col- ored, convicted of wife murder, was decapitated by the rope cutting throngh’ the fleshy neck and ieaking the spinal column. This oc- curred April 2, 1880, and the crime was wife murder, on October 5, 1878. This execution took place ina yard inclosed by 18-foot boards in the northeast angle of the structure, for the to the place of execution within the jail |." and one had to be constructed. ‘The scaffold was then taken down and stored inside of the building, but was erected shortly after im the northeast corner of the north wing of the building, where it has since remained. It was next used November 19, 1880, in the execution of Joseph Neverson, alias Babe Bed- éord. and Edward Queenan, convicted, with Sandy Vinn (whose sentence was commuted), of the murder of Philip Hirth January 7, 1880, Other executions in which this scaffold was used were those of Charles J. Guiteau, for the assassination of President Garfield, on June 30, 1882; Charles Shaw. far the murder of his sister, January 19. 1883; John Langster, for killing Policeman Fowier, May 15, 1585; Louis Sommeriicld, for the murder of his and mother-in-law, and Richard Lee, for wife mur- der, April 30, 1846, and a month after, May 28, Antonio Nardello, for the murder of Carmine Rotunno, The last time the scaffold was brought inte play was on May 18 of last year, when Nelson Colbert was hanged for the murder of Philip Wenzell October 3, 1888, GETTING THE ROPE READY. Yesterday, after the prisoners had peen locked in their cells at 4 o'clock, the rope to be used, @ seventh-eighths-inch Manilla, stretched and rubbed down, was rigged on the scaffold and the hangman's knot was tied at one end. The noose was placed over the trap, the rope run through the center hole of the cross beam, thence» to the upright and the end made fast to the cleat at the side. This ix a preliminary matter, for today the rope will be taken down and allowance made by the slack for a fail of about five feet. That part near the noose will be well sonped. This afternoon another test will. bemade for strength by placing a bag of sand weighing from 40 to 50 per ceut more than the prisoner in the noose and letting it drop. This test is made as a matter of precau- tion. It has been stated that Hawkins desired to have ten minutes allowed him on the scaffold to address those present. It is thought now tht, yielding to the persuasion of friends, he will not attempt any address and that the pro- ceedings ou the scaffold will consist mezely of brief religions services. It is understood that Hawkins will be taken to the scaffold as near 12 o'clock as is possible. See Tug Scuepure of the steamers Chas, Macalester and W. W.
