The House committee on rules this morning decided to report 4 rule which, if adopted, will bring the tariff debate in the House to a con- clusion in afew days. At noon Wednesday next the committee of the whole is to rise and report the bill to the House and voting upon the measure and amendments made in com- mittee of the whole is to begin at once. The purpose of this somewhat unusual rule is to make sure that the enti bill shall be gone over in committee of the whole; that what is regarded by the majority of the members as a fair opportunity for amendments shall be afforded, and at the same meet the wish of the majority that the bill shall be sent over to the Seuate next week. A Police Officer Tells Some Tales on Congressmen in the Police Court. Policeman Ceinar ‘gave some evidence in the Police Court today that might have excited more interest than it did had the court per- mitted or required him to mention names, He was giving evidence in the case of Will Davis, a young man who was charged with being a vagrant, and the policeman, in the course of his testimony, remarked that a few nights ago he prevented a Congreseman, who was intoxicated, from being robbed in a dis- reputable locality. Continuing, the officer said: “There was an- other —— down there under the in- fluence of liquor and I cared for him also. He became indignant because I wanted to protect him against thieves, and he took my number to have me dismissed, The defendant in the case showed that he was employed at the Globe Theater and the case Was dismissed. ——-____ Official Visitors to West Point. time that the debate shall be rigidly limited to | wants free silver, Representative Mills wants free trade, and all Senators and Represente- bee rom hm ow In accordance with the the new summer styles, “Pull down your vest,” has been changed to | Pi “Pull down your vociferous.” The soap manufacturers are going to or- ganize a Bar Association. Cabinet officers get some queer letters at times, but it is to be doubted whether any one ever received an odder piece of correspondence than one which came to the Navy Department this morning addressed to Secretary Tracy. It was frou. & young woman living in a town in one of-the western states, She wrote ina crabbed, school-girl hand and had tied two bunches of worsteds to the paper, one of red, white and blue and the other of black and white. The letter was as follows: “Hon, Benjamin F, Tracy: “Dear Friend—In the first of my letter I On the 17th of Dec. I wrot a letter nt Harrison but I must say I did not et no answer to it nor what I asked from him ft was onlys banjo. And I told him that I would be expecting it in two* weeks. (The star is evidently inserted for the purpose of emphasis.] and I went three times and was disipointed so I got mad. my Px and an other man had abet made when I sent the letter my Papa bet ten Dollars that he would send the banjoand the other man bet twenty- five Dollars that he would only laugh at it and I guess he did so =e Papa lost his ten Do but if you be kind enough and please send me ene if you please and I would i very glad the man that my Papa had the bet with was a Dem- ocrat—me not I am only ten vearsold. Then fol- low the name and address, accompanied by the request “‘please excuse my writing” and the foll lowing postacrips in mingled red and black “Per! you will be President next I ‘amer was not good aenought for sppone but I hope you will not think so dond forget my banjo I will go to —— every sunday dond forget dont forget if you send it I ley ou will enter heaven.” retary has n not t had time to reply. THE BAKERY PROFITS. One of Them Says “That It is Absurd to Speak of Thirty-Three Per Cent. “I saw Hard Bake’s communication in Tae Sraz last night,” said prominent boss baker toaSran reporter this afternoon. “He is all at sea in his estimate of bakers’ profits if the price of flour does goup. He talks about 33 percent profit, He does not know what he is talking about, 'o begin with he speaks of bread being sold by the bosses at 5 cents. Not one loaf in ten is sold at 5 cents by the manufactures to the con- sumers direct. Mostof it goes through the hauds of middle men. With flour higher every baker in this town that sells bread at 31g cents per loaf to grocers would lose X cent on every loaf and at 4 cents a louf he makes all of a quarter of a cent, and this on ‘Hard Bake's’ own calculation, too. I fail to see where the sense of his talk about 33 per cent profit comes in. If journeymen insist on thir- teen hours’ pay for ten hours’ work and flour goes up a dollar barrel people should not be surprised if bread goes up a little too. But it has not gone up yet.
