4 THE EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON: THE EVENING STAR bas the fullest Local Circulation of any Newspape' World, and as an Advertising Medium ts worth more than all the other papers published in Washingto: When Washington stretches, as it will before many years, over tho whole District, and straight, level streets take the place of country roads winding up and down hills, and suburban trees and grass give way to rows of houses, the tountry will be pushed over the boundary line into Maryland, and Rock Creek from its en- trance into the District will flow through a city. The suburban beauty and the urban ugliness of this stream impress themselves now upon every observer. In the country its clear and refreshing waters wind through picturesque scenery. In the cit; the crystal brook becomes an open sewer, offensive and dangerous to health, which m st be covered some day at heavy expense in cesponse to an urgent public demand. The prop »sed Columbus park will, if established, prevent the city from stretching to the very bants of the creck, and will pre- serve the stream in its course through the county as a beautiful brook surrounded by picturesque scenery. If the park is not = established the hiils, trees, and grass will disappear as they are now doing before the suburban subdivider, platter, and builder, and the creek will gradually become polluted from surrounding settlement and be converted into the receptacle for refuse, for the casual dead animal and for sewerage. In the end its whole course through the District will necessarily be arched over at the cost of millions of dollars. The estimates made for hiding the ugliness of the part which, lying within settled limits, has already become an open sewer, indicate the enormous expendi- ture which will be required to cover the stream for its entire course through the District. Washington—the national capital of the future ag well as of the present—has to decide between preserving Rock Creek asa brook at the ex- pense of the cost of some of the rock, and hill and forest surrounding it, and permitting it to become an open sewer, to be covered in the near future at a vastly greater expense. — + The adoption by the national democratic convention of the platform of the Philadelphia democratic convention which nominated a suc- cessor to Samuel J. Randall might “reconcile” the “wings” and also carry out the Cleveland or majority ides of tariff reform. It is not a straddle so much as an abridgment which smoothes the edges of the taruff-for-revenue- only doctrine. ee ee It rains upon the just and the unjust in Mis- souri and in order to do it without partiality eyelone or a cloud burst carried away the roof of the capitol building at Jefferson city yes- terday. +. It will be well to disregard all flying rumors that “the leaders” are going to retrench here and hold up there, when the “here” and the “there” are such omnipotent factors in Con- gressional legislation as river and harbor and public’ building bills BEDE All the ladies recently elected to offices in Edgerton. Kansas, have taken a case of the pouts because the men criticized their oficial acts, and have resigned, So there. a stamina ote sees The olive branch hitherto waved over Mr. Huntington and Senator Stanford is now having the buds of peace knocked from it by Mr. Huntington's efforts to secure the United States senatorship for Stephen M.
