It was done by means of sharp hitting when that sort of work counted most and good, clean fielding all through the game on Washington's part. Phillips and Rid- dle and Doran and Hofford were the batteries, At first Phillips was a little wild, giving two men bases on balls in the first inning, but after that he was invincible and struck out man after man or made the visitors bit small balls to the infield or pop up flies for the ficlders, It seemed for sev- eral innings as though | Waehington were going to be puzzled altogether by the left-hand twirling of Doran, but at last his de- livery was solved and hit followed hit in such rapid succession that the spectators almost lost their breath by loud and constant yelling. The field play of the Senators was clean. Bader dropped a fly, for which he made a long run; Riddle threw a trifle high to third and Hill made a queer throw to second, these constitut- ing the only mispl: The visitors did near! as well, but most of their errors were mixed in with a large bunchof hits in the sixth, where the Senators won the game, HOW THE SCORE WAS MADE. New Haven made the spectators heart-sick by scoring three runs in the first inning on two bases on balls, Riddie’s error, safe hits by Schoenick, Brady and Dovie and a sacrifice. In the third the Senators pulled down the lead by making a run after two men were out. Phil. lps hitatwo bagger and scored on Bader's single, In the fourth the score was tied by more clean hitting. Jordan was tapped by a pitched ball and took first and Gleason smashed the sphere for three bases, and came all the way home on the poor handling it received. In this inning Doran struck out three men, The sixth was the Waterloo. By this time Washington had made a good guess as to the secret of Doran's success and he was no longer a terror, Jordan and Hill went to first on balls and Gleason was hit, the buses being thus filled, when Bird hit out a single, two men scoring. Two more came in when Jack Riddle found the ball for three bases, and the latter scored on Schoeneck’s error. Bader bunted safely and he and Phillips scored on a bad throw from short tohome. Then the big lead was increased by one more in the seventh, after two were out, when Hill went to his base on balls and scored on Bird's second safe single tocenter. New Haven reduced the difference between the clubs by scoring twice inthe eighth, which was the last inning. on safe hits by Pet- titt and Lalty, the latter a three-bagger, and Lanman’s sacrince. You have seen the duffer—a hulking big fel- low with @ bullet head and lots of wind and fat, but without an ounce of sand in“his craw. He always picke his man, and he always means to be certain that he has got hold of somebody who can be bluffed and bulldozed. There was a chap of just this sort—a duffer from Dufferville—in the crowd of passengers obliged to wait at the depot in Decatur, Ala., for several hours on account of a railroad ac- cident.
