THE EVENING sTAR: WASHINGTON. D.c.. SATURDAY, APRIL 12. 1 THE EVENING STAR. Wie LR 4 TUR April 12, 1990. -- Batter. Ss STAK bas the fullest Local Cireslaties of any Newspaper in the World, and ns an Advertising Medium is worth more than all the other papers published in Washingtos. Chicago's narrow-sighted jealousy prevailed over broader ideas with the Senate world’s fair committee. Senator Daniel's broad gauge amendment was so altered as hardly to be recognizable by the public which had so heartily applauded it upon its introduction in the Senate. A naval review, it is true, 1s pro- vided for iu New York harbor, the vessels pro- ceeding from their rendezvous in Hampton Boads. But no appropriation is made to carry cut this program, which is not to take place in 1892, the four-bundredth anniversary of the dis- covery of America, but in April, 1893, just pre- vious to the Chicago exposition. The city of Washington is honorably mentioned, the para- graph reading: “The President is further em- powered and directed to make arrangements for the unveiling of a statue of Christopher Colam- bus at Washington, with appropriate ceremonies and civie and military parade under his general direction after said naval review, and not less than five days before the opening of said ex- position, and to invite the attendance thereat of foreign representatives.” The republic asks for a grand, patriotic, timely display, the erection of a noble memorial of beauty and utility at the capital, the supplementing of the historical and scenic program in 92 by the material and physical attractions of "93, the whole to be a national, international, universal recognition of what Columbus did for civiliza- tion. The Senate committee grudgingly con- cedes the phantom of a naval review to be post- poned beyoud the year to be commemorated and cuts off Washington with brass buttons and a “statoo” already conceded by the Senate. Is there any seuse in Chicago's claim that com- memorative ceremonies in October, 1892, will interfere with her big fair in 18937 a Notwithstanding the short notice given of the opening of the Corcoran Art Gallery last night, the building was crowded with over two thousand orderly and intelligent spectators, ‘The result of this experiment demonstrates be- youd question that our public places of in- struction and amusement can be safely and ad- vantageously thrown open to the public in the evenings, and suggests the extension of similar privileges in the case of other popular institu- tions of the capital. There are thousands of intelligent and refined persons long resident here who have never had an opportunity to visit many of the city points of interest and in- struction. They have been too busy in the day- time, and these places bave been closed later iu the day, An appropriation for keeping open at night the National Museum, the Library of Congress, &c., should be made every year. ‘The cost would not be great. and the informa- tion and pleasure afforded would repay amply the expense incurred. This isa government of the people. by the people, for the people, as the people's great leader, Abraham Lincoln. said not very far from here on a memorable occasion.
