In the McCalla court of inquiry im New Yorlg yesterday Lawyer Menzies recalled Private Sanford, who testified that he had known ig Georgetown, D. C., one Johu FE. Proby, who wason the Enterprise under the name of Walker. He was the only Walker in the crew of the Enterprise. When Sanford first came on board he greeted the man as Proby and wae told that he must call him Walker now. Ia Georgetown Proby was fireman ona tug and was considered a very dangerous character when under the influence of liquor. Mr. Menzies then put in evidence authenti« cated records that throw a light on parts of the career of Proby alias Walker. The first was hi¢ conviction and incarceration in the District ree form school for incorrigibility at the age of sixe teen. The accusation was made by his father, After that he was arrested several times for ase sault and battery. He was also indicted for grand larceny and forfeited his bond by escape ing. His co-defendant was convicted. That was in 1886, aud was the last heard of Proby until he was recognized by his former acquaints ance on board the Enterprise under the pawe of Walker, Dr. C, G. Herndon testified that he was the surgeon during the cruise of the Enterprise, and that in all that time no man was injured, nor was his health or constitution impaired by his confinement in a straight jacket, Darling, who was ship's corporal while the Enterprise was at Cro stadt, testitied that after the first night there was no order depriving the meu of their hammocks and that they were not in irons after 1 o'clock. They all migh have got their hammocks had they wante: them, There was no case of men having beem kept in irons fifteen, twenty or thirty days. Lieut. Fickboum testified that there ba been no entries made in the log book of th confinement of men in straight jackets, in bunkers, and of other similar punishments, He had made a synopsis of the cruise of the terprise, which was placed in evidence, The log books were also put in evidence for reference. The conduct book was also put im evidence, and Mr. Menzies euumerated a num- ber of men to whose naines be wanted special attention given im the imspection of the cone duct book. The court announced that if any statemen® was to be made by the counsel for the defense it should be handed im writing to the court and not made public, All the testimony in the case was deciared to have been given. The cour® then announced that after a few preliminaries atthe afternoon session the remainder of the investigation would be made with closed doors, The Criminal Court records here show thas John Proby and John Weeks were arrested August 3, 1886, for larceny from the persom and that Proby was released August 16, Jerry Myers entering on his bond in $300; that they were indicted and on call for arraignment De- cember 4 Proby failed to respond and bi recognizance was forfeited. December 23 Weeks was tried and found guilty, and January 3, 1887, he was sententenced to the penitentiary for eighteen months, ace Proving Her Character. Mary Griffith, the colored servant girl whe was arrested afew days ago for robbing Mra, Adler, was given a hearing in the Police Court this morning. Judge Miller held that the evie dence against the woman was conclusive, note withstanding the girl's side of the case ag stated by the witnesses. Counsel then calle witnesses to prove Mary's good character, The first one called was an old colored who responded when “Uncie Jerry” was quested to step forward. “Do you know Mary?” he was asked. h, yes, sir,” was his reply. “I knowed hew wheu she lived in Prince George's county.” “Do you know what her reputation is?” “Yes, si “What is i “I know he’s honest. Why, judge, when lady wanted to employ her I recommended and told the lady I'd bet my life she woulda" steal.” “Then you've lost your life,” remarked Mr. Armes. “No I ain't,” the old man added, Mra. Adier then came to the rescue of girl and asked the judge not to fine her. Ii consideration of the request the court posed a fine of only $2 or five days in jail ary stepped back. > GEORGETOWN. A Loup Growr.—There isa general growl from residents here as to alleged neglect of interests of Georgetown by the District Com- missioners. There are several streets ig Georgetown which need improving and for which congressional appropr.ations have bee available since last July, aud yet no work been done upon them.
