They Purchase the First Baptist Church Property on 13th Street. Negotiations have been completed by the builders exchange for the purchase of the property on the east side of 18th street between G and H streets formerly occupied by the First Baptist church. The property was pur- chased a few weeks ago by Mr. Thomas J, King for #45,000 and he transferred it to the exchange for the same price. Mr. King is the secretary of the exchange and he purchased the property with the view of giving the ex- change an opportunity to buy it. The propo- sition was favorably acted upon and the money was raised by the issue of certificates of mem- bership purchased by the members of the cor- porate class in the exchange. The fund thus se- cured will be sufficient to pay for the prope! and also to carry out the (boned sh cai are contemplated to make the building suitable for the use of the exchange. He has been warned a number of times about the reckless manner in which he has been driving, but the words of warning were not heeded. This was why Po- liceman Redgrave arrested him yesterday and why he was fined $15 or 45 days on the farm by Judge Miller this morning. Cornelius Cusae, driver of one of Kingley Bros.’ milk wagons, was tried in the Police Court today for reckless driving. His wagon collided with a vehicle driven by a Miss Sam; son, The accident was Cusac's fault, and he was fined $5. ——a—— Marriage Licenses. G. Lee, C. P. Tarsney, 5. H. Lunt and Wm. F, Lambert as the ‘Morven Land and Improvement Company,” designed to establish villas, &c., on a tract of land in Alex- andria county. Decision Agarsst THE Water Compaxy.— Judge Keith has interpreted the charter of the Alexandria water company as to its power over the streets of Alexandria’ The a of way on the streets and power to open them for the purpose of laying down mains, &c., is granted to the water company by the act of the general assembly incorporating the company, and the president of the water company contended that this power was independent of any city ordi- nances relative to streets. Mayor Downham having requested = with sig laws and the request having been refused a fine of $20 was imposed and the matter was carried to Judge Keith, who sustained the mayor and holds that the power to use streets given in the water company’s charter must be held subordi- nate to the right of the city council to regulate and control the thoroughfares of the city. After hearing Private Wild's directtestimony yesterday in the Steele trial at Chicago the de- fense examined him and attempted to prove that he had frequently expressed the wish that he had killed Steele, In reply to » question as to the truth of this statement Wild replied: “I refuse to answer that question; it ain't got nothing to do with this case; I ain't on trial here.” He finally admitted that he had said that he would rather have killed Steele than to have struck him, “Because,” he said, “I could get justice in the United States court, but I can’t get no justice in a military court.” “Did you ever serve in_the United States army under the name of E. P. Ward?” asked the counsel for the defense, “I object,” said the judge advocate, ‘on the ground that this is irrelevant to this case.” The spectators indulged in applause at this Position taken by the judge advocate. After the attorneys argued the point the court re- tired to an ante room to consider the question. They returned after several minutes absence and sustained the objection. Lieut. Crowder then asked permission to bring into court one McComas, who had known Wild under the aliasof Ward. The court in retired to the counsel chamber and this time ruled in favor of the defendant. McComas was then called in, and in his pres- ence Wild was asked if McComas was not his (Wild’s) sergeant in the fifteenth infantry. The question was not auswered, as the judge advo- cate objected to the question and the objec- tion was sustained, Corporal Hiram Scott, who had charge of Wild after his arrest, testified that he took Wild back to Steele’s house to obtain the miss- cap. hat was the prisoner's demeanor at the time?” asked the judge advocate, “He appeared very angry.” The witness was then dismissed, but was called back by the judge advocate, who in- quired: “To whom did you refer when you said the prisoner appeared angry?” “I referred to Lieut, Steele. Wild seemed nervous, That was all I noticed.” The audience again took occasion to applaud, showing their sympathy with the private. The prosecution here rested the case andthe defense asked for more time in which to pre- pare for the presentation of their case. The court was accordingly adjourned until today. —— es —__—_ A GREAT SWAMP SOLD. The Okeefinokee of | Georgia Bought by a Northern Syndicate. The great Okeefinokee swamp property in south Georgia, heretofore owned by the state, was sold yesterday to a syndicate for 26}¢ cents peracre, Under an act providing for the sale purchasers must take the entire swamp, the acreage being determined by a survey to be made at once. It is estimated that there are 400,000 acres there. For years this property has brought no revenue to the state. Three or four times the state has given it away, once toa lottery and twice to private individuals, but each time it was refused, with thanks. ‘The syndicate that bought it is headed by Franklin Coxe of North Carolina and includes Gen. P. M. B. Young and Henry Jackson of Georgia, H. 8. There is a nice lot of Gordon setters and a big field of Chesapeake bay dogs. ‘The display of spaniels is small but select. The display of pugs is fairly good. The judges are Mr. James F. Pier- son, Chesapeakes; Hon, John 8, Wise of Vir- ginia, pointers; H. Malcolm of Baltimore, Gor- dou setters; Chas. D, Cugel of Baltimore, bull dogs; Jas, Mortimoer of New York, all other classes, Judging was begun promptly at 10 o'clock. The greatest interest was manifested in the Chesapeake bay and Gordon setter dogs, the former on account of the dog fanciers who have been looking forward to this show in order to get some idea of what a genuine Ches- apeake bay dog is, the latter because of the much agitated question of superiority between “Little Bay” and “Beaumont, Under the judgment of Mr. Malcom Little Bay beat Beau- mont. Handy in Philadelphia North American. A veteran newspaper man whose good work in days gone by gave him a place in the front rank of Washington correspondents now lies at the point of death in this city. When Andrew Johnson was President of the United States the dispatches of “Data” in the Philadelphia —_— and the Baltimore Sun, ‘‘Wallace” inthe Richmond Dis h, “Zeta” in the New Orleans Times, and “Dibon” in several other leading newspapers, were looked for with the utmost eagerness from day to day as conveying the Most trustworthy news as to the President's policy and the general course of politics from the Johnsonian point of view. ‘m. Wallace Warden was the correspondent writing under these several pen names, and his work yielded him perhaps the lurgest income ever enjoyed by a Washington correspondent. Warden came to Washington from Cimeinnati in 1862 as a cor- respondent of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Before that he had been adrug clerk, a lawyer, an editor, a publisher and » musical and dramatic eritic, He published the first literary maga- zine ever issued from a press west of the Alle- ghenies, It was called “Pen and Pencil” and among its contributors were N.
