Tre Staz has all along maintained that the chances of Washington emfjloying league base ball durmg the coming season are very, very small, When the ownor of the league rights at the capital is not ouly willing but anxious to sell out, and the controlling powers of the league are desirous of reducing the number of league clubs, it looks very mach as it arrangements might be made at the league meeting next month to satisfy both sides, In the meantime the report has started to the effect that the brotherhood people are makinz arrangements to locate a brotherhood club in this city. The most diligent inquiry fails to show anything more than a rumor floating around in base bali circles. Those who are best posted on base ball matters argue that it would be impracticable for the brotherhood to have five teams in the cast and three in the west, even if it were desirable to locate a club here, which might have been the case once but is not now. WHAT WILL BE DONE. Washington will have no league base ball and no brotherhood base bull, but it is very likely that an Atlantic association club will be loceted here, Nothing defiuite is announced yet, but steps are undoubtedly being taken by certain parties to establish a club here, and the preliminary move to lease Capitol park in all Likelihood gave rise to the rumor that the brotherhood boys are coming. NEW YORK AND THE BROTEERHOOD. The New York ciub scems determined to have some fun at the expense of the members of the brotherhood teams of that city and Brookiyn, even if theyeannot get them back into the fold and if it costs somethmg. Yosterday John Day had papers served on “Buck” Ewing, the great caieuer, to cite him to appear to give reasou why he should not be enjoined from pl ‘ing with any other club than the New York sae club, The suit was filed in the Umted ates circuit court. It is expected that other suits will soon be instituted, so that when the seasou opens nearly all of the New York and Brooklyn brotherhood men will be undcr suit papers if not actually under preliminary in- junctions. THE ABROAD. Last evening the members of the Veteran firemen’s association of the District visited Laltimore and presented to the Baltimore vet- erans a testimonial in the shape of a hand- somely engrossed and framed set of resolutions in recognition of the hospitalities extended by the Baitimore veteraus in September last. The Baitimore “vets,” marshaled by* John Ham- mond and headed by the American band, re- ceived the Washington association, marshaled by Mr. James H. Ragan, and ina blaze of light showed them into their headquarters on Cort land street, Here Mr. Ragan introduced Presi- dent Richards to President Holloway, and the latter briefly welcomed the Washington vets, ards made a happy response and in- Mr. John W. ‘Ihompson, who, after referring tothe fact that the Washington as- sociation had its origin in a visit of the Balti- more veterans to the capital in 1887, spoke of the pleasant relations existing between the or- ganizations and the handsome treatment they had received in September last and formall, presented the resolutions as expressive of their feelings. President Holloway received the gift, promising that it should be placed among their trophies, as a reminder of such was needed of the pleasant intercourse between the old voiunteer veterans. Ex-Muyor Latrobe gave some interesting reminiscences of the old time fire days, when he ran with the First Baltimore hose. The visitors were handsomely entertained at luneb, and songs and speeches and the performance of a seven-year-old drum- mer kept them till near 11 o'clock, when the start was made for home. THE COLUMBUS STATUE. The Bill Passed by the Senate Yester- CAPITOL GLEANINGS. Various Matters of Interest Being Con- sidered. . Mr. McKenna of Colorado reported favorably to the House yesterday from the census com- mittee the bill introduced by Mr. Morrill to provide for a complete enumeration of the Chinese population of this country. Mr. Me- Kenna states that the bill proposes to furn each Chinese person a certificate describing him and that any Chinese person found in the beautiful and glorious United States after the taking of the census without a certificate shali be returned to the place from whence he came. ‘The necessity for such identification of the Chinese person lawfully residing in the United States. says the report, arisex out of the fact that notwithstanding the iegislation that has been had for the purpose of excluding Chinese immigrants such continue to come into the United States clandestinely over the border from Canada and Mexico, and the immigration promises to continue uuless effective measures are taken to guard the frontier, or provision is made, as contemplated in the bill, for the identification of the Chinese people who are now here so as to distinguish those who shall hereafter unlawfully come into the United States, THE PATENT OFFICE. Patent Commissioner Mitchell in his talk to the patents committee of the House yesterday avout the inadequate accommodations of the United States patent office said that the office was so cramped that it was not only unable to dispatch business properly, but it was not able to to some of it atall. Mr. Mitchell also asked the committee to make some provision for in- creasing the salaries of patent examiners. He contended that so soon as an examiner became thoroughly proficient he was taken up by some rivate firm who could afford to pay hima Petter salary than the government did. Better salaries, he believed, would remedy this. THE COMPTON-MUDD CASE. The majority report of the committee on elections in the contested election case of Sid- ney E. Mudd, republican, against Barnes Compton, democrat, in the fifth Congressional district of Maryland, was made to the House yesterday by Mr. Cooper (Ind). Mr. Moore (Zex.) submitted the views of the demo- cratic members of the committee in a mi- nority report. Both the reports discuss the case at great length and each sustains the claims made by the party in whose favor each report is made. The majagity report declares Mudd entitied to Compton's seat by a plurality of 154 votes, The minority report disputes the clans of the majority and holus that Compton was properly elected. It concedes to Mudd a few votes claimed, but not counted for hun. WHAT THE COOPERS WANT. The door keepers were also required to move their chairs and their per- sous further away from the holy of holies, Up to the siay within six feet of the doors, but now they must move to 4 minimum distance of ten feet. The bill passed by the Senate yesterday for the erection of a statue of Christopher Colum- bus on the site now ocenpied by the naval monument was amended by Mr. Morrill. from the bill as originally introduced and printed in Tu Srax. The dirst bill appropriated only $50,000 for the entire monument, while the bill as passed makes the sum $75,000, Mr. Morrill, im a speech on the subject, said that the naval monument is to be removed at the request of Admiral Porter, who was instru- meutal with otker naval officers not only in paying for it but in having it placed there; but, on farther consideration, he deems that another site in the city would be more appropriate for the monument and when removed any statue that may be placed there will not occupy nearly as large acircle as is now occupied, and it will be an improvement to that part of | Pennsylvania avenue, giving more room for the passage of vehicles and for the street railroad tracks. jorrill referred to the statue of Lafay- S being constructed and remarked that it would be the best work of art in Washing- ton. The resolution as passed provides: That the Secretary of the Na the chairman of the joint committee on the library and the archi- tect of the Capitol be and aro hereby author- ized to contract foga statuo in bronze of Chris- topher Columbus, to be erected on the circle at the western entrance to the Capitol zround+ from Pennsylvania avenue, and for this pur- pose and for the entire expense of the founda- tion and pedestal of the monument the sum of 375,000, or so much thereof as may be needed, is hereby appropriated out of any moneys in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, Pro- vided, That the naval monument now standing upon the circle herein mentioned shali be removed and placed upon the triangular reser- vation bounded by Connecticut avenue, 20th eet and Q street. and any expense attending such removal shall be paid out of the sum herein appropriated. ——— STRAWBERRIES AND CUCUMBERS. Some of the berries come from the Boston hot houses and some from the south. The supply is more than equal to the demand, which brings the prices down. Last year at this time berries were bringing as high as $1 per box, but they are now sold for from 25 to 50 cents and the boxes are nearly full quarts. Fresh cucumbers are now on the stands in the Center market and are selling at 30 cents apiece. They are grown in the hot houses in Boston.
