In the Criminal Court, Chief Justice Bingham, this morning, the motion for a new trial in the case of Grace Ott and Richard Stanton, convicted of the larceny of over $500 from Marcellus West, was argued by Mr. Cahill, who appeared with Mr. Taylor, Mr, Cahill insisted that it would not be right that Grace Ott should bear the brunt while Mary Thomas went free. He said Grace's Parents would receive her and Mr. Taylor would, if she were free, send her home at once. He believed that she was worth saving and was much more to be commiserated than other par- ties in the case, The chief justice, after reviewing the testi- mony at some length, concluded that the ver- dict ot the jury was justified and the motion was overruled. The regularity with which tales of Siberian strocities have been doled out by the London Times ever since it became known that the ni- hilist leader, ““Stepniak,” was about to embark on a lecturing tour in this country is gradually giving rise bere to a certain amount of scepti- cism. The aim of the current stories to pile Pelion on Ossa in the way of horrors is too pal- pabie not to awaken an aversion on the part of cool-headed, common-sense Americans to give unquestioning credence to the alleged outrages. It is possible that there may be s certain smount of foundation for the grusome state- ments of the London Times. But it must be admitted that they reach that from o source not only interested but also tainted.
