Hannah Southworth and Rosa Lloyd were friends in their childhood, Their families were very intimate. Both families came north after the war. Mrs, Southworth’e friends and relatives all emphatically declare that they do not for a moment believe that Rosa Lloyd was moved by any evil design in introducing Han- nah to Pettus, They declare, however, that she knew Pettus’ character, and so did wrong in bringing about a friendship between bim anda good woman. Mr. Pettus was the pro- tege of Mr. Murrell, Mrs. Lioyd’s father. In admiration of Pettus’ ability Mr. Murrell, when he retired from the firm of Murrell, Pollard & Co., put Pettus in his place. He also advanced mney to Pettus and backed him in various ways, demanding, however, a strict accounting for all advances, After Mrs. Southworth had made her confes- vion to Mrs, Lloyd the latter is alleged to have written her the Yollowing letter, dated Brook- lym, January 25, 1880: “My dear Hannah! I sympathize fully with you and believe what you say about Stephen Pettus. I know you would not willingly have had anything to do with him, I know what a black-hearted scoundrel he is, for by his in- famous acts long years since he made me his victim. It is with shame I confess it, but I feel I must stand by you in this matter.” Edgar M. Johnson, of the firm of Hoadly, Landerback & Johnson, claims to have in bis possession an affidavit of Mr. Poilard, the part- ner of Pettus. in which he swears that he was present during an interview between Mrs. Southworth and Pettus in the latter's private office in this city, when the woman promised that if Pettus would settle $100 8 month upon her for life she would cease annoying him. ‘The affidavit further states that Pettus refused to do this, but offered to give her an allowance of $50, which Mrs. Southworth would not agree PETTUS LAID AT REST. POWDERLY’S NEW PARTY. Federation of Labor Societies Which He Thiuks May Control the Presidency. Mr. Powderly believes the Knights of Labor and the Farmers’ Alliance will join fortunes: “We are for the amalgamation, body and soul,’ said he in an interview in Philadelphia, “and I have good reasons to think the Alliance is very favorably disposed toward the scheme. On December 3 General Secretary Hayes and Mr. Wright of the executive board will meet a com- mittee from the Farmers’ Alliance at St. Louis and discuss the feasibility of the problem. The principles of the two organizations are identi- cal. Both the Farmers’ Alliance and the Knights are one politically. By an amalgama- tion or federation the Knights and the Farm- ers’ Alliance will have about three million votes. The officer# of the Knights of Labor will readily throw up their offices and be sub- sidiary workers in the amalgamation. No sensi- ble man can dis} the magnitude and im- portance of su ep. It might mean that the two organizations when combined will wield such a political power as to control the residential chair. There are in round num- rs 500,000 men in the ranks of the Knights of Labor, while the Farmers’ Alliance, ps oa oy merely in its infancy, bas over 2,000,000 mem- bers. I think that if an amalgamation is brought about the American Federation, with its balf million followers, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, with its many thou- sands, and other great labor bodies will want to be merged. It will probably mean the birth of @ new political party which will have sufficient strength to control the tariff and other legis- The board of directors of the Tennessee coal and iron company have elected Gen.
