FREDERICK CITY AND COUNTY. Deaf Mute Education—Teachers’ Insti- tute—Prize Fight—Social Notes. Correspondence of Tar EVENING STAR, Frepentck, Mp., November 20. The board of directors of the Maryland inst ‘ate for the deaf and dumb, located in this ¥. met yesterday, Mr. Enoch Pratt of Balti- more, president of the board, in the chair. The biennial report of the institution to be sub- mitted to the Maryland legislature at its next session was approved. It was announced to the board that a legacy of $2,600, left to the institution by Mrs. Beazley of Baltimore, had gone into effect. The board decided to set apart a portion of the fund for the establish- mentof a gymnasium. A committee was ap- pointed tosuperintend the equipment of the latter, and it was decided to name it in honor of Mrs. Beazley. The roll of pupils—both sexes—number upward of 100 and there is an efficient corps of teachers. Mr. Garrett Crampton of Washington, for- merly of this county. and Miss Sophie Clag- ett of the Maryland tract, were married yes- terday in St. Mark's P.E. church at Peterville, this county, Rev. Edward Wall officiating. The church was crowded with guests. A lively mill took place on the Harper's Ferry turnpike, near this city, at an early hour this morning between two amateur pugilists, Baker of Frederick and Hahn of Washington. ‘There were several rounds in which very little science was displayed and Baker was declared the best man. Hahn claims several fouls. Messrs. John C. Walter and Robert Biggs have been appointed by the court a committee of the person of Miss Harriett Morrison of Em- mittsburg, recently declared to be of unsound mind. They gave $20.000 bonds. There has been considerable excitement here this week over the Frederick post office. The announcement was made that a change is shortly to take place, and aspirants are flock- ing to Washington to look after their interests, A conference of the teachers and public school officials of Frederick and adjoining counties was commenced today in city hall | and will continue several days, Rev. Dr. E. R. Eschbach opened the session with prayer. Mr. 8. Dutrow, president of the school board, and Mr. Glenn A. Worthington delivered addresses, ‘The following questions were discussed: County institutes and district associations, course of instru: :tion, and normal instructign. Dr. L. T. Mr. Morse’s Alleged Scheme for Secur- ing Desired Places on Committces. From the Kansas City Times. Mr. Reed and Mr. McKinley met accidentally Somewhere and commenced bantering each other in an apparently friendly way concern- ing their chances for the speakership. Maj. McKinley remarked, among other things, to Mr. Reed that he could not carry the entire delegation trom his own section, which asser- tion Mr. Reed vigorously denied, “Why,” said Mr. McKinley, “I know of a member from Massachusetts who will support me for the speakership.” ‘Name him,” demanded Mr. Reed. “Certainly,” replied Mr. McKinley. “M Morse will vote for me,” referring to “Rising ‘Sun Morse,” recently elected from the second Massachusetts district. “I guess not.” retorted big Tom Reed, who, running his hand down into @ capacious ‘inner pocket. drew out a letter from Mr. Morse which read about as follows: “Dear Mr. Rexp: I am happy to inform you that you are my choice for the speakership Ishall cast my first vote for you, and in th connection Iassume that you will be glad to know the committees on which I desire to serve.” To this was appended a list of important committees on which the member wished to be “What do you say to that, McKinley?” ejacu- lated the M Asnpercilious and significant smile was ob- served at this juncture to irradiate the Napo- leonic features of the Ohio champion of a high chest, Maj. Hence on the second and succeeding ballots I shall vote for e statesman. Throwing back his manly inley dipped down into his side Tassume that you will be glad to know the committees on which I desire to serve.” Here followed an exact reproduction of the list of committees indicated by Mr. Morse in his letter to Mr. Reed. “Well, I swow!” exclaimed Tom Reed in good old-fashioned down east dialect. ‘The joke was too good to be lost on either, so the two rivals shook hands over the episode. Each one carefully folded his letter, reinserted it in the envelope and put it away carefully for future reference, ~ 800 STANLEY AND EM! They Reach Mpwapwa After Many “SAFER, Hardships. Capt.
