This change of tone suggests that the big city has lost heart and grip in the struggle. Harmonious support of the place to be finally selected seems to decrease in importance to the New York eye in proportion to the increase of probability that some other place than New York will be chosen. Now this is all wrong, men of Gotham, and you know it. Note and imitate the cheerful, hopeful, good-tempered, considerate tactics of Washington, which ex- pects to receive the second votes of everybody. It is @ mistake to suppose that the capital will rejoice at these indications of total collapse in the New York boom. Washington is exteremely desirous that the metropolis shall fight ener- getic Chicago to a standstill. in order that both may turn in the end spontancously and heartily to the support of the national capital, the only site. Iwo of the subordinates in corrupt political work have publicly confessed their misdeeds, and to overcome these confes- sions the police records of the men are printed to show that they have committed other crimes. ‘While the specitic accusations of these men might need and fail to receive corroboration in an attempt in court to punish the persons im- plicated by them. it is evident that they are fully informed in respect to ali the kinds of dirty work which have disgraced Baltimore polit es, and the citizens ouzut to be abie to make good use of the hints derived from their confes- sions, in putting a stop to similar operations in the future. — + ‘The modus vivendi and the obnoxious green stamp will give up the ghost about the same date. N a The verbal critics bave each other by the ears now over the question whether we should say, “my linen is laundried” or “my linen is laundered,” when we wish to express the idea that our clothing has been put through a laun- dry. Sumebody suggests a vay out of the dif- ficulty by saying “my linen is washed;” but this would be by no means a universal equivalent. sss nestishso insist The talk is now that those hostile Senators would let Murat Halstead go to Russia if he wanted to. The cab system of the metropolis, as it is at present, is about as striking an example of an uncivil serv- ice as can be found in a day's search anywhere, —___ Edward A ‘Atkinson took a practical way, at the health meeting in Brooklyn, of making his hearers appreciate his remarks about the ex- cellence of petroleum asa fuel by using it to cook a dinner which was served hot to all who would partake. it the lecturers who talk to the poor about food waste through bad cook- ing would only take pattern by him what a lot of solid comfortas wellas instruction they might dispense.
