As stated above this is the first drawing un- der the new law which provides for the grand jury during a term and limits the petit jurors service to thirty days, and the character of those drawn would indicate that the Com- missioners have exercised much care in the se- lection of names, Heretofore when jurors were summoned for a term it was often the case that one-third of the entire number would ask to be excused. It is, however, thought that with the reduced term of the petit jurors there will be but few excuses offered, THE TEMPLAR CONCLAVE. ‘Wheelmen to Parade in Honor of the Kuights—The Railroad Companies. Among the attractions of conclave week will be a lantern parade of wheelmen on the night of Tuesday, October 8 Chairman Parker of the triennial committee said today that the wheelmen who had conferred with the com- mittee showed much interest in the matter, and it was expected that fully 1,000 men would turn out with bicycles. They will have Chinese lanterns and other means of illumination which will make a novel and brilliant display, The thousand wheelmen, Mr. Parker said. would make a line extending on Pennsylvania ave- nue from the Capitol to the Treasury. Arrangements were completed yesterday for the barbecue to take place Thursday afternoon, October 10, at 2 o yolock at the Sehaninen park. It is expected to feed 15,000 or more guests at this feast. Members of Washington commandery met last night in conference with ladies interested in the conclave. Committees were sppointed of ladies to look after lady guests of the com- mandery, and rooms in the Scottish rite sanctuary were assigned to the use of the ladies, THE RAILROADS. “I see,” remarked Chairman Parker today, “that Mr, Percy Smith, the passenger agent here of the Baltimore and Ohio road, is quoted as saying that the indications are that his road will be taxed to a greater extent than ever be- fore to accommodate the crowds co! to at- tend the conclave and that ahead contracts have been made for 120 sleeping coaches or some number like that. Yet that road, despite the great business it will do as @ consequence of the gathering here has refused to make any contribution to the fund for entertaining the visitors to the city. It offered to pay us for an advertisement $250 for what would cost us $225, and that is all. Representatives of our committee have had several interviews with the officials of the Pennsylvania ruad who, so far, have declined to give one cent. The same as true of the Chesapeake and Ohio road, which claims to have no terminal in Washington, though this is practically a terminal of that road through the Piedmont Air Line. The Piedmont air line and the Atlantic coast line have the matter under on and also the Pullman company in Chic I re- gard the action of the trunk line roa ie i into Washington as simply Cheep, eo and in- decent. The roads leading into Chicago gave, when the conclave was held there in 1880, $1,000 apiece. The Washington and George- wn railroad company has given us $500, and yet a great trank ing like ‘the Pennsylvania railroad, which will bring probably one hun- dred thousand people here has so far declined to give one cent. Railroad men say themselves that they expect to do more business then than they ever did. The citizens of Washington are willing to contribute, and have been especially so since they have begun to appreciate how eat an event this gathering is going to be. he hotels, which, like the railroads, will profit b: ry the gathering here, have not con- tributed as liberally as reer should have done.
