Elliot's monthly report of operations in the work of increasing the water supply of the ni | City states that but $40 was expended on the old project and $35,198.76 on the new one, which consists in the laying of the water main from the distributing reservoir into the city. During the month 1,254.89 tons of 48-inch pipe, 169.25 tons of 30-inch pipe, 77.95 tons of special castings and 37 valves were received, besides 4,120 pounds of jute and 65.378 pounds of lead. Truesdell, repre- sented that the county had never received im- provements in proportion to the amount of the taxes contributed by it; that the discrepancy was at least one million doliars in favor of the county; that about sixty-six cont of the county revenues since 1874 had gone to pay the sinking fund and interest or the funded indebtedness of the District in- curred under contracts with the board of pub- lic works, while the amount of that indebtea- ness expended in the county was pow preer 4 ficant; that of the $30,000,000 ex by that board only about $500,000 was ex- pended in the county, and that on the 7th-strect road, 14th-street road and the canal road, and afew other roads which are main arteries of travel between the states of Maryland — Virginia and the cities of Wash- ington and Georgetown, and contribute little to the advantage of the county, radar which they pass. Inthe case of the canal road the law provided that it should be an ex- clusive charge on Georgetown, to whose pros- perity it was exclusively intended and con- tributed. Col. Truesdell called attention to the necessity of legislation for the extension of streets into the county. GAMBLING IN THE COUNTY.
