New Nattomar rip Ena regular season inaugurated last ~ by Mr, Ezra Kendall t ri “A Pair of Kids.” Kendall is a comedian of ability. He has a keen sense of the foronmized any. ble facial expression and an unctuous humor which is very pleasing. The play was written for him and to display his Mod talents. In- cidentally, however, other c! ters are in- troduced, and there is a (good deal of sin; and — The was good ani was some of the singing, but the company jenerally is mot as good as Mr. nen ‘tyear. ‘‘A Pair of Kids” may be seen every ree end at matmees tomorrow and Satur- Hamme Buov Tueatec.—This theater also opened its doors for the regular fall season last night, and an ese which filled every seat and overflo e lobby witnessed the performance of Dion Bouccicault'’s melodra- Matic spectacle, “After Dark.” The greatest interest was manifested in the acts of several specialist, chief among whom was Bobby Gay- lor, who was recalled again and again. THE MYSTERY OF THE SEWER EXPLOSION on C street is still being looking into, but as yet there bas been no solution of the ‘problem. Superintendent of Sewers McComb bas had » force ot men at work ever —— the explosion, but their efforts to find the cause have been fruitless. Capt, Lusk is giving the matter much attention, During the past year several explosions have taken p mt the cause has al been discovered, The sewer depart- ment hus dubbed this sewer the “devil's hole.” FREDERICK ROSE WANTS DAMAGES. The Commissioners have received from the attorneys for Frederick Rose a letter claiming damages to the latter's property caused by the laying out and construction of 4th street east extended, The attorneys claim that when e man came around for signatures donating the land their client was away, and that aftere failure to get his (Rose's) wife to sign an old soldier was paid to affix the name of their client, Damages are asked and the Commis- sioners are requested to look into the matter, THE NIGHT LODGING URE. A. S. Solomons, president of the night lodg- ing house association, has made his annual re- port to the Commissioners, stating that during the past fiscal year 2.901 lodgers were provided with beds and 5,941 meals were furnished. The Commissioners are asked to increase the allow- ance from the poor fund to $600. NOISELESS STREET RAILROAD CROSSINGS WANTED. The Commissioners have been in receipt of many complaints from people living near the | junctions of the railroad trucks at the different crossings in the city on account of the noise. Today aay Metropolitan and Belt Line railroads were requested to put in new crossings and remedy the difficulty. => SOME ONE WILL BE PUNISHED. What Commissioner Douglass Says About the > Priller Affair. Superintendent Stoutenburgh was at the Dis- trict building early this morning waiting for the Commissioners. He had seen in yesterday's Stak the report of Watchman McEntee and wanted to make an explanation to the Commis- sioners, He told them that he might have been mistaken in his report in reference to the disappearance of Henry Priller from the alms house, whose body was afterward found in a marsh, and, as he (Stoutenburgh) would sooner cut off his right hand than do any one under him an injury, he was willing to bear his share of the blame in allowing Priller to get away. The Commissioners said that they would look into the matter. It is thought that should the superintendent be found to have been respon- sible for the escape of Priller he will bese. re- moved. an conversation with Commissioner Douglass m the subject he said to a Stan reporter: “There is no doubt but that somebody down there was derelict in his duty, and, while 1 can't say just what will be the outcome, I can assure you that the matter will be — investi- gated and the guilty one punished.’ we i ss A Mechanic’s Lien Case. In the case of Ephraim Nash against Mary E. Neale to have property sold to satisfy a mechanic's lien the latter today, by Campbell Carrington, fled her answer, She denies that the plaintiff executed the contract; asserts that what little material was furnished was old and unfit for use; that he never puta roof on the house; and she denies that he is entitled to com- meation, and qugicd aap she is entitled to 8 because he left her property exposed, of it was condemned by the building inspector; that the result was the sickness of her children and death of her mother, and the reason she has not sued him is his financial irresponsibility. She states that he sued her May i 1888, for $100, claiming that be bad put the roof on the house, and the case was argued and tho justice commenced to give his decision, which was plainly adverse to tiff. when he said he would take a non-suit, and awe afterward he filed a mechanic's lien against her premises, 415 5th street southeast, a St. Rose’s Industrial School for Girls. The District Commissioners have received from Sister Clara, the treasurer of Saint Rose's industrial school, on G street between 20th and 2ist streets, the annusl report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1889. The object of this HIPPOLYTE’S TRIUMPH. The Northern Troops Occupy Port au Prince and and Maintain Good Order. Correspondence of the New York Heraid. Post av Pamor, Harri,Ang. 23, 1889.—Within ® mile of the Portail San Joseph, where the Pont Rouge crosses a mountain stream, I ss today the surrender of Port au Prince. The diplomatic corps, the municipality and the gen- eral charged with the command of the city ‘wore witnesses and actors in the drama, All was done in the most quiet and dignified way, and facile princeps in the whole affair was Mr. Thompson, the United States minister. When we arrived at the barrier where the guns of the fortcommsand the cul de sac we were stopped by the demolition of « barricade which had been erected for the defense of the city, Butas the work, after the Hsytian man- ner, went slowly the escort passed through the narrow opening and those in carriages Cis- mounted and proceeded on foot. I was fortu- pate enough to be at the head of the bunt, and so when we halted in the midst of the advance of the northern army I heard the formal sur- render made to Gen, Mompoint, Hippolyte's minister of war. The proceeding did not take ten minutes then, with the worn Ped drums and fanfarons of gag division of occupation took up ite BIPPOLYTE OCCUPIES TEE CITY. At the bead rode the American minister and 8n escort of southern officers, but in the very fore front was borne—and curiously enough the only unfurled standard in the procession—the American flag. Next came the officers of the municipality and the military staff, then the troops, with Gen. Giles at the head. | It was » genuine triumph for Admiral Gherardi and Mr. Thompson, and of all the congratulations and good wishes expressed by Gen. Mompoint none Was so cordial as that for the part the Ameri- can navy had taken, The line of march was by the market place, then to the arrondissement, past the United States legation and #0 to the palace. By 10 o'clock the strategic points were all occupied by the northern army and ite act- = — was Jnataliod in the > After a lew preliminaries and pourpariers win hillward to teosive Aleut Nord, who came in with his division from Petronville, GOOD ORDER PRESERVED. The order preserved was admirable, and whatever hostile critics may say, take my word for it nothing could have been better than the behavior of the northern forces. At lo’clock Gen. Simon marched in by the Leo- zane road avd occupied the southern littoral; and es I write this iu a town as quiet ass Yan- kee village on Sunday, 9,000 soldiers have taken possession of the city of Port au Prince and all ite defenses without a gunshot. As the mail leaves ins half hour there is no time now so tell the whole story of the last ten days. On the 20th, after the capture of La Coupe by Alexis Nord, Legitime sent for the diplomatic corps and by their advice the Amer- 7 minister end the ih consul were rged with mission to Hippolyte which eathorioed almost absolute surrender, The terms were grey on the 20th, and in the afternoon of the 22d determined to embark. There was a stormy meeting of the diplo- Matic and consular corps at the might heve come to nothing had not Admiral Gherardi insisted upon definite action. This was followed by an adjournment to the French legation, and while the terms were being dis- cussed the news came that Legitime was on his way tothe wharf, HOW LEGITIME DEPARTED. In five minutes bis carriage was at the French legation, surrounded by a howling mob. It took less than # minute to break up the con- ference, for the French minister and Admiral Gherardi and bis aids marched out, made their | way through the crowd, and taking possession ot Legitime’ s carriage and one whieh followed it, escorted—in the face, in the very teeth of what we med a desperate set of furies—the de- posed president to the landing. As the car- Fiages swepi down the concourse swelled, and when they reached the landing the road’ was almost impassable, But the French steam launch was reached st last, and protected by the foreiguers Legitime went off to the Ker- guclen, It seemed touch and go for a moment which the mob would turn, but as time got clear a great cheer went up for him, a terrific fusillade of musketry rent the air, and then followed such « scene of bowling =" weeping as it has never been my lot before to wituess, Legitime still stays in the harbor on board the Kerguelen, aud the guns of the men of war command the town, in very fore part being the good = —— ‘ge. The rgromag od bow 80 peaceal at I can venture upon pre- diction that the war is virtually ended. ————cee_______ They Want a White Postmaster.
