IVES’ CROOKED CARELR. His Clerk Turns State's Evidence—Ed: Woodrufl’s Startling Story. A New York special to the Philadelphia In- quirer says: The first authentic history of the extraordinary career of Henry 8 Ives and bis associate, George H. Staynor, is presented herewith. It is the confession of Edward W. Woodruff, Ives’ confidential clerk and bosom friend, who is jointly indicted with bis em- ployer for the commission of a series of most remarkable crimes. Woodruff tells the inside history of all that occurred in the little back room at 25 Nassau street, where a beardless boy sat playing at finance, wrecked rich corpora- tions aud vast railroad enterprises ase child might break » costly toy. The veil of mystery which this young man sought to throw about all his movements is for the first time torn aside. Ives will be tried be- fore Recorder Smythe next Monday and Wood- ruff, whose story is told below, will be one of the many wituesses who will testi(y against him. It is no small punishment to the man who failed for $20,000,000 to find in the chief wit- nesses for the prosecution the clerk whom he always sneered at asa fool. Woodraf's sworn statement is as follows: WOODRUFF'S CONFESSION. “I know the defendants, Ives and Staynor. T have known Ives ever since 1881. He was at that time a clerk in the office of Duchey & Co., an advertising house at Park place and Church street. Lu October, 1583. while 1 was employed in Newark. At the time I was with Ives he told me that | be had about $10,000 of his own which he had made while with Wing, and expected Charles F+ Opdyke & Co., now with Brestow Pest & Opdyke, to give him £10,000 more as bis share Of the proceeds of @ joint account transaction he bad be in with him. This firm was com- | posed of Thomas B. and William B. Meeker. | After Ives was with them in this way for a few | days he convinced the Meekers, who were young men with money left them by their father, what a big concern they could make if they would form firms in conjunction with him. | He had long been desirous of connecting himself with « firm which had a membership | upon the stock exchange, and both the Meekers | were members of that body, A firm was sc- cordingly formed, composed of the two Meekers, and itis under the firm name of Meeker, Ives &Co. They speculated im Lackawensa, Ore- gon and Transcontinental, and they lost in that Way =7,000 or $8.00. This led to « disagree- ment, and frequent personal quarrels between Ives and the other members of the firm. Ives got out of the firm of Meeker, Ives & Ce., about July or August, 134. The high rote of interest which be would re- ceive in the west. In some manner Ives raised $4,000 on a lot of these bonds, of which amount be would have the use of for some time. | Through a Newark friend he induced several | stock brokers to for bis account $10,000 worth of Mutual Union on « margin of from 2to | 10 per cent.
