THE MAN WHO PLIED THE RATORET GATS EB THOUGHT HIS WIFE WAS SHOT—A SINGULAR AFFRAY GROWING OUT OF BAD FEELING BE- TWEEN TWO NEIGHBORS. The little village of Terra Cotta, on the Met- ropolitan branch of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, was the scene of s murderous assault about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The as- sault, which it is thought is likely to prove fatal, ocourred in the village within a short dis- tance of the house of the alleged assailant and his victim and was the result of an ill feeling betweea the families of the two men. The man who was assaulted was George Oswald and his alleged assailant was Michael Cleffey. They are about thirty years old. The men occupy houses near each other on Mr. John Lynch's property, near the terra cotta works. TWO PISTOL sHOTs fired by Oswald led to the diffealty. Oswald was on his own premises when he fired the shots and Oleffey was in his woodshed splitting kindling wood for this morning. When Oswaid fired Cleffey started toward him with the hatchet in his hand. Oswald ran, but Oleffey a Moca od up to him and dealt the r 4 STUNXING BLOW on the back of the head with the hatchet he had used in splitting wood. Oswald fell to the ground with a cry of pain and Cleffey turned and went back home, where he finished —— se a picts jswald was able to get up without assistance and return to his house His condition was such that it was feared he would die and Dr. Darling was sent for. Later in the day Police- men Morgan and Markwood visited Terra Cotta and made an investigation of the case. The information they received was that the man’s skull was fractured and that his death would probably result from the injury. CLEFFEY ARRESTED, The officers found Cleffey at his home and they placed him under arrest. He did not deny the charge, but was inclined as baliate | that he was justified in what he did) Wh questioned by a Star reporter the prisoner said that Oswald was @ quarrelsome man and was always interfering with his family. Yes- terday afternoon he said he was splitting wood, when his wife passed through the shed and started toward the house. He heard the re- port of two pistol shots. His wife threw up her hand and cried, “I’m sho’ THOUGHT HIS WIFE WAS SHOT. " he said, ‘and thinking she was shot I started after him with the hatchet, He ran off and I followed, I caught up to him and struck him with the hammer end of the hatchet. He fell down, but he soon got up and walked home. I was almost mad when Iran after him, for my children were crying and I thought my wife was shot. On the other side it is claimed that the shots were not fired at Mrs, Oleffey, but at some of Cletfes’s chickens, Cleffey was in the Police Court this morning, charged with assault and battery with intent to kil, and the case was continued to await the result of Oswald’s injuries, They Said the Special Was at Fault. Temple Moore, @ colored special officer at Mt. Pleasant, appeared as a witness in the Po- lice Court today against Robert brown, whom he charged with disorderly conduct. A num- ber of citizens testified that they saw the arrest, which they claimed was entirely unwarranted, saying that the special was the one to be arrested, if any, for he was loud and demon- strative without cause. The court, in dismiss- ing the case, said it was commendable to see so many citizens coming forward to prevent injus- tice and he hoped that they would see that the proper police authorities were notitied, VATICAN “AN D KING. Humbert Said To Have Been Ex- communicated by the Pontiff. A Rome special to the New York Tribune says: King Humbert and Queen Margherita have been placed under the ban of the church, ‘The sentence of excommunication is stated by the Venice Gazetie, one of the best informed and most widely circulated papers of the king- dom, to have been pronounced by the pontiff in person on the occasion of the secret con- sistory held a few days after the dedication of the Bruno rtatue here. The assertion of the Gazette in universally believed, and there is much to corroborate the authenticity thereof. In the first place, all the ordiuary courtesies which bave been customary recently between the Vatican and the Quirinal have been entirely stopped. Queen Margherita, who, like her brother-in-law, the duke of Aosta, is sincerely and uuaffectedly religious, has‘ for the past twelve or fifteen years been in the habit of spending the hottest wecks of each sum- mer at Venies for the purposs of en- joying the sea baths there. Hitherto the | patriarch arcuvishop, Cardizal Agostino, hus | never failed to cull at the palace shortly after her arrival, in order to welcome the fair sover- eign to the city and to his diocese. This sum- mer for the first time the cardinal failed to pay his customery visit, and took no notice of the queen's arrival. He, aowever, caused it to be privately intimated to ber majesty that his dis- courtesy was due to strict commands received from the Laeagoat: in person. Another circum- stance which tends to confirm the truth of the assertion that the sentence of excommunica- tion has beeu pronounced is the fact that King HED. THE SEAL TROUBLES. Senator Frye Expects a Peaceful Settle- ment—An Extra Session Likely. An Augusta, Me., special to the New York Tribune says that Senator W, P. Frye, just as he was leaving there last evening for the Rangeley lake regions, said in response to a query about the Behring wea trouble: “The first thing for the United States to determine is whether or not the sea is a closed sea. The House, in the bill sent over to the Senate last Session, undertook to assert the principle of a closed sea, Itcume tothe Senate late in the session and was referred to the com- mittee on foreign relations, of which I am a member. That committee reported it back to the Senate with the words stricken out, not because the committee came to the conclusion that it was not a closed sea, but because it was a question of the greatest importance, larger consideration, which there was no time to give. My own Opinion is that that portion of the sea where these controversies arise has always been a closed sea, so maintained for half without any on the part of any nation. As between Great Britain and us the question ought not to be raised, because if these waters are declared open waters in less than five years the whole seal fishery would be destroyed, and England has as much interest in preservin; that fishery as we have, for she purchases ‘and yeoparee for the market all the skins ware the seizures warranted?” * erin were eutirely justifiable, as far as our fficers were concerned, as the law which passed Congrexe instructed the officers to do so. hat is the way out of the difficulty?” “I think the question will be settled between century, skins that are wvenae and north of © street.
