He says that he has been em- ployed by the Creek Nation as their for the collection of the money due them from the Government prior to 1884. His contracts with the Creeks for payment of 10 per cent. for his services of what might be collected were surrendered on February 11, 1889, when Sectetary Vilas informed him that he had theretofore not known of the contracts with Crawford for his compensations, and thst he woud defeat in Congress the ratification of the cession unless Crawford would surrender the contracts and look to the nation for com; nsa- tion. The Secretary assured Crawford thatthe Creeks had authority under their powers of self-government to make compensation. Crawford says that he surrendered his writ- ten contracts under protest, with the ex- pressed however, that he | might collect just compensation the Creeks. Crawford informed the Creek dele- gates and other at in the case of the surrender of the con! and told them they would have to look for themselves to the Creeks for compensation. What is Going on at that Unique Sea- side Resort. Correspondence of Tae EvENiNe Stan. "Bconset, Naxrvcxer Istanp, Mass., Aug. 17. On Sunday we had two very interesting serv- ices in the chapel, The morning service was conducted by Mr. Eugene R. Shippen of Wash- ington, now a student at the Harvard divinity sehool, In the evening the service was Epis- copal, conducted by the Rev. R. E. Jones of » Mich., who can also be claimed as @ Washington boy, I believe. The chapel was built about seven years ago and has since been enlarged to twice its original seating capacity. At every service it is filled with large and atten- tive audiences, and the evening services are es- Pecially well attended by the natives of the village, Every summer there are many culti- vated voiees among tho visitors here who give one or two concerts for the benefit of the chapel, and this, with the weekly contribu- tions, sustains it, ‘The interest in base ball has again revived, and two are played between the ‘Scon- sets and Nantuckets each week. There are many minor “‘nines.” Even the little girls have formed a “nine” to play with tennis ball and racquet, ‘The native population of Nantucket has lately sustained a logs in the death of Capt. Meet RB, Coffin, at one time tide guager here for [eer Many of the visitors remember im in his little store, which was the first in *Bconset and the headquarters for those inter- ested in the “lore” of island. They would go there and read the old Nantucket ballads Peelereeres the brave deeds of former sons and daughters, which were pasted on shingles and hi around the walls, The old captains are fast passing away. One of the distinctive features of 'Sconset as a sea- side resort will be lost when they are all gone. Last night there was a concert, mpl veo to be devoted to building a hall containing, in addition toa large room for dancing, smaller roome for reading and other amusements. The plan is to have in connection with the hall grounds large enough for a base ball field and tennis courts, Mrs. Harrison came to the town of Nantucket last week to see her sister, Mrs. Lord, who has been ill at the Ocean house. On Tuesday she drove to ‘Sconset and San- koty light. In ’Sconset she visited several of the picturesque old cottages and seemed much entertained by the novel character of re place. RAIDING SARATOGA GAMBLERS. Energetic Efforts Being Made to Puta Stop to Games of Chance. It begins to look as though the Saratoga gamblers must go, Preliminary raids were made yesterday on McCormick & Welch's Charlie Mahan’s and Mitchell's. No tables or other facilities for gambling were found by the police and all was as still about the prem- ives a8 an empty church. Complaint was made before Police Justice Pierson charging the men mentioned with keeping places where gambling was carried on. The arrested men waived examination and gaye bail in $300 each to appear before the grand jury. The complaints were prepared by George Addington, an Albany lawyer, upon the appli- cation and testimony of one Eugene Saullsyet, residence unknown. Both the lawyer and the informer sdmitted in court that they were hired by Spencer Trask to come here for the express purpose of closing up every place in Saratoga where [rie is carried on. It is defiantly avowed that ths raids alread; made are but the beginning of the end ani that every place that doesnot close voluntarily will be proceeded against by due process of law. Whatever of regret is felt about the matter is derived from _ the fear that the closing of the club house will re- sult in the discontinuance of the races, as Mr. | Spencer, who owns both the race and the club house, has repeatedly declared that the exist- ence of the one depends upon the other. = ae PILGRIMS TO SULLIVAN’S SHRINE. Flocking in Upon Him All Day—Will Issue a Challenge to Smith. A Boston special to the Philadelphia In- quirer says that it was 3 o’clock yesterday morn- ing before the crowd of admiring sports who crowded the residence of Jobn L. Sullivan's father, on Parnell street, to welcome home the slugger, could be persuaded to leave. The fighter himself, when notified that his sick mother must have rest, had to interfere and put his followers into the street. It was not 9 o’clock a, m. before the crowd was back again, and all day long it was an open house in which the “ardent” was worked for all it was worth. Sullivan was very ab- stemious and drank only little. Soon after noon the more surperfiuous portion of the crowd was gotten rid of and the champion, with a select coterie of leading sporting men, sat down to discuss the future. The first thing considered was the big recep- tion which is to be held at Oak Isiand, as the authorities have forbidden it in Boston. Sulli- yan gave his consent to participate and a small army of pugilistic veterans have volunteered to be | phoonye and aid in the boxing. The affair will come off early next week, and’ in anticipa- tion of ita demand for tickets is being received from all over the eastern states. The authorities of Revere, where Oak Island is situated, are making preparations for the affair and have notified the committee of ar- rangements that the police will assume charge of the stage during the performance. They have sworn in someone hundred additional police to guard against all possible disturbances yy hilarious admirers, The second thing considered was the pro- posed meeting with the Englishman, Smith. Sullivan weighs 285 pounds, and wants this re- duced at least 25 pounds so as to be prepared for an emergency, for he will. while in Boston, formaily challenge Smith. He wants to begin his exhibition tour as soon as ible, and as hie new trial will come off in February and he is not certain where he will be, both the fight = the exhibition will have to come off before at, He will begin his tour the second week in September aud will be accompanied by Mul- doon and the most prominent athletes in the country.
