The fact that it is dangerous for an outsider to interfere in any trouble between man and wife came near being demonstrated in a tragical way last night in southeast Washington. Policemen Kraemer and Proctor were near the Baltimore and Potomac freight yard on New Jersey avenue about 9 o'clock, when a yor man named Dan Callahan came to them and com- plained that an old man living about a square of had threatened to shoot him, He lained that the old man and his wife were engaged in a row and he (Callahan) went to take the part, as he was afraid she might be injured and | perhaps killed. He said that the husband got & pistol and followed him from tba house, threatening to shoot him. Presently the ofa man appeared. He — to be Hezekiah B. | Heusley, a park watchman and special police- man. The officers placed bim under arrest and found on him a loaded revolver. He was in- toxicated at the time, This morning when the case was on trial in the Police Court the defendant told Judge Mills that he was seventy-five years old. ‘The court commented on the fact of the old man’s leaving the bouse with a loaded revolver and took his personal bonds. A Chicago special to the New York Herald says: It is not anticipated that the trial of the men who are charged with the murderous con- spiracy against Dr. Cronin will be a long one. It is thought that when the trial does begin several weeks will be consumed in getting a jury. The people about the state’s attorney's office believe that this work will be as tedious aud difficult as it was in the anarchist case, The murder created so much excitement and such intense interest it is thought it will be no easy matter to find twelve good men who have not formed and expressed decided opinions, The care that will have to be taken insummon- ing talesmen to avoid mien who are secretly in sympathy with the assassins will also make the work still more difficult, it is anticipated. A PROBABLE DELAY. While the trial is set for the 26th inst. the de- fense may demand more time. The state is ready, but itis anticipated that the defense will not be. From present appear- ances the trial will not consume as much time as the prolonged investigations of the coroner's jury and the grand jury. It will take but a few days to nt the evidence for the prose- eution, which will be purely circumstantial un- less one of the defendants weakens and turns state’s evidence. Such a thing as that, however, is now regarded by the prosecution as only barely possible, as Burke and O'Sullivan, the possible squealers, have been greatly encour- aged by their attorneys, Burke is now the central figure in the group of indicted men instead of Coughlin, but as the case develops against him it will be developed against the others. It will be shown, first, that Burke rented the cottage, testimony of cure seats in advance at 619 and 1351 Pennsyl- vania avenue. No extra charge. ATHLETICS AT VASSAR. A New Gymnasium With Eighty-seven Dressing Rooms and a Colossal Tank. A Poughkeepsie special to the New York Sun says: When the Vassar college girls get back to their Poughkeepsie campus they will find not far from good old Maria Mitchell's observatory anew building, which will probably be the scene of more interesting work than the ob- servatory, the laboratory, the music hall, or any of the corridors in the “Catacombs,” that underground series of halls whence so much Vassar romance has sprung. This new build- ing will be the gymasium. It is of rough brick and stands 100 feet long and 82 feet wide, with a height of 40 fect. There will be one big room for general ex- ercise, and there will be lots of emaller apartments for social purposes, to say nothing 2 big tank holding 47,000 gallons of water, and not far away a series of 87 dressing rooms. What fun there will be when that tank is full of girls only the girls will ever know. Every Vassar girl doesn't know how to swim, but there are some of them who could. if neces- sary, take a swim of a mile or two without get- ting tired, and it may be predicted that by next eat this number of experts in the water will te largely increased. Besides the tank there areascore of baths, both needle and shower. is more than there are in any of the public baths here in town. ‘The gymnasium will be ready in the fall. ‘The college has had a sort of gymnasium, but it wasn’t large. What with this new one and the tennis and the walks about the country and the rowing on the college pond and the occa- sional horse exercise, and, above all, the pa- rental care and professional skill with which the women physicians and gymnastic directors look after the girls at Vassar, it is pretty safe to say that the young woman who goes to Vassar or to Wellesley or to Smith, where there are somewhat similar arrangements, will at the end of her four-years’ course be a well-developed unit of anatomy. And she will be a scholar, too, for the girls who like athletics don’t forget 'y favor- | that they go to college primarily for the culture rep ton of their intellectual nature, 7 — hope by this means to impress upon the minds of the jurymen that the course beyonda doubt. Then, it is believed, he can be connected with the rooms at No. 117 Clark street by Martisen’s testimony, which will show that he had the furniture hauled from that place to the cottage. This is the whole case against Burke, with the exception that his hs and fight against ex- tradition will be used. aguinst fim. “What his standing was in Camp No. 20is really not known to the state as yet, but his connection with the famous “Market street gang” and through this medium with Dan Coughlin will be shown to the best of the state attorney's ability. TRE MOST VITAL POINT. As would naturally’be expected, the most vital point in the case is that of connecting the doctor's murder with the blood-stained cot- tage. Nobody saw Dr. Cronin enter there ex- cept Mertes, the milkman, and his evidence is vague, and all the evidence which really con- aects Cronin’s dead bo’ - é with the cottage is the piece of blood-stained cotton batting found in the basement and corresponding with the cotton found im the trank and with that found in the catch basin. It is regarded by the state as a strong circumstance, and is the only thing that sae connects the body with the trunk, and therefore with the cottage. WOODRUF?'S ADMISSIONS. A strong circumstantial case will be made against Burke, O'Sullivan and Coughlin, and Woodruff's admissions are relied upon to at least send him to the penitentiary. He will be posed, however. as a conscience! Kiar, and the defense h. that every word he says and wi Trouble in Manitoba.
