Last arent To Si THE GREAT COKE STRIKE. It is Practically General Throughout the Entire Region. GUARDS FIRE UPON THE STRIKERS BUT NO BLOOD HAS BEEN SHED—PROPOSITIONS FOR AN AD- VANCE BY THE PROPRIETORS REFUSED BY THE MEN—A LONG STRUGGLE EXPECTED. Prrrssura, Pa. Aug. 6.—A Connellsville Special to the Leader sa; A mass meeting of coke strikers was held at Youngstown last night, after which the men marched in a body to Leith, reaching that place early this morning and were joined by the men working there. They then started for Redstone works, and it is expected that the working cokers at Redstone will join their ranks to-day. , This makes the strike practically solid throughout the region. It is reported that at Youngstown an advance of 64 per cent was offered to the men and was rejected by them. A Scottdale, Pa., special says: The strike is now general and the indica- tions are that : THE STRUGGLE WILL BE A LONG ONE. Last evening Supt. Smith, of Alice works— Schoonmaker & Co.—called his men to- gether and submitted propositions to them. When they asked if he would confer with the strikers’ executive committce he replied that he would recognize no labor organi zation. The men rose in a body and marched to Norwood, thence to the Standard works and were joined by the working men. They then, 1,200 strong. marched to Mt. Pleasant. Agnard that had been placed by the company at Moorwood fired several shots to frighten the strikers away. THE STRIKERS RUSHED UPON THE GUARD and the latter fled. The men did no damage ‘0 property and retired, At Jimtown the guard fired several shots at the strikers, but without effect. The strikers marched past the works, quictly returning to Jimtown at a later hour and called a special meeting, induced the workingmen to join their ranks, They then persuaded the men at Sterling works to strike. The en- tire works of Schoomaker & Co, are now idl The report of bloodshed is false, but it cannot be denied that things are assuming a very serious aspect. Last night Supt. Brennan of MeClure & Co. offered his men ‘an advance of 644 per cent., but the offer was rejected. A general mass meeting will be held here to-mor- Tow, and over 8,000 strikers will be present. It is reported this afternoon that Schoomaker & Co. have also offered 61{ per cent advance and that the offer had been calectad: The total number of idle ovens now reaches 11,594, employing 12,000 men. Only a few small plants in the region are working to-day, and they will probably be idle to-morrow. ——— BOULANGER’S PLANS. He Will Stay in London Unless His Ex- tradition is Demanded. New Yor, Aug. 6, 11 am.—The stock market again presented a strong front on a moderately active volume of business this though there was not the istributed business which was a feature of pesterday’s operations. St. Paul, Missouri Pacific, Reading, Atchison and Northern Pacific preferred were especially ac- tive, but many stocks were very dull and un- interesting. First prices, though hampered by the sluggishness of the London market, were generally higher than last night's figures, though the improvement was confined to small fractions. e strength of the market became immediately a hgh however, and almost ee ee in moved up frac- tionally, while Missouri Pacific, which ws especially prominent, rose 124 per cent to 71.
