Edison favorable to the theory that electricity is an uncertain force and hence the world as the greatest living electrician had mone of the hesitancy observable in the physicians who have been on the stand hith- erto or the one-sidedvess of the so-called electrical experts in the employ of companies, with a definite set of statements Se ee ae are tively hired to represent 3 im depp reat workman. His experi- ence covers every corner of the field in which helabora. He makes use of any vsriety of current that suits his purpose, and has nothing to gain by throwing contempt upon oneand heaping praise upon another, or in rescuing either or both from the obloquy which some faint-hearted worthies believe will overwhelm any system put to service as an inflictor of judicial penal- ties, His answers came as promptly and as true to the mark as if shot out of agun into the face of his interrogator, and cannot fail to have their effect upon the minds ef an unprejudiced court if correctly repeated in the report of the Teferee. ‘The public, it may be said in passing, is get- ting just a little tired of the efforts of interested parties to procure a decision against electricity asa primitive agent because of their fears of some sentimental horror which will thencefor- ward attach to it in the public mind. The | power of association does not extend as far as that when the agent is capable of a variety of | beneficent uses. We have not ceased to use hempen rope as a material or the slip-noose as a mode of suspending heavy bodies, because they happen to be employed in the deadly work of the gallows. We still hew trees and split rails and shape joints with the axe in| spite of the bloody history with which London tower reeks, The rifle is to-day as refined an instrument of pleasure in the hands of a marks- man as if it had never been aimed, in cold blood, at the heart of s soldier convicted by court-martial of sleeping at his post. The only effect of the voluntary dedication of a widely useful implement to the infliction of death is to make the peopie who employ it for other poses more careful in its handling. If that in- fluence goes for anything it is for the public agg ae ne ‘The Baltimore American charges that the re- cent farcical act of the canal board in placing repair bonds on the market was not done with the idea that any sane person would buy them, but simpl~ to make political capital in the canal counties by giving the impression that the canal board were disposed to help them. ‘That paper also looks upon the proposal to place the canal in the hands of a receiver as another effort to make capital out of the mori- bund concern. What use, it inquires, can there possibly be for a receiver, except to create another quasi-political office? What can a re- ceiver do that the present officers of the canal cannot do? There are no moneys coming in, ne tolls to be collected, nothing but debts due from the canal to creditors, and surely a re- ceiver would not beso foolish asto imagine that he could raise funds for the repair of the canal. Nothing can now be done to aid those immediately interested in the running of the canal. Before any repairs can be made the winter season will be here ‘ag the canal closed to navigation. Itis suggested, therefore, that the proper course is to discharge at once all the high-sala- ried officers, and when the legislature meets in January, if any corporation can be found to take hoid of the canal and repair and run it as @ private enterprise, and those who hold the repair bonds are willing to waive their rights, which, by the way, is highly improbable, it should be leased or sold, and thus removed forever from the arena of Maryland politics. oo Has it ever occurred to any postmaster of Washington, past or present, that the public convenience could be greatly furthered by a late collection of mail matter at-ceri.in points remote from the post office? As it is now, a Person living in one of the residence quarters | of the city and writing a letter in the evening | after dinner, must carry it to one of the down- town hotels, or to the railway station, or to the Post oilice itself, in order to mail it as late as nine or half-past nine o'clock. Would it not be practicable to have a certain number—say twenty or twenty-five—points scattered over the more thickly-settled parts of the city where mail matter could be posted at least as late as nine o'clock in the evening with the assurance that it would be collected in time to go off on the late night trains? There are drug stores all through the residence quarters, which keep open till late hour and the proprietors of which would doubtless be quite willing to act as custodians of the mail for the sake of the sccideutal custom it might bring them; or, if it were deemed best for any reason not to re- Sort to that means, certain letter boxes, attached to the lamp posts, could be painted white or some other distinguishing color to in- dicate that they belonged to the late service. A few mounted carriers could do all the work in a short time and it is probable that the plan would turn out one of the most popular im- provements ever adopted in this city, SE ‘The jarring discord amongst the New York exposition boomers is getting louder. A writer in the New York World charges that ek-Mayor | Handkerchiefs with the 19c. James G. Blaine, jr., took his first lesson on Monday in the work of a fireman on the loco- motive of an express train. The spectacle of ® young man in overalis, shoveling coal under the boiler of a railroad engine at a dollar a day, while his father stands at the helm of a great nation as its minister of foreign affairs, is a the genuinencas of further will probably depend on the willingness of the republicans to let go the grip they got on state politics after so many years of waiting. —_—_—_—_——— eee enrrroreeee Our stock is the larwest in the city, and consists of the nest gouds manufactured. ‘No Giscount om military or society goods, SS 905 Pennsylvania sve, ae THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON.
