The author of the evening, Mr.J. L. McLeary, presented a realistic picture of the struggles— in "57—of an ambitious young man with no in- heritance but brain and nerve, who went west, The scene was laid on the extreme borders of civilization, in what is now known asthe new northwest. The story was extremely pathetic and was in striking contrast to the igs pic- tures of making homes and fortunes in such sections under the present homestead and pre- emption laws. is was followed by delightful recitations by Miss Bell of Georgetown and Mr. Kail.
