ee BORED A ET Ss , JULY 18, 1889. A TRAGIC ELOPEMENT. An Italian Berry-Picker Killed While Running Away With a Girl. An attempted elopement down among s colony of Italian berry-pickers below Water- ford, in the lower part of Camden county, N. J., precipitated a bloody affray Tnesday night, which resulted in the death of at least one of the combstants. The Italians are nearly all from Philedelphia, and they migrate to the berry districts of South Jersey during the summer, where they occupied unused buildings and berry sheds on the various cranberry bogs and fruit farms, living together in communes, ‘The affray happened at one of these colonies, between Chiselhurst and Waterford. One of the young pickers named Michael Vinopoli had become enamored of Marie, the fourteen-yeat- old daughter of Louis Clabrado, but Vinopoli’s attentions were distasteful to the girl's father. Tuesday the berry-pickers celebrated one of their national holidays in the fields, and con- siderable beer and other liquors were imbibed. omy and his sweetheart made love during the day, and at evening decided to elope. The absence of the couple was soon noted, and Clabrado and his friends started in pursuit. ‘When near Chiselhurst, the fleeing couple were overtaken. As the irate father ——— Vinopoli raised his shotgun and fired the con- tents into the elder man’s thigh. eal a’ ckamer asd augue nn as ‘wount a al rous re o Clabrado feu’ weltering in bicod, his friends must have rushed on Vinopoli and beaten his head with his gun and stones, for he was found not far away, uuconscious, with his skull badly fractured and his body covered with bruises. ‘The two wounded men were brought to Cam- den yesterday morning and placed in the Cooper hospital. Vinopoli died last evening. Several arrests ha en made and other members of the colony will be taken into cus- tody. Clabrado. the rather, may recover. As yet the authori not know who in- flicted the wounds on Vinopoli. The Train Goes Over an Embankment. The Cairo and Vincennes north-bound pas- wenger train yesterday met with almost com- plete demolition 2 miles south of Mt. Carmel, Il, in which twelve to fifteen passengers were seriously injured. The train was running 35 miles an hour, and was composed of a freight car loaded with fruit, a baggage car. and two —— coaches. The freight jumped the rack and threw the remainder of the train into the ditch and down a 1C-foot embankment. The Labors of the Sioux Commission. Major Warner, commander-in-chief of the G.A.R., and one of the Sioux commission, re- turned to Kansas City from the Sioux reserva- tion yesterday. Regarding the labors of the Sioux commission, he said he anticipated suc- cess. When he left the Indians were much more favorable to the Government project than at first. and he had no doubt but that the necessary number of signatures would be ob- tained to the treaty. pati ii cl Chinese Capital in Lower Caltfornia. Advices from Lower California state that the Chinese syndicate who have bought a half in- terest in the Masac concession regard the ore im the real mine as looking well, and miners will soon be put to work there, receiving as wages from $2 to $3 per day. The Chinamen are already talking of importing Chinese la- borers direct from China to Ensenada by the projected Oceanic line to be put on by Claus Spreckels, the sugar refiner. The syndicate have also bargained for extensive tracts of land to be used for market gardens and for valuable fi: ~ privileges along the coast of the peninsula.” All this will necessitate an fn- Yestment of no less than $1,000,000 of Chinese capital. This will include the amount paid for the real Del Castillo mining property, the gar- den lands near Ensenadi, the colony property, the seal and shell fisheries, and the more valu- able pearl fisheries at the southern end of the peninsula, pcesacteeneinlab pegpetiiisi A Steel Cruiser of the Air. The Aerial exhibition association has been organized in Boston, Mass., with C. M. Ran- som, of modern light and heat, treasurer, R. N. Bowlby, chairman. and Charles B. Basford. chairman of the board of trustees. The object of the association is to assist Dr: A. De Baus- set to construct a steel air-ship upon the vacuum principle. The ship is to be con structed entirely of thin steel plates of the strongest possible tensile strength and thor- oughly braced inside by a new development in mechanics to resist the stress of the pressure of the atmoxphere when a partial vacuum is obtained. It 1s expected to lift 200 passengers and 50 tons of mail or other matter, and also to carry all the machinery and apparatus, with electrical Spits sufficient to give a speed to the ship of at least 70 miles an hour. Dr. De Bausset has applied for permission to build the ship at the Charlestown navy-yard. A national subscription is being made io secure | the necessary fund. The cost is expected to be $250,000." Dr. DeBausset claims that his plans are approved by the most eminent scien- tists and engineering experts in this country. ~ eee Republican Union in Virginia. A Richmcnd special to the Philadelphia Press last evening says: The Mahone people are pleased to-night. They have heard that there is a probability of closing the breach between the two wings of the party. The main point is that a number of office-seekers think that something will be done quickly on their ac- count. From the Congregationalist, Some years ago Dr. Quint, ina memorial address to a postin Somerville, told how a friend of his, seeing his little Grand Army badge at the Congregational house, said: “That is rather pretty; what did you pay for | it?” and that he answered: “Ten cents and three years of war life. Do you want to buy one?” ba Boer took with the “boys,” and he has repeated it in two or three addresses. and last year at New Bedford it went into print. We understand that the chaplain was delighted to learn that the point was so well appreciated that a memorial orator, this May, in a large Worcester county town, delighted his au- dience by telling how a friend of his, seeing his Grand Army badge. said to him: hat is quite pretty. What did you pay for it?” and received the same answer—‘‘Ten cents and so many years of war, &c. Do you want to buy one?” or words to that effeet. The chaplain says that the idea is not patented, and any me- morial orator next year is at perfect liberty to tell how a friend, seeing his Grand Army badge. said: ‘That is rather pretty; what did you pay for it?” and receive the same answer: “Ten cents,” &c., with expazsions to any re- wired extent. A Chicago special to the Philadelphia Press says: The King-Pillow scandal was revived to- day by the institution of a suit for 210,000 damages against H. Clay King by Mrs. Mary Pillow for defamation of character. The plain- tiff is the widow of Gen. (iideon Pillow of Mex- iean war fame, and the defendant is a lawyer and planter. Several years ago he became acquainted with Mrs. Pillow, and not long afterward she accom- panied him to his plantation in Arkansas, where they lived in the same house until a few mon: ago, when King returned to his family in fl city, During his association with Mrs. Pillow he deeded to her the Arkansas plantation and ger = hy his property in this state. On return home King instituted proceed- ings to recover his property.
